Default John Varvatos Files for Bankruptcy

    Article from Bloomberg here.

It appears that Varvatos will remain chairman and chief creative officer of the reorganized company.

I think Rodrigo Flores-Roux has done good work with Varvatos. Hoping they continue to make fragrances.

I feel sad for anyone having to take this route, but personally was never a fan of the house - clothing or their fragrances. For those who are, I hope they continue in some form.

Love his clothes and store decor. Big loss in the design realm in my opinion.

If the bankruptcy lasts as long as his fragrances, it should be quick.

    Sad news.

I quite like John Varvatos scents with Classic as the longest lasting of his fragrances that I've tried, while the others I've tried are substandard in the longevity department

A few weeks ago, I splashed some Classic on one hand and Artisan Blu on the other, from a set of four small splash bottles I own, to decide which I'd buy in big bottles as there was a sale on in a local store.

I liked the Classic much more, my wife liked the Artisan Blu more.

Our ragdoll cat threw herself on her stomach and wanted a rub - which I did with my Artisan Blu hand. The cat promptly whacked my hand away with here paw, expressing strong annoyance.

Later I patted the cat's head with my Classic hand - big difference - the cat kept trying to sniff my hand, thoroughly intoxicated with it.

So I went and bought a bottle of the Classic, as my wife was out-voted.
    Regards,
    Renato

It's a shame. Not surprising, of course. Some of the gear was pretty expensive, though.

Honestly, this wasn't that surprising. There fragrances are OK. No stand outs in the line. I personally didn't really like his style of clothing, but I'm sure others do.

Big fan of the fragrances. I think they are extremely underrated here on BN. Yet to try one that I don't like. And can usually be found for a reasonable price.

I like the store's atmosphere and the clothing. Fragrances never really stood out to me. I have only ever bought one shirt from the brand. Unfortunate.

Sad. I have Artisan, maybe I should buy another one as a show of support. Any suggestions for 34C degree weather?

I have the two I wanted, Dark Rebel and Vintage. The only one I may grab is Oud. The drugstore near me has one so it's tempting..

Also hoping they won't discontinue their fragrances and thus their scent will somehow carry on in a certain form

Of course that's sad news at least for the company.

However I never got the hype with the JV fragrances. Many reviewers even called them "niche level" for cheap designer prices.

I've sampled a lot of them and to my nose they were really "synthetic" smelling in a bad way.

Designer fragrance brands often outlive the designers if they die or their house shutters. Giorgio, Geoffrey Beane, Halston, Lapidus, Ed Hardy (via the late Christian Audigier), and even Creed are all examples of a perfume brand living on beyond the demise of the original house that launched them (Creed was a royal courtier and later leather maker/haberdasher until 1961 with perfumes allegedly being privately by appointment until Olivier Creed appeared in 1970).

Yeah, Halston and Balenciaga both recently got re-started as fashion houses, but point is their perfumes remained on the market. I see no reason that whoever owns the John Varvatos perfume line to let it die if people are still buying them just because the parent company of the clothing outfit went busto.
