My father's Old Spice, Aqua Velva, and Aramis remain fond childhood memories. My mother wore no scent that I can recall. The other scent of my childhood is that of the liturgical incense offered up at our local church on special feast days. The gold and black grains of "Pontifical" were like holy magic--just add heat and...WHOOSH!...one could almost hear the angels' wings rustling around the altar. The ice-pick intensity of the Ralph Lauren Polo Madness of the early 1980s disturbed me, an innocent child of the 1960s who had managed to avoid drenching himself in patchouli during the whole of the Counterculture Era. I made only two purchases in my twenties, Balestra Pour Homme and Halston Z-14. I enjoyed both. Then (oh the horror of the memory!), I was traumatised by a bottle--yes, an entire bottle!--of Aramis' Tuscany Per Uomo which was poured--yes, poured!--over a friend by another crazy-drunken friend during a wild night at the infamous Garage, a rocking gay bar in Montréal. The expanding scent cloud was so strong you could see its evil eyes glowing poison-green, almost radioactive in its intensity. This experience prompted me to renounce all applied fragrance, and I turned to exotic incense compounding and burning for my olfactory pleasures instead. But, I'm older now, the trauma has faded. It's time to awaken a sense too long ignored. As a mid-life crisis, it's a lot cheaper than a Ferrari. |
