Default After Bleu de Chanel (EDT) and Dior Homme Sport (2017), what next?

I started sampling fragrances about a year ago, and I’ve been struggling to identify what the fragrances I like have in common. This has made it difficult to narrow down fragrances to sample next.

Two of my favorite fragrances—Bleu de Chanel (EDT) and Dior Homme Sport (2017)—share several notes: grapefruit, pink pepper, nutmeg, sandalwood and vetiver. I’ve tried using tools like Fragrantica’s “search-by-notes”, but the results omit fragrances with similar-but-not-identical notes—for example, if I like grapefruit and nutmeg, I expect to also like fragrances containing orange and ginger.

I’ve also tried looking at accords. According to Fragrantica, Bleu de Chanel (EDT), Dior Homme Sport (2017), and Versace Pour Homme all have a “citrus” accord, but to my nose, Versace Pour Homme doesn’t smell similar to BDC or DHS. After a couple hours of wear, Versace Pour Homme projects strong floral notes that give me a slight headache. Similarly, both Bleu De Chanel (Parfum) and Terre d’Hermès have “woody” accords and yet smell nothing alike to me. I love the softness of Bleu de Chanel Parfum and dislike the heavy cedar of Terre d’Hermès. A friend compared the scent of TDH to a hamster cage, which I think is harsh but understandable.

I’m not sure where to go from here. I’ve seen posts on Reddit recommending the Perfumer’s Apprentice kits to people interested in learning more about the components of fragrance. Is that a good way to learn to identify and describe what I like and dislike?

Does anyone have recommendations for fragrances I might enjoy? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to you smockle! Enjoy your time here at Basenotes! I would just keep sampling until a new fragrance clicks with you rather than targeting individual notes. You're bound to find another that speaks to you in time most likely with a completely different array of notes.

    Welcome!

Apart from Bleu de Chanel, would also add among (re) testing options especially but not only:

Bleu de Chanel EDP and Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme by the house of Chanel, while also Boucheron pour Homme EDP, Best of Chevingon, Mugler Cologne, Hugh Parsons Blue, Cerruti 1881 Edition Blanche, Lalique White and Lalique Encre Noir Sport, along the lines of the citruses and/or the fragrances in general that you might enjoy.

    Welcome smockle!

Your best bet is to continue to sample even if at random.

The following are not among 'blue' scents but given their notes you might want to try them if you haven't already. I have and enjoy all of them personally and these are the notes I perceive from them:

Carven L'Eau Intense: Lemon/grapefruit, mint, cardamom, ginger (the freshest among these)
John Varvatos Artisan Pure: Various citrus, ginger, mild woods and musk/amber finish (excellent value and decent performance)
La Martina Maserati Centennial Polo Tour: Orange, bergamot, nutmeg, herbal/green notes, violet and a mild musky finish (very fresh and great performance)
Bentley for Men Azure: Tangerine, bergamot, violet, tonka and cashmere wood (unique and very good performance)
Phaedon Poivre Colonial: Grapefruit, vetiver, pepper, nutmeg (this is a soft scent)
Shiseido Zen for Men: Nashi pear, violet, nutmeg, patchouli, musk, leather (strong and fruity start but comforting to me)
Azzaro Visit for Men: Incense, cedar, pink pepper, nutmeg, cardamom on a musky/ISO E Super base (this to me is the warmest, sometimes hard to smell but fuzzy and soft)

I would also recommend you try Aventus (or Insurrection II Pure), Montblanc Legend and Legend Spirit.

I hope you find something you really enjoy!

Sample like crazy! I have sampled about 30 last month and was surprised that the ones I though I would love just didn't click with me and the 3 that did, TdH Parfum (wasn't impressed with the Edt previously), Replica Jazz Club and Gucci Guilty Absolute really stood out to me and deserve to join my collection.

I would also +1 for Cedrat Boise, TF Grey Vetiver and Aventus to your sample list.I

    Good luck
