I always assumed a lot of those disappeared people didn't get tired of perfumes, but just got tired of talking about perfumes.

Is there an end to [this] fragrance journey?

I don't like how this is phrased because it sets up semantic problems.

If you asked, "Is there an end to this hobby?"...it's easy to answer that interest in this art does end for some.

It's very interesting to see how using journey instead affects the responses.

Did you know there's a TV show called x files with a character named Krycek too?

While most people on Basenotes will never find an end, I believe that it is possible to curate a collection that one is fully content with.

Well, perhaps. But there are other reasons to leave this site: one might continue to wear fragrances but tire of the ways it's discussed.

I'm still plenty interested in fragrance, but I'll say that so much of the conversation here (ala recommendation threads or just "I like it" or "I don't like it" conversation with little explanation) may be diverting, but it isn't very satisfying.

And maybe that's just the nature of the artform. With literature or cinema or music, talking about it can become its own creative, satisfying endeavor apart from the experience of it. This can be true of fragrance, but it takes considerably more effort to get there.

I agree that discussing perfume can be a challenge, but it's so fun to try.

Tired of talking about perfume? That sounds so sad to me. If they're "not tired" of perfume, it sounds like they're not completely dead inside, which is good to know.

I agree! And some here are committed to that endeavor and do it well.

But, and I say this without disdain or judgment, I think a lot of the conversation on this forum doesn't involve actual discussion. For many folks here, it's really just a way of cataloging their fragrance journey rather than interrogating it. And that's fine.

There are some obvious reasons as to why many of the more discussion-minded folks here are primarily active in the vintage segment of forum.

The fragrant journey has many pathways. Depending on which path one takes... Yes.

For me the hobby horizon is long and flat; much discrimination, a little anguish, the freedom of letting things go... all in the determination of WMM™ (What Matters Most).

Why would I want it to end. The joy for me is sample, sample, sample and hopefully discover something worth purchasing more.
