As a child, I used to sniff my fingers a lot, which my brother and sister still rib me about to this day. One of my favourite smells is the tiny chemical aroma released just in the instant after biting a fingernail. When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I wrote a poem at school that featured the line, "I like the smell of goldfish-in-a-bowl, and I like the smell of pet-rol" - goldfish in a bowl (which I don't particularly like the smell of) being the only thing I could think of to rhyme with petrol (which I do, or at least I certainly did as a child - now it just smells like money going down the drain). So I think it all goes back to my childhood. When I was about 11, I took a long bath, then proceeded to spray and dowse myself with every scent my dad happened to have in his bathroom cabinet, including Brut, Platinum Egoiste, something by Floris and lots of others. I went downstairs to be greeted by my mum and a female family friend, who told me I smelled beautiful. From then on, I have been a bit obsessed with scents. My wife thinks I'm gay, but thankfully one of our sons seems to also enjoy sniffing things quite a lot, so that proves it, it's genetic, and I'm NOT a freak. |
