Default The Lady Eve: A Perfume can Convert a Man

Guys, I have just watched a fantastic movie, called The Lady Eve, and I think it is a must-see for fragrance lovers. It is basically a love story and a comedy, but It is a very very sophisticated film nonetheless. The dialogues are priceless. The main characters are played by Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. The film is based on a story by Monckton Hoffe about a mismatched couple who meet on board an ocean liner. Fonda plays a boy who is totally inexperienced with women, that is quite clear, and he is a scientist like me. But not only that: he spends months in the jungle, with only men around him, and spends all this time looking for “Snakes”. One of the characters in the movie calls him “peculiar”. The movie was released in 1941, so you guys can probably guess what was being suggested and insinuated here. But the best scene for BN’ers is the bedroom seduction scene, when Fonda gets very close to Stanwyck and is totally entranced by her perfume. Here’s the dialogue:

FONDA: { Sniffing } Holy Moses!
    STANWYCK: What's the matter?
    FONDA: That perfume.
STANWICK: What's the matter with it?
FONDA: It's just that I've been up the Amazon for a year, and they don't use perfume.
    …...
FONDA: You see, where I've been... I mean, up the Amazon, you kind of forget how... I mean, when you haven't seen a girl in a long time... I mean, uh, there's something about that perfume that...
STANWICK: Don't you like my perfume?
FONDA: Like it? I'm cockeyed on it.
    ….
STANWYCK: Oh. You're not going to faint, are you?
FONDA: Who, me? Uh, it's that perfume.
    STANWYCK: Oh.

Enjoyable post. I think it would take more than perfume to convert a man in real life. Barbara Stanwych looks extremely beautiful in the picture.

I know that movie quite well.
My favorite character actor from that era Charles Coburn as her card shark father.
Fonda as the naive brewery heir.
I love comedies from that era. Many are so suggestive I am surprised they passed the Hays Office.

I guess you're right. Even if a young Grace Kelly, the epytome of beauty, came to me wearing Hammam Bouquet, and tried to convert me, she would probably fail!

Yes, they had to be very subtle, had to insinuate and suggest things.

Have you seen the movie "Trouble in Paradise" by Ernst Lubitsch?

And a must-see for all movie lovers, as are all of Preston Sturges's films.

The Lady Eve is not only my favorite Sturges film but also my favorite Stanwyck film. She's just irresistible in it.

But I'm not so convinced that it was being inferred that Fonda's character was gay. It always seemed to me more likely that he was just being characterized as a sheltered and naive intellectual. A "bookworm", in the parlance of those days, a fairly common film trope in that era (see Stanwyck's similar "Ball of Fire").

IIRC, it's about a perfume heiress. Lubitsch's movies are about as suggestive as you can get. Case in point: One Hour with You with Jeanette Macdonald and Maurice Chevalier.

Yes, yes, it is the one about the perfume heiress. It seems Perfume is a recurring motif of old classics, LOL

I watched Shawshank Redemption last night - there's a related scene, not to do with perfume, but rather sex-starved men fetishising/feeling the itense allure of a facet of feminine beauty. Sort of relevant!

@slpfrsly. Love that scene from Shawshank Redemption. I guess we don’t fully appreciate what we have until it’s taken from us.

That’s what I love about these old movies. They’re more engaging as they require more ‘read-in-between-the-lines’ effort from the audience. Unlike the brain dead styles of more recent times, frequently bitch-slapping audience with more graphic scenes that left little to the imagination.
