Default Have you had a positive compliment that kind of hurts

    For me :
I’ve been wearing my favorite creed’s for almost a whole month during quarantine (Aventus , GIT , SMW , ...etc) , and I kept getting quite a good bit of compliments from my family , and all is fine, ...
Until i received my bottle of lacoste Lhomme (wanted something cheap to abuse) , and was told that it’s the best fragrance I’ve worn ;(

I've never had such an experience.

So far, did never get any compliments or positive feedback that was hurtful, in fact even bothered in the least.

However-while a bit off topic-was sometimes a bit surprised that fragrances did personally underrate, buy cheap etc. actually got better feedback, while more upscale choices went more unnoticed.

My husband likes a few drugstore scents (Dana, especially) as much as some of my Chanels and Guerlains, but it doesn't cause me dismay...he isn't influenced by expectations or knowledge about what he's smelling, and as long as he isn't put off by something, we're both happy.

I have found that people who don't have a serious interest in fragrance often prefer the smell of cheaper, safer, more generic scents as their noses haven't been able to evolve as ours have through the smelling of many different, and often more challenging fragrances. Before I became seriously interested in perfume I really liked the smell of Burberry Brit. Was it the 2002 Lacoste l'Homme you were wearing or the 2017 release?

Someone told me once that I smelled really good, and that it reminded them of their grandma who always collected perfume.

I was wearing Dior Homme (2005)

lol, yeah happened to me both when wearing Aventus and CdNIM, I don't like them particularly and got massive attention when giving them a try on separate occasions, also Layton. All got big attention mostly from nice strangers and younger people who aren't my usual social type, I specially dislike Layton so that was the "worst"... It didnt hurt though I already knew theyre closer to mainstream than my own taste.

Smells ok (barely qualifies as a compliment) but you've got nicer perfumes.

I had a co-worker once tell me I smelled nice and it reminded them of their dad. I thought 'well, I'm not interested in this girl anymore' lol.

Uomo Urban Feel by Salvatore Ferragamo

A very friendly (but slightly overbearing) SA given to more trumpeting his wares than actually listening and learning about my interests/curiosities insisted to the Nth degree that I take a sample of this with me home. Even thought I had already sampled it at the counter and gave it a pass he simply would not accept defeat. The SA explained - as though I my experience gives me at least a nose above the average mall consumer - that, “Oh no, you really need to fully wear this and see how you’ll come to love it.” Whatever. I obliged him and took the sample home with me.

I’ve only worn this twice. In fairness, it’s definitely not my thing. But? . . . but on each occasion of wearing it I received two compliments: one from a friend and one from a total stranger.

    Pfft! . . . of course.

But what kinda frayed me a little is that here I am, a non-blind buyer who samples carefully and chooses fragrances that I really enjoy, and even hope fit my style/constitution/feel for a particular day. And while I am in NO way even looking for compliments (as my entries on those threads attest) it’s kinda frustrating that when I finally receive a compliment it’s for something that actually runs inimical to my preferred scent choices. Of all the scents I own and love (and am testing) someone chooses something running against the grain.

And of course it’s something from Alberto Morrillas! I should have known.

    Goddamit, Morillas!

I definitely gave her a hard time about it. Something like 'oh, so that's what you're into, eh' and she rolled her eyes.

Dior Homme is basically a leather flanker to Shalimar anyway.

LOL. Funny that one! I tend to think that what I wear is just for myself. Compliments are secondary Thanks for sharing!

People are more likely to compliment a familiar designer scent . Same goes for familiar and common food.
    Current top choices:
    1- Portrait of A Lady
    2- Guerlain Derby
    3- 40 knots by Xerjoff
4- Bond 9 New York Oud
    5- Mamluk by Xerjoff
    6- Coromandel by Chanel
7- Back to Black , by Kilian
    8- Chanel 19
    9- Dior Oud Isphahn
    10- Richwood by Xerjoff
