    Neither are quite my style, but I really think Antaeus is an excellent fragrance. That would easily be my choice between the two.

    I would choose Bel Ami over Antaeus any day. Don't get me wrong, I love Antaeus but Bel Ami is just more wearable and to my nose smells more timeless.

    yes I think so, for deep vintage they are both outstanding and I enjoy each one on occasion.
    FYI: I spray all fragrances on clothing, never on skin.

    These are two great choices if not only because the current formulations are good representations -- at least that's what I've heard in regards to Bel Ami having not tried it extensively. Antaeus is great as it is don't listen to anyone who whines about the death of it. Personally I say go for the Chanel.

    Bel Ami by far. Wish I got a bottle when I had the chance. Very classic and timeless.

    Antaeus I can respect, but it is dated. I don't put that label on many fragrances. I agree with what Kaern said. And it is also kinda stinky.
    Seeking: Bottles/decants : of Pomegranate Noir, Midnight in Paris EDP, Feeling Man, Essence of John Galliano, Azzaro pour Homme (vintage),...etc.

    Seeking decant/sample of Aramis Calligraphy Rose, Penhaligon's Esprit de Roi, PdE Ambre Russe, Jil Sander Feeling Man ....etc. I have samples to swap.

    I only own Antaeus so far but I'd like to pick up Bel Ami at some point. Not the shaker because that sells for ridiculous prices, but some form of it.

    This one is easy
    If vintage bottles -> Antaeus
    If current formulation -> BelAmi

    Antaeus is more castoreum leather while Bel Ami is more petrol leather.
    That's to say, Antaeus is muskier and drier, while Bel ami is spicier and pushes off skin more.

    Hmm. Thanks, ZC. I like both descriptions but I've heard mixed emotions on both of these and I wondered why.

    Because leather itself is something of a mixed-reaction genre, and by leather I mean "try to smell like leather" and not "let's drop some sweet rubbery raspberry BS compound in here and call it leather".

    So they both evoke more of a full grain, real hide leather, in addition of the castoreum and petrol you mentioned?

    Yuppers! Especially Bel Ami, which uses isobutyl quinoline to add the tannery vibe to it, like walking into an Hermès leather shop.

    ZC notes are very accurate. I'll give you another take.

    Both have been reformulated a bit to meet more modern sensibilities.

    ANTAEUS is probably the more dated smelling. i.e. "Mature" I don't know myself what else might smell similar.

    BEL AMI does not exactly smell modern, but both PUREDISTANCE M and ROJA DOVE FETISH seem very much inspired by BEL AMI.

    Both are sort of grown up gentleman scents with a little bit of edge (nasty).

    Hard! Maybe Bel Ami.
    I don’t understand.It is so vast that surpasses all understanding.Understanding is always limited.But not understanding can have no boundaries.I feel like I'm much more complete when I don't understand.Not understanding,like I say,is a gift.Not understanding,but not as a simple-minded.The good thing is to be intelligent and not understand.It's a strange blessing, like having craziness without being crazy.It is a meek disinterest,it is a stupid sweetness.

    Default Antaeus or Bel Ami?

    Already wrote in this thread, but I would say as a keen enthusiastic on this genre of scent that you will end up with both sooner or later.

    Personally Bel Ami is quite a way ahead. For me Bel Ami has become one of the manliest scents out there and is a joint signature scent along with one or two others. Very versatile as well.

    As for Antaeus, well it isn’t a runner up here; just another very good take on the leather theme. Along with Aramis, they make up the Holy Trinity of leathers.

    Both Antaeus and Bel Ami are great in current formulations, with the former having a slightly fresher and soapier appeal than the latter.

    I have a current Antaeus that I still enjoy and after wearing a sample of current Bel Ami over the past month, I now want a bottle. As much as i like Antaeus, the Bel Ami is more versatile and less likely to offend anyone.
    Side note: I once smelled Pure Distance M and was indifferent, i actually prefer the current Bel Ami to the much more expensive "inspiration".

    I must say I quite agree with this analysis. Bel Ami in current form has much better ingredients that touch on “leather”, whereas M seems to conjure up an effect of leather based on a lot of new age ingredients that aren’t quite the same quality as those in the Hermes.

    I would take Bel Ami over Puredistance any day and that’s not even taking into account the eye-watering price or the hash-job of a reformulation of the latter.
