Default Your Thoughts On Youtube Fragrance Reviewers?

What do you guys/gals think of growing number of Youtube reviewers? For me personally, I think it's great, especially the sincere ones that have a true passion for perfumes, I do watch them sometimes to get info on a fragrance that may be on my buy list. But lately, a lot of these reviewers seem to be turning more into a shill and pushing sales. I guess the mighty $$ is hard to ignore. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for capitalism and entrepreneurship (I'm one myself) and there's nothing wrong with that. But lately I noticed many of these reviewers are questionable and I wonder if they really find the fragrance as "awesome" as they claim? I got to laugh at the ones that like to sniff the bottle and roll back their eyes like they're making love to it or something lol. It just seems a little dramatic to me.

Does anyone know if these reviewers get their fragrances for free to review? I would assume many of then do. If so, wouldn't that make their reviews a little conflicted? Even if they're honest, who is going to knock a perfume as "horrible" if it was gifted to them. If they did, I doubt they get many more freebies from that house or business.

I don't think much of them and I don't watch, save for a handful over the years that I sampled and couldn't tolerate. The latest trend of Youtube "reviewers" hawking their own sponsored perfume I find even less appealing, though I respect their right to do so.
    Current Top Ten:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Jasmin Antique (Rogue Perfumery)
    3) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    3) Giorgio V.I.P. Special Reserve (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie

    5) Dia pour Homme vintage edt (Amouage)

    6)
Anat Fritz and its reissue, called Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    8) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    8) Polo vintage (Ralph Lauren) - tie

    many do.

I like Scent Land, and he doesn't get anything for free. He reviews older fragrances, all designers.

I like Wafts, and they do get some things for free, and others they pay for.

Maybe one or two others now and then, who I am pretty sure pay for all their fragrances. Aetherealist for instance.
FYI: I spray all fragrances on clothing, never on skin.

I don't think making a review in a video medium elevates the content's value in any way, I tried to sit through some back in the day before influencers started capitalizing on YouTube fragrance newbies, Katie P was the only one I enjoyed watching, again, mostly for her charisma and short duration of her videos, her content was not the hook for me. BetaweeBlood was another relatively good one I sat through but he was also nowhere as good as some bloggers nor as informed as most fraghead friends. Nowadays they are mostly YouTubers with the repetitive lists and stupid notions like getting laid or dropping panty! I mean fuck all that and piss on them, I won't even touch those thumbnails.

Bloggers are somehow whole other story though (maybe YouTube money is the culprit? Maybe the fact that YouTubers feel the need to make more videos without having new interesting/valuable content to show for it, maybe the feeling of being an online phenomenon/celebrity has sth to do with it........) Among bloggers Non-Blonde & Kafkaesque are my favorites, we share a lot in taste, and when we don't I still can read through pages of Kafkaesque bashing Rien, Aoud Cuir d'Arabie or Montecristo and still whole heartedly enjoy her descriptions.

I think YouTubers are the reason most new male fragheads have the almost identical collection of 10 perfumes.

Enjoying and have enjoyed quite a few both in the past and currently, mainly but not limited to BN contributors Forfreddie and Le Grand Duc (the latter posting under the YT name of Landgraven), while among the ones not yet BN contributors at the time: mainly Gavo and truly not least Aperfume - have had lots of interesting fragrance info and knowledge to learn from them and still do

Most are just shills and create top ten lists for compliments nonsense.

These are the ones I watch:

Persolaise - serious with in-depth knowledge

Wafts - passionate but slowly turning into shills

Ouch110 - laid back but sincere

Scentrifugal force - for the lols

U smells good - for the rants

The people that have channels on youtube dedicated to making money are constanly forced into making decisions which pit their ethics against their viability as a business and I don’t see that the fragrance reviewer element are immune from this.

The nature of this online video beast means that fragrance reviewers that give their honest review and produce content they genuinely want to probably won’t rank high enough to get any visibility. The popularity of many of the big name reviewers has only come about because of their Top 10 style format which seems, well...popular. But there comes a point where to keep their throne many are probably going to take freebies from certain companies to keep a constant flow of new stuff to review in exchange for an unwritten understanding that they give a favourable review.

If people have a desire for a video format which is unbiased I think there will need to be an alterntive platform to Youtube to do it. Youtube have been leveraging their algorithm muscle to lead what people think through censorship and playing off who is left to appeal to the lowest common denominator which is why Youtube are losing so much market share to other service providers. They have taken a platform once loved as a homevideo hobbyist and information platform and overcommercialised it into a constant consumption of adverts disguised as content.

There are the guys like Jeremyfragrance or Demy Rowlings which love a Top 10 video and seem to be immersed in the machinery.

Then there are the guys like Chris from Scentland or Lanier who are clearly making videos because they love the fragrances and have a passion which goes beyond YT and just want to share their views and great scents with others.

Someone like Dan from the MrSmelly channel appears to have been able to ride both ponies at once, playing the Top 10 Formal Niche For Summer 2020 game enough to keep channel visibility and recommending outlets to buy, creating a profitable brand, whilst staying true to his tastes telling people about his favourite classics with a bit of cheesy humour to boot.

So yes there are some shills unfortunately but there is some good content if you know where to dig.

Same here. I've watched Jeremy, Wafts From the Loft, Mr Smelly, Demi Rawling, and a few others from a while back whose names I cannot remember. None of them appeal. I'm not sure if it's me, but my personal view is that fragrances are best reviewed in print. Video reviews / discussions of fragrances are boring as.

I like all of those you mentioned. I'm also a big fan of Stumptown Smells and The Scentinel, both of whom seem to do this as a hobby, not a career.

I just like my reviewers to be straight-shooters. They don't have to share my obsessions, but I want them to call it like they see it.

The Wafts boys, Dan and Jo, mentioned in the comments section for one of their videos that they're not making any money from their new fragrance. It's just a labour of love. Make of that what you will.

I stopped watching YT reviews a long time ago when I noticed the business rolling under the table. I don’t feel ok with that. Good for those who feel and even more for those who make some profit with it. They just won’t get my support in any means.

Actually now I (barely) watch just old stuff. New only if I want to joke on something like Jeremy. I don’t have patience for 20 minutes (one of the reasons I loved Katie Puckrik- straight to the point reviews) of mental onanism over a fragrance. In 20 minutes I read the entire list of reviews for a fragrance here.

My favorite and one I mainly watch is Joy Amin, his passion is second to none and his personality is a welcomed presence. He is very informative and seems to do it as a hobby and enjoys sharing his thoughts with fragrance enthusiasts. He is well versed and sometimes makes mistakes with claims but I personally enjoy watching his reviews every once in awhile. I’m glad he is still doing this and didn’t let the past stop his awesome personality from being on camera.

There so much shilling to navigate through but the most genuine and sincere reviewer I've come across in roughly 2+ years of watching is Smells Good. I actually don't like a fair amount of his choices, I just enjoy his intelligent enthusiasm for fragrances.

As long as they aren't trying to push stuff on you every two or three minutes. If they stop what they're talking about to just to go into some sidebar about how they love some moisturizer and shaver, I lose all respect for them completely.

I’d look up YT reviews if and only if I can’t find written reviews of a specific fragrance. While the production quality may have technically improved recently (thanks to technology) many of these YT videos are still poorly edited and offer little ‘meat’ to chew on. I can read a well articulated written review in a fraction of the time it takes to slog through a meandering video. And all the advertising is a real turn off.

Thesedays I prefer written reviews, Pour Monsieur's blog, scentbound.co, etc

Only one I really watch now is Scentland,

Most are shills, many will hype a fragrance and then a couple of weeks later not include it in a best 10 list, its also a little uncomfortable for me to watch how out of control some of thier habits are. But maybe thats just me.
I do really love the reviewers with a sense of humor I mean how can you not love this review ( NSFW language)

A serious +1. Call it not being young, or maybe anti-social, but watching people filming themselves rating or reviewing pretty much anything seems like a total waste of time.... For those that find it entertaining carry on, we'll miss the youtube reviewer references in other posts....

I must admit, I'm guilty and tend to watch more Youtube than I care to admit given I'm in the more mature group of viewers. Oddly enough, hiking videos and restoration recently.. I find them strangely cathartic.

There are a select few channels I tend to watch regulary and only those who are passionate and don't peddle any sales. Like others above have mentioned; Stumptown Smells, The Scentinel, Aetherealist, Wafts, Mr Oz and sometimes Persolaise. One guy in my opinion who doesn't get enough love is Therapeutic Fragrance. I've learned quite a bit from him and his videos are well put together, passionate and informative. Great collection too.

ugh. they are a bad way to find info, but good way to listen to people talk about things you care about. Without sports and with all the news bad I've been watching. Many are terrible. I assume many are just shills. So are SAs, but I'd talk to them. Some of these people are out of control with their habits, or they are getting a mass amount for free, or they are making good money on youtube. We don't have similar tastes, though admittedly I share taste with no one as far as I can tell. I like Eugenius. Its always wierd when you see something like his and Wafts reactions to a Bortnikoff and ALD. How have those guys not smelled those before. I suppose they don't get a whole lot of clicks. They do have early reviews on fragrances. Thats nice.
