Reviews of Surrender

Acetoned alcohol start, which for some, can be troublesome, predominates in the opening. A few minutes on the skin and a beautiful Leather Chypre unfolds. I identify a rigid orris stripe across a canvas of almost Cedar-ed Sandal. A few minutes later a bouquet of Rose, Violet and Ethereal Jasmine, billows. Ambergris airiness? The Sandal takes on a sweetness unmistakable, dances with the Floral to throw off a whispered Powder and Cosmetic.

I would date this, cute miniature bottle, possibly from the 60's.

I just found this perfume in an antique mall today. It's sealed with the original box. 60.00

I don't want to open it! So thank you for sharing your thoughts.

From 1923 to 1961 Ciro created approximately 25 scents, presented in beautiful Baccarat bottles that are treasured today by collectors, irregardless of whether they have any content.

I have only experienced/reviewed one other Ciro - Reflexions (correct spelling) and liked it. However, Surrender is far superior and was deservedly their biggest success.

This is a spicy, warm ambergris/civet dominated chypre, beginning with a caramel effect, perhaps some patchouli. The violet and jasmine float ethereally as top notes, but this is really an in depth chypre. The generous use of orris and real ambergris give this a dry down best described as warm floral leather.

I'll be looking for a full bottle on Ebay. My sample was vintage edc.

First edit: The more I live with this the more I find it to be almost identical to Coty's original Chypre. To be sought out by those loving that classic but unable to find or afford it on Ebay.

"Surrender" was Ciro's most popular perfume, and I can understand why. It's a powdery chypre in 1930s style. Like similar chypre perfumes of this era (such as Vol de Nuit, original Presence de Houbigant, Aphrodisia by Faberge, etc) it hums with a salty, subtle sweetness from pinches of ambergris & vanilla, which push it ever so slightly into oriental territory. But it's not sweet enough to be considered truly oriental IMO. Surrender has very subtle florals and maybe even a drop of bergamot oil amid the main accord of powdery oakmoss/ambergris/vanilla/musk. Some might think it smells a little bit musty, or perhaps just old fashioned or motherly. It's mellow & powdery, lovely & harmonious.
