Reviews of Ode

Guerlain – ODE (1955)

Distinctly feminine to the nth degree, Ode does bring to mind Patou’s Joy in its depth and richness, but the bright peach note makes a decided difference in its rounded sweetness. There is in addition the distinct green note of hyacinth and the vanillic heliotrope supports the peach beautifully.

The jasmine and rose combo at the center is quite strong and darkly luminous with the dry notes of orris and violet grounding this seemingly baseless composition, with only a faint musk note claiming that honor.

Ode has the feel of an old-fashioned floral parfum from the 1930s. A little of this will go a long way, since projection and sillage are quite powerful and long-lasting. This is definitely a scent for the mature woman and most effectively worn in the cold winter months.

Sadly discontinued for some time now, the vintage is still available from private sellers on the internet. Ode was re-orchestrated in 2005 and I have not as yet sampled that version, but do try to locate the original vintage. Seemingly it was one of the last of the great Guerlains.

A stunning fruity floral with a rich rose and jasmine heart.

I have to say Ode is the most beautiful vintage extrait I have had the pleasure to wear to date. I have tried many of the masterpieces of perfumery in extrait form but none have made me fall in love instantly as Ode.
The well balanced jasmine and rose are not overpowered or overpowering as the iris and sandalwood cut the vibration of the musk to a long sensual hum.

At the start I get a strong aldehyde blast that soon developed into a very nice jasmine impression. Soon the middle phase sets in with an amazingly rich, beautiful velvety dark rose, that is complemented
with one of the most beautiful iris notes I can remember. The latter is becoming gradually dominant, with an aroma as if one is holding a bunch of the best iris in one's hand. At time the rose comes back into the foreground, with added rose leaf and stem impressions, alternating in the leading part with the super-iris - a spectacle of oscillating olfactory beauty and excitement. In the base sandalwood and, mainly, a lovely and well-balanced musk is added; he latter in the lead towards the end. The ingredients are of unsurpassed quality, the blending is sublime, silage and projection are very good and the longevity surpasses seven hours. An seminal rich floral masterpiece and one of my favourite Guerlains.

A senior Basenote who lives in Europe told me you can still go to Guerlain's Paris shop and sniff this divine frag - mysteriously discontinued. I recall it as a billow of tuberose and jasmine over Guerlinade - as Ohiolee has said - Joy to the max.

If the Devil is interested I would sell my soul for a bottle of the original.
