La Religieuse fragrance notes

Reviews of La Religieuse

This one's hard to get a bead on. Icy white florals and shadowy incense underpinned by faint musk and fainter civetone (the latter, in truth, I don't detect at all) would seem a promising combination in the hands of Lutens/Sheldrake. If you're looking for performance, though, you won't find it here. This is a whispering fragrance, surprising—and disappointing—at Lutens' "Haute Concentration" price point. The periodic wafts are actually quite lovely after the iffy opening passes, but even for something intentionally subtle, I want a bit more. I tried spraying more liberally on reapplication and it made little difference.

Besides, do I really need a less profound De Profundis?

I recently tried La Religieuse in an attempt to expand my go-to wardrobe...guess I am feeling a bit bored, so I purchased several perfume samples.

My experience with La Religieuse is one of total disappointment! I anxiously awaited the arrival of this perfume and chose to wear it over the past few days. Not sure how & why the Serge Lutens PR folks are describing this (as they are) but I do not detect many (if any) of the listed notes...jasmine (yes, yes, yes) but civet, musk and incense? No way!

From opening to end, I sadly detected nothing but an over-powering almost synthetic jasmine note...that's about it. I waited throughout each day and from opening-to-dry down, I sadly could not detect any additional mid-or base notes. No complex, or variant notes of any kind...just jasmine.

I absolutely LOVE a lovely jasmine fragrance that is complex, moody, dark, dirty, earthy...a jasmine scent balanced by other notes that is complex & mysterious. I adore Jasmine Imperiatrice Eugenie by Creed, which is a beautiful, mysterious & complicated fragrance. But La Religieuse is ho-hum, nondescript and actually boring.

If you seek a jasmine fragrance that is unique & hypnotic (almost dark), please try Creed's Jasmine Imperiatrice Eugenie...a much nicer fragrance, in my opinion...jasmine fragrance, that is.

And if you are like me, La Religieuse will disappoint as an "incense" fragrance. Very little incense, no smokiness, zero earthiness/civet, etc of any kind.

The heavyweight reviewers have given this a right royal bashing here.

I will concede that it doesn't have the aura of a fragrance that costs over £120 but I am wearing it at work now and the 4 main notes are clearly identifiable and the accord smells stunning to me.

Personally, I think if the animalic aspects had been pushed higher in the mix, it would have made the fragrance double sexy.

I'm almost out on a limb here.

Cheap florals, plastic, followed by a generic, mall-fragrance-for-women dry down of clinical musks.

One wonders how this can be conceived as a 'niche' fragrance. Considering it's Serge Lutens - it's an absolute shocker.

I had to try this for myself, despite the number of reviews panning it, because the notes list made it sound right up my street. Alas, I should have heeded the reviews, & left it at that. It's all true: the "incompleteness" of the jasmine note, the similarity to a hundred department store fragrances and/or functional products, the general synthetic, "plasticky" feel, the almost total absence of incense or animalics. A shockingly disappointing excuse for a Lutens.

It opens with a flat, fruity jasmine, joined fifteen minutes in by a kind of grey, dusty-peppery note which I assume is supposed to be incense, but it's faint. One hour in, something resembling musk begins to warm & soften it, & there's a vaguely aquatic note in the heart, before it settles into a musky floral base five hours in. This stage is pleasant but generic, & nothing more. It's still going softly seven hours in, when I head for the shower so I can forget this experience & apply something more interesting.
