    Default Prices going up.... again

Is it just me or have fragrance houses sneakily raised prices recently? I read about a price hike in a Vuitton thread and I know big luxury houses like Chanel are raising prices on their standard hand bags. I guess the reasoning is that very wealthy customers continue to consume during an economic crisis so might as well raise prices since sales are down from the more middle class customer. Still, it stinks for it to trickle down to fragrance lines.

Checking out the Frederic Malle website here in the U.S. I could swear things are 20-30 more than they were a month ago and same with Le Labo. Or maybe I'm just out of touch and remember incorrectly. What really makes me want to cry is I searched for a similar thread before posting and found one from 2010 complaining about FM raising prices and those prices seem like such a deal compared to now.

So far seems like European sites which are already about 30% cheaper than U.S. haven't changed. Am I being paranoid or has anyone else noticed this?

I personally haven't noticed this, but it could be. Then again, I don't usually fixate on the price when I make a fragrance purchase.

A few of the Frederic Malles are up from last I saw, but not many, and the ones that are up are up only by maybe 5 or 10 dollars. Many of the big ones, like Portrait of a Lady and Carnal Flower and Promise, are the same.

The Le Labos are the same.

    I think you remember incorrectly.

Haha yea could be. On Malle that's what I noticed, a few things just like 10-20 more than I remember and others the same, could be just a currency exchange thing. I know Le Labo did raise prices but it was probably awhile ago and I only noticed now, but I remember last time I was in the market for a Le Labo a year or two ago the 100ml was something like 260 (now 280).

EDIT: I meant there to be a question mark in the thread title, sorry for any hysteria induced

I believe the Le Labo price changed sometime in the last six months, probably this past spring. I think it went up around $5 for the 50ml bottle.

Not a surprise. I feel your frustration.

It just goes to show how the price of a fragrance doesn't reflect the quality of it (there are some exceptions, of course). It makes me devastated reading about the old prices of fragrances. I read somewhere that around 10 or 15 years ago the Chanel Exclusifs used to be roughly $100. Also, many of the classic Lauders in the updated bottles (Azzuree, Cinnabar) have gotten more expensive (from like $20-$30 to now $50 or $60)

What's even worse is that even with all of these price increases, the fragrances have gotten worse due to reformulations.

    It's absurd and absolutely ridiculous.

I lack the economic depth and philosophy to really discuss this in depth, but it seems to me that a category like high end fragrance (niche) is ripe for pricing abuse.
The "average" person is just not going to consider a niche scent priced at over $100 or so. So most designer scents tow the line on carefully modulated price increases that don't seem out of step with quasi normal "inflation."

But a person who is spending $200 on a niche frag isn't going to be all that daunted if the cost goes up $30 or so in year.

Many of the niche houses routinely increase their prices disproportionate to anything resembling inflation.

I am amused that LV has now jacked up price of 100ml of their newest entry to $360...that's a 44% increase over their more recent offerings. Do I really believe the cost of materials warrants that? I don't...

    I bought 100ml of GIT in mid 90s for $175. It's now $410, That's a 235% increase.

Veblens "conspicuous consumers" don't care that these scents are outrageously priced. They like it.

I agree with what you're saying but it also opens the infamous discussion of what is "niche". There have been other threads and I have done some research and for example two houses I like a lot - Penhaligons and Goutal - have both had significant price increases in the last year or so. I don't know that I would call those niche, but no need to argue that..... but it seems like maybe your $100 is a good line, anything getting near to that seems to be shooting up or sizes getting smaller for the same money. Have read that in high dollar clothing/accessories there has been a huge move to realreal, gilt, etc. and the "not new" stigma is fading for higher worth people than in the past. So will this happen with fragrance, where more of the $400 bottles will end up trading than now???

I have noticed that bumped up price tag of some fragrances from various high end designer and niche brands.

Luckily I've bought so many fragrances and more importantly backup bottles from fragrances that I really enjoy - as I'm convinced that it doesn't get any better the next years (reformulations, discontinues etc.) - that these will easily last me for the rest of my lifetime.

So companies could do what they want from now on. I don't care.

No, it's not. The oud line from Louis Vuitton has always had a higher price point. Their oud line started with the launch of Ombre Nomade two years ago, and it was priced at $330, so the price for their oud line has only gone up $30, which is an increase of less than 10%.

AFAIC, LV or any price gougers can keep their outrageous prices and shove those bottles up their collective you-know-where. Apart from a few artisanal brands and maybe 2-3 favorite perfumers I follow I’m just about done buying full bottles of anything.
