I've been watching them a bit more.....not really looking for fragrance ideas but just curiousity as to the quality of the videos. Content, editing, sound, etc......In this regard, I'm usually disappointed. I can appreciate the 'just a guy making a video in his den or basement' style but the ones who are pretty well off could stand to put a little more effort into what they're doing. But then again, why depart from how you started way back in the beginning? It's interesting to watch some of these to see the differences and to see who is prepared and who is not.

The written word can be a great medium for reviews and so can the spoken word. Seems odd so many are people are one way or the other. I love to read books and watch films and never think one is a superior medium.

If Luca Turin made a video review and posted it on youtube would his review suddenly be less relevant?

I dunno, I trust the ones who are transparently just doing this for fun with ramshackle production values more than the folks with polished presentation.

    Good point.
But in my case I don’t trust cause things on YT became a business. Opinions of a great part of reviewers became consciously or unconsciously biased by the business. And this is not trustworth for me; it can be for a lot of people, not for me.
BTW doesn’t Mr Turin receive anything by any brand for reviewing? Like: “we’ll send you a bottle of this in order you can at least try and maybe review it.”?

The problem isn’t the media; it’s the content and delivery, both applicable to any medium. There are probably more crappy books as there are crappy films. Nor is every written review worth the paper it’s written on. At least one could speed-read or skim through the written form. But I’ve yet to acquire the ability to decipher ‘Alvin & the Chipmunks’ speech in a fast-forwarded video review clip.

Re: LT. He’s a wordsmith. I’d easily spend >20 minutes listening to him talk about fragrances. But if his video looks like it’s been shot in poor light by a 4th Grader with a handheld cam, I wouldn’t watch it either.

People take fragrance reviewers way to seriously as if they are certified, licensed, registered experts. Fragrance reviewers simply serve as entertainment, and can oftentimes provide decent leads and ideas about fragrances that you never heard about.

You just need to remember that fragrances are subjective and oftentimes a very personal experience -- and best judged personally by wearing them. Not buying a fragrance, simply because is YouTube fragrance reviewer, say it sucks or vise versa is asinine!

That wouldnt be the gist of finding YouTube more irrelevant to my research as time goes on. Im fine with disagreeing with someone subjectively if their view is their own and comes from a place of passion. When their bias has been commercially motivated, not so much. The Parfums de Marly marketing strategy is one that has clearly compromised a LOT of channels.

The other thing that kills me in a lot of reviews is the sheer amount of waffle. A reviewer might get bogged down for minutes with shit like, Um, I think its pronounced this way... no that way... um this way... Im getting nervous and laughing at myself... haha Im repeating myself... oh French is hard lolz.... plz hit like!

Like others on this thread have said, people need to edit their shit and have a freakin plan going in.

I still watch YT on occasion but the amount of time I spend and sources I enjoy is rapidly diminishing. When Im consistently getting better info, more genuine opinions and more entertaining prose through the written word, I just dont find myself motivated to go back to it.

I truly never quite understood the fascination with them. Who's got time to watch 20-30 minutes of somebody's thoughts on one bottle of Frederic Malle?!
It also kinda grosses me out that many of them know pretty much nothing about fragrance chemistry and formulation but yet are trying to position themselves as experts.
I once had the opportunity to visit Pitti Fragranze tradeshow in Florence and my lord, there were soooo many of them! And absolutely all of them were going from stand to stand nagging brands for free bottles?! And I don't mean the big brands, I mean, the small guys who are hoping to get some exposure. I've got some pals in the industry, and knowing how high the costs are and how low the profits are for most of them, it just grosses me out that youtube reviewers feel entitled enough to actually beg for free stuff.

But overall, most of them strike me as self-absorbed twats.

Not less relevant than what these already are for me.

Youtube has gotten more commercial over the years. Back in the day it was mostly regular people talking about..."stuff", and it was more about discussion, rather than production value and trying to make a buck (people didn't even make ad revenue at some point, or the views were so low that it at most amounted to being able to buy a new camera).

I watch quite a lot of youtube now and then but not for fragrance, mostly old channels that started way back (like 2010 or before that) when it was easier to find "genuine people with opinions" on that platform. One or two current events/news channels that started way back and gotten popular now, and I happen to know these people from talking to them. Some weight lifting channel. Same thing. But it's mostly entertainment, with some rare exceptions where a topic might not be discussed anywhere else in an easily accessible format.

I do occasionally watch U smells good, and Kristofer Maves, mostly out of habit and at least one of them is pretty into Frederic Malle which I am as well.

There's just so many good blog posts or forums posts where you can easily skim thru stuff you don't need to hear.

Absolute truth. The fact to broadcast on a youtube channel or to write a book doesn't make a review more valuable to me than any review here on BN.

It's all about identifying the reviewers who understands about fragrances and have a functionnal nose. As far as I'm concerned, I've identified several ones on BN (and the other site), a handful who own youtube channel and blogs, but none who has written a book.

Unfortunately I have watched them and not to sound harsh but most of them are obsessed with themselves... The camera has done more harm to masculinity than I could've ever imagined.
When the DJ began scratching vinyl, Disc Jockeys hated it... When Virgil started embellishing jerseys, The "Sharpie" began to lose ink... What I plan to do with niche fragrances will turn some of you way OFF... Exactly the way I intend to!

It’s and easier for me to browse written reviews, other than seeking out live music clips I find YouTube highly uninteresting.
