Default Do you know the brand Hiram Green (Hyde, Voyage 2019 & more)?

A house I recently discovered. Actually won the Art & Olfactory awards last year and my experiences with them so far have been amazing. Below are reviews for Hyde & Voyage 2019. I have a sample of the discontinued Shangri La (basically a peach chypre) and Slowdive, which I will add to this thread once I get around to review them).

    • HIRAM GREEN HYDE •

Hyde is the winner of the 2019 Art & Olfactory awards for artisan perfumery, so obviously that piqued my interest. The first thing that hits you when you apply Hyde is a strong incense forward scent. It's bold and slightly challenging, which you can pretty much guess by looking at the color of the juice. Hyde contains labdanum, oakoss and most importantly birch tar, giving this a smoky, fire or burnt wood scent. There's a hint of a sharp citrus in the opening, but it's dominated by the darker notes. It leans towards a chypre with an animalic touch, which doesn't sound like a fragrance that I would love, but Hyde pulls it off. The smoky incense is strong enough to be the main note amidst all the heavy hitters and it's somehow comforting and I would go as far as describing it as beautiful and soothing. The magic is in a vanilla or vanilla malt accord, that's amazing and, although slightly different, reminiscent of the gorgeous vanilla note in Voyage 2019. It brings a syrupy texture and some much needed sweetness to an otherwise powdery fragrance.

The performance is through the roof. It feels like a heavy thick cloud surrounding you, with excellent longevity, projection and sillage. I think it's a bit much, and it limits wearability to colder weather and preferably outdoor wears •

    • HIRAM GREEN VOYAGE 2019 •

Voyage 2019 is an updated version of a 2015 release (which I have not tried). It's my second Hiram Green fragrance, after trying Hyde, which won Art & Olfaction Award last year. I will be doing a video on Hyde, in which I will also address Voyage 2019, but you can read my thoughts on the latter below.

Voyage is an amazing sweet amber fragrance. It opens very strong and more spicey than I expected. Although it's not listed, to me it has an incense scent (similar to the DNA that's in Hyde). There's a hint of citrus, but it's understated. After the initial punchy opening, it becomes sweeter and warmer, with a hint of florals. Voyage is centered around lotus. I don't know exactly how a lotus flower smells, but I feel it adds a tropical, exotic, almost body lotion element to this composition. To my nose, the florals here reminds me of tuberose fragrances that I tried recently. The essence in Voyage is the warm vanilla though; it's lifelike, gourmandy and reminds me of a vanilla pudding or other sort of dessert, maybe with a touch of honey to complete it.
Stunning fragrance. Seemingly simple, but executed well and I have a feeling the listed notes don't do the full composition justice. This is much more wearable than Hyde in my opinion, but Hiram Green is 2 for 2 as far as my experiences go and I look forward to trying out more from the house •

Glad you enjoyed them. Hiram Green has its share of fans here on BN though I’ve yet to be converted. As pleasant as some of these fragrances are I’m just not moved well enough to wear them. I was even surprised to know Hyde won an A&O award.

hmm I only tried 3 so far & I think all are special. Hyde is crazy, but not something I could wear often, Voyage 2019 is one of the best ambers I've smelled and would be purchase I'd consider for sure. Shangri La isn't really my thing, but still very good. Going to try Slowdive soon

I was meaning to purchase a sample set of Hiram Green's offerings, but have been sidetracked by other shiny things (Menditorossa in particular). I think I may rectify this soon.

I love Hiram's work, especially his florals. Moon Bloom and Dilettante are amongst my favourite and most worn scents. Hyde is spectacular, but not an easy wear, for me at least, my husband loves it though. Slowdive is another intriguing one, I may end up getting a 10 ml travel spray of that at some point. It's incredibly potent, so that volume would last me a lifetime.

Big fan of this house. I owned Hyde, Arbole Arbole, and Slowdive. I sold them and regret it. Thinking about reacquiring them eventually. Everything I have tried from the house is quality, but these three in particular really impress me. I miss Arbole Arbole the most.

Hmm, I haven't heard of Arbole Arbole. Might need to get my hands on a sample of that one next.

Moon Bloom is definitely on the list for the next time I order samples

Love this house. Own Hyde, Arbole Arbole, dilettante and slowdive. LOVE Shangrila but didn’t get a bottle before it was discontinued. Got lustre for my mom.

    Haven’t tried voyage yet.

Yeah, I randomly got Shangri La sampled from a different website, didn't know it was discontinued until I tried it, but I guess it's just the IFRA restrictions on oakmoss that ruined it

An impressive house that defies what many think are the limitations on natural ingredients. I own a bottle of Hyde, Slowdive, and Shangri La. Would like to have more of his products but one must live within the bounds. Hyde really pushes the boundaries for birch tars. Meleg Perfumes Birch Tar & Russian Leather No 25 gives it a challenger as does Areej Le Dore Siberian Summer but to a lesser degree. A must try for birch tar fans. Blind bought Shangri La as it was disappearing from the market. A gorgeous scent that was apparently a victim of IFRA. Maybe score another bottle or two to celebrate an upcoming special occasion. Looking forward to further from the OP.

thanks man & indeed, I don't want to hear anyone complaining about performance of all natural fragrances after trying these. Hyde is among the absolute wildest performers I've come across so far.

I'm a big fan of his work and own Shangri La (love it; sad it's discontinued), Moon Bloom (love it), Dilettante (love it; sad he's discontinuing it), and Slowdive (I'm not a honey fan but my wife loves wearing it). I'll probably end up buying Lustre at some point because I really enjoyed wearing that as well. No idea how he gets such longevity from all-natural materials.

I thought Hyde was fantastic but it's in the same category as Douleur! -- it would get worn so infrequently that my great-grandchildren would be dead before that bottle was half-finished. I have yet to try Voyage.

I ordered a sample set last year and ultimately wound up with full bottles of Slowdive and Voyage 2019. Still planning on eventually owning Hyde as well. I'm a fan!

Can't wait to try my Slowdive sample! Voyage is definitely on my wishlist.

I wonder if anyone here has/has tried Voyage 2015

I feel the same way. It's the more interesting one imo, but as far as wearability I'm putting it in Tuscan Leather territory. Voyage is the one on my wishlist

Arbole, Arbole is my favorite, too. What a gorgeous and unusual take on patchouli.

Yeah, he recently posted that he was discontinuing it to make room in his collection for new fragrances. I'm quite sad about that because I think it's a wonderful orange blossom fragrance. But, since je woont in Nederland, it will be easier for you to take advantage of his discount offer through his website: 20% off with the code DILETTANTE.

I just did, but I love this scent so much that one bottle is probably not going to cut it. How many bottles does it take to last me a lifetime?

Although I haven't had the chance to sample the '15 version I read enough reviews from people who had tried both to feel that the general consensus is the '19 version was even better.

Interesting view. A focus on Patchouli. I think I'll be tasting Arbole as SOTE with a focus on that.

My view has been that this wonderful scent offers a brilliant study of Tonka. I find Hiram Green's remarkable magic in application of Vanilla in both this and the original Voyage.
Both of these are my faves.
Moon Bloom is one of the few Tuberose-centric scents that don't have me gasping.

I have only sampled Hyde, but really enjoyed the tension/interplay between the rough, raw birch tar and something softer underneath. A fine example of this genre. With infinite money, I would have bought a FB and worn it often, but even a split would have been sufficient.
from May Eve to Midsummer : with leathers, greens, fougeres, and a few florals. I remember getting a few samples from him and wearing them on my skin for a while, but shockingly enough ended up having some kind of rash/skin reaction to pretty much every single one of them! (which is crazy - statistically speaking)
I like the fragrances but have a sneaking suspicion that because of the super high natural concentration, he doesn't adhere to IFRA. I have no other way to explain the skin rashes, never happened to me before in my life.
Wouldn't mind wearing them on clothes maybe, but on my skin it got pretty freaky.
