Rose Perfection fragrance notes

Reviews of Rose Perfection

It's cliché I know - it smells like perfume, for the first moment. Then, it is like a blast of Aqua Net hairspray. Both impressions fade quickly. The alcohol was pretty "loud" there, I suppose...

Then a moment of lipstick accord. Rose here is a shape-shifter. It is green at times. It becomes realistic, as if I am inhaling heirloom blooms that sit right next to me. Then, an earthiness. Later, the lipstick accord returns. This is a fun rose perfume, with its twists and turns. A pleasure to wear, simple. It changes many times within hours of wear. A must-try rose.

I like rose fragrances and I like Piguet, so it was easy to like this one. It's in the style of V (formerly Visa) and V Intense from the same house: a sweet, slightly powdery floral.

My girlfriend did not like it. In nine months, this has been the only thing she has complained about. The rose note was off for her, and didn't smell like real rose. From wearing many rose fragrances over the last couple years, it smells just like a natural rose note to me (as I learned to know it from other perfumes).

Excited by the revival of the classic Piguet perfumes, I was later disappointed by their newer creations, losing all interest in the line around the time their weird and claggy Oud appeared. So I come to Rose Perfection (which was launched a year later) by chance rather than design.
It’s a downy, rich, reddish, somewhat stewed rose with depth and a haze of powder and dust around it – and will do fine as a soliflore. It will have you smelling of… well, roses, and it has a certain woody dryness to it that’s in the Montale tradition. All that being said, there’s a distinct lack of excitement on my part as it’s all quite familiar with no compensating boost in quality to lift it above similar offerings.

When Carlsberg launched an advertising campaign in the UK that described their beer as 'probably the best lager in the world' it was a mighty success. The British loved the comic irony of this modest boast and began to drink the stuff by the bucket load (but then, they have never needed much encouragement when it comes to that.) What's more, the expression "probably..." entered popular consciousness as a catch phrase. The beer wasn't actually all that special, it was just as much the humourous conceit people were buying into.

Unfortunately, there is no such lightness of touch where Piguet's marketing is concerned. When the adjective laden hyperbole that surrounds Perfection : 'voluptuous, sensual, sophisticated' etc, is contrasted with the smell of cardboard and chemicals that accompanies the odour of rose it only serves to highlight just how cynical a work this is.

When it comes to roses there are surely lots of ones that don't insult the buyer with such overblown rhetoric in their attempts to cover up an unpleasantly cheap formula.

Rose Perfection; probably not the best rose perfume in the world.

All I get in this product is rose, nothing but rose. That does not mean that this is a static or ultra-linear creation; on the contrary.

It starts off with a fairly standard rose, but after the first hour a fresh scent of wet rose stems and leaves inject a fresh and green components into the olfactory mix. After another hour the rose turns into a dark, somber and deep Bulgarian rose.

After about four hours it flags temporarily and retreats to being close to my skin, only to re-emerge as a fresh, light and elegant rose blossom.

This is more a symphony of rose, playing with various aspects of this divine flower. The sillage is moderate, the projection good, and I get six hours of longevity on my skin.

Whilst never of outstanding quality or excellence, it is never annoyingly synthetic, and the idea of devising a fragrance around the various aspects of one flower only is not without its originality. 3.25/5.
