About Panda (original)

The company says:

Panda Eau de Parfum is a fresh green fragrance that combines the delightful scents of bamboo and zisu leaves to send you on an unforgettable aromatic adventure. Your journey begins at a quaint Sichuan pepper farm surrounded by mountain streams and then leads you through a forest of osmanthus flowers as you finally make your way into a cozy garden filled with juicy mandarin trees and blooming lilies. Panda is a scent ensemble that will truly awaken and rejuvenate your senses.

The outstanding feature here in my view is the contrast between the fruity green body and the earthy undertone. The sweet fruitiness resembles not so much apple as pineapple, there might even be a nod to Frederick Malle's Music for a While, which is also famous for its pineapple note.

The earthiness, representing the forest floor, is the same as I included in my wedding perfume for my daughter - very difficult to get the dosage exactly right, but the balance is nicely achieved. A successful marriage of fruity-green, floral and earthy: surely a recipe for happiness.

Blissfully calming. A green I actually enjoy. Watery, in a way I can't describe. Tea notes I find genuine. Mimosa, that finally I "get"; that doesn't make me nauseated (because it is not starchy here). The flowers are ethereal as though they are dipped in dew, dried by a breeze. Musky moss finishes this, on my skin. I only wish it lasted a little longer.

An absolute powerhouse of a scent. I don't find this fresh, airy or watery. It's a big, lumbering beast bursting with bold spicy greens. There's also something that packs a fruit-punch. I like it. But wow, a bottle would be a commitment. I buried a week-old test strip at the back of a drawer and I can smell it several hours later on the clothes that come out of it. Too big to wear. Good for scenting old wooden furniture.

Panda opens with an interesting mix of bamboo, green tea, vetiver, shiso and a few other organic green essences which provides a rainforest leafy aroma. Mixed with the greens and more apparent late in the fragrance evolution are dry warm nutty characteristics from Pemou root or Siam wood, incense and sandalwood which provide a nice resting spot for the pleasant greens. This is a very appropriate environmental atmosphere for a meandering Panda and the fragrance makes a convincing zoological story. It smells good but not enough to get me excited to buy a full bottle. The presentation, story and concept won me over immediately - but the fragrance is medium to above average at best. Zoologist presents that rare fragrance product line that ties together such an interesting story and presentation that I am tempted to collect the entire series just to have it in hand. However, this would never be a daily wear scent for me.

Panda is a green fragrance. It's theme is green leaves, green tea, green moss. It is a spring/summer fragrance with a clean smell. I'm not personally a fan of green type frags, I don't really like vetiver. This is well done and complex, and would go perfect with a summer picnic, or outdoor activities. There is a difference between a great fragrance that you don't care for, and a poorly made fragrance. This is great, but I wouldn't wear it myself.

Whoahhhhh. What an amazing fragrance is it guys!!!!!! Supremely green fairy bamboo from the "wilderness". Sooo fresh and invigorating. The "wonderponds" fragrance, an inebriating musky-floral-aqueous masterpiece of "vegetal-oriented mental evasion", the dodgy microcosm of woodland creatures as gnomes, elfs, genies, batterflies and the fairies. A jubilation of enchanted streams, hypnotic echoes of drops, silvan untouchable creatures, floating gigantic leaves and quiescent ponds. A peaceful fragrance. Ideally a new generation-Chanel n. 19, Zoologist Panda roots its substance over the core of one of my favorite elements in perfumery (the super chic-languid poetic osmanthus, as supported by watery lillies, oriental blossoms, bamboo, zisu leaves, exotic roots and graceful mimosa), an element (a royal osmanthus) which in this case is vivid, full of vibrant silvan energy in its leafy-vegetal exchanged aura. Flowers are "fluidy", water-drenched and floating on the immobile pond's waters. Osmanthus (and several aqueous languid florals of the enchanted forests) is enclosed in a super peppery-musky "aqueous" silky-fluidy "aura of green tea, zisu, bamboo, citrus, oriental blossoms, musky vetiver and general resinous/suedish silkiness". Green tea is a starry element with its dry-tart citric/green vibe. Woodsy resins, suedish synth elements and exotic (smooth) musk (a powdery vetiver and soapy musk) provide a super smooth aura counteracting the citric/green general "botanic" tartness. The green-floral accord is vaguely medicinal and kind of mystic. The whole balance is fixed over this marvelous game of soft-tart contrasts, overall in the magic round of this general fresh vegetal-oriented poetry. There is something arcane and "childish" (in the sense of childish dreams-conjuring). Atmosphere apart the final outcome is anyway a super classy-chic creation exuding class and fresh sensuality for an indipendent dynamic woman (more than vaguely a la Jul et Mad Terrasse a St Germain). A surprisingly "european in style" north american piece of perfumery, a quite sapient/mature twist on fragrances. One of the best bamboo/tea-based florals I've ever tested on skin along my miserable career and a hugely recommended creation (truly awakening your senses) from the surprising Zoologist's magic workshop. A piece of silvan poetry in perfumery and a real work of art. A winner.
