    Default Ambergris

    Hi,

Anyone has an idea where can I purchase Ambergris, which will be from a trusted seller?

I saw also that there is a source from Pigmy whale and not only from Sperm whale, which I knew before. Is it the same quality/smell or inferior?

    Thanks

I’m not sure on who the best supplier would be for you due to your location but I can say that Christine at Perfumersupplyhouse.com has excellent quality ingredients, including different ambergris tinctures. Perfumers apprentice also sells pure ambergris here https://shop.perfumersapprentice.com...e-natural.aspx.

As for the second part of your question I have no good answer for you. Would love to know more if someone has any input.

Alcohol or sandalwood. If you want a tincture, use alcohol.

You appear to be in Israel, so I don't know if the UK is good for shipping, but they will have the most dealers. In the US, it is illegal to own or sell ambergris because of the endangered species act. But it is legal in the UK and other places. Maybe try these dealers since they sell samples, you could save a little money by seeing which type you like:

Natural materials always have variances from batch to batch. Jasmine grandflorium isn't going to be exactly the same from region to region, or even from the same grower from season to season. But ambergris is incredibly more varied since it starts in the stomach of a whale. Then the environment, time adrift at sea, and time on the beach all make variances to the aroma.

Generally, black ambergis is more fecal than white. But you are never going to have total consistency with ambergris.

By the way, assuming I purchase or make a tincture of 3% - any ideas on how much of this I dose in a perfume (lowest to highest) ?

The usual range in Poucher's formulas is 10-40 ppt (1-4%) but goes as high as about 200 ppt.

(Poucher often writes tincture usage as part of final dilution, for example 13% concentrate, 3% tincture at 3 percent strength, 4% musk tincture also at 3 percent, and 80% alcohol. That is how the above high-use example was written.)

The most I have used is 50 ppt of 10% tincture.

EDIT: exact calculation of the above example would come to 187.5 ppt if still treating the musk tincture as diluent, or 186 if considering only the musk content as part of the concentrate rather than entire tincture weight, so "about 190" would have been more accurate.

    Parts per thousand.

As many times materials are used at only fractions of a percent, many perfumers prefer figuring per thousand rather than per hundred.
