Thumbs up Re: SOTD: Sunday, 21st June, 2020

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

You have all my sympathy, JR. We're also just entering our Long Regional Nightmare; it probably won't be below 90F/33C for the next three months or more. I'm fighting back today with Annick Goutal's Eau du Sud.

I wish they had put a perfume I liked in that beautiful Hypnose bottle. Maybe I should just try to find an empty bottle of it.

PS: I didn't know Miz Q had ever done any modeling!

Good Sunday, good solstice, good summer, everyone!

Alas, I think the remainder of my Guerlain Véga has turned.

My cats woke me up for their three a.m. feeding. I remembered reading in the Old Farmer's Almanac, that the planets would be a beautiful sight, with Saturn and Jupiter rising around midnight, and a very red magnitude zero Mars around two in the morning. The quiet, the balmy air, and the clear sky were irresistible, so I put on my garden Crocs—and pants—and went to the front lawn. Despite streetlights it was a beautiful sight. Mars to the east; to the south were side-by-side Saturn and Jupiter. In the west was that twinkly variable star, Arcturus, and overhead was the Summer Triangle: Vega, Altair and Deneb.

At some point I just lay on the grass, on this street of duplexes and college kids, and gaped at the sky. I'm on a busy street, less busy since COVID19, and relished minutes of no traffic at all. A gaudy motorcycle alive in light and music would flourish by every now and then. Most of these motorcyclists are black, and I have long thought the flamboyance and verve they stir up is a will to be defiantly present, visible, audible, and joyful; living well as the best revenge, now more than ever.

The Sunday papers had arrived, so I made some coffee and sat on my side porch with wee hours jazz on a transistor radio. Every now and then I'd venture to the front yard and view the planets slowly arcing westward, brilliant and stately, with no competition from the about-to-be new moon. Birds awoke and sang as the deep blue gave way to crepuscular pre-dawn. I finished the NYT Sunday crossword on my porch and went back to sleep around five a.m.

Waking up for more coffee and to reflect on my impromptu solitary solstice observance, I donned the Véga as a reminder of the stars. Alas, even applied gingerly, the sandalwood is obscured by a cloying sweet/sour/sharp note that I don't recall. Maybe my taste has changed, or my olfaction. I don't think of Véga as remotely summery, but the urge to wear a scent named for that brilliant star was hard to resist. Scrub. Rethink.

    [leaves room and returns]

Aha! the amended SOTD is Jacomo Silences, green as summer itself, and named for the quiet ecstasy of my night of stolen bliss. Ah, my song of the day will be Oliver Nelson's Stolen Moments:

jujy54 - thanks for the beautiful story. Sorry to hear your Vega is not what it used to be. But that happens sometimes. Which I suppose makes it ever more apparent that we should enjoy all of the fragrances we have Now. Not hoard them and wait for Tomorrow. I forget that sometimes.

I made myself a nice big breakfast this morning - something I rarely do (I normally skip breakfast) but I will go running in a bit, lots of cold brew coffee first. Yesterday's trip to the Botanical Garden in Davie, FL (I saw a ylang ylang tree!) was amazing but it took all of my energy yesterday and even though I slept okay...I felt a bit 'off'...maybe like jujy54 it was the Solstice. Not sure.

I wanted a fragrance to wear today that said 'bitter' (I know...have no idea where that came from) so I sprayed on this one...which I have always said reminds me of a very bitter tonic water. Simultaneously bitter and refreshing. And now that it's been disco'd, it's cheap as chips. There really isn't another fragrance that I've smelled that reminds me of this accord - it's very unique. It's not your typical Mugler 'vibe' that's for sure, which was probably why it was disco'd.
