About Acqua di Bergamotto

The company say:

An early evening breeze takes the smell of rosemary toward the Ionian sea. Alongside the Bergamot, Neroli orange trees grow, the smell of their blossom infusing the air.

Reviews of Acqua di Bergamotto

Bergamot oil and neroli open this one for a powdery citrus top, smells very similar to the gold standard of this genre 7411.

This one is simple, linear, and doesn't project much, or last very long. It smells good, but so does 4711, and costs a fraction of the price. Even with AdB at sale prices, it's still overpriced for what you're getting.

After owning my bottle for many years, I've decided to sell it, as I reach for many others in this same genre that our perform this one, much more often. Not to say this is a bad fragrance, but it definitely isn't anything you probably haven't already smelled.

Soapy clean and green citrus opening. Definitely get the vetiver and seems to fit into the classic cologne genre but with modern updates. Into the drydown it has a salty, musky feel, almost like MI minus the fruitiness.

Wife said it was nice but nothing special. I agree, versatile and nice for everyday wear, especially in warmer temps.

Projection is average or maybe just slightly below that and longevity is in the 4-5 hour range on my skin.

The real USP of this fragrance - yet another citrus tested on holiday - is the inclusion of Zegna's proprietary Italian bergamot. What difference this makes is unknown; but if you're in the market for a refreshing citrus accord, this is of discernibly good quality and pretty good value for the price. Decent vetiver drydown, never loses the zing of the citrus.

The opening blast displays an equal contribution of the lovely bergamot and a very nice vetiver. The latter is fresh and with minimally woodsy undertones, and lacks any significant earthiness.

Soon a herbal rosemary component arises, and merges with the opening notes to a delightful, fresh and invigorating mix. A bright neroli with minimal sweetness is added, with whiffs of hesperidic touches fleetingly present.

I get moderate sillage, good projection, and four hours of longevity on my skin.

Comparing this cheerful summer scent to the other summery bergamot-based creation of this house, i.e. Italian Bergamot, the latter has more lemony characteristics on me. Whilst Acqua di Bergamotto features rosemary instead of more traditional ingredients like clary sage, it is more in the line of the traditional Eau de Cologne, and in the tradition of 4711 and Farina's Kölnisch Wasser. The juxtaposition of a more traditional with a more citrus-influenced Cologne is done by other houses; Penhaligon's Extract of Limes vs. its Eau de Cologne comes to mind.

A straightforward Cologne then this one is, crafted well, and a great delight. The performance is quite respectable for a scent of its genre. 3.75/5.

Zegna has two bergamot perfumes now with the addition of Acqua di Bergamotto alongside Italian Bergamot. Both are packaged in identical bottles although the Acqua has not quite the finishing details missing the plastic pedestal of the base that is on the earlier more exclusive bottles. Acqua di Bergamotto is a fresh bergamot scent that is lighter, more lively and has a fresher base than Zegna Italian Bergamot fragrance which predates this one by a few years. Acqua di Bergamotto smells slightly more of an outdoor fun in the sun scent whereas Italian Bergamot is more of a pressed cotton shirt dressed up cleanliness. Zegna is reportedly well stocked with their own proprietary growth of bergamot so the Acqua di Bergamotto is a slightly different direction to capitalize on their beautiful ingredient. I put Italian Berg. on one arm and Acqua dB. on the other and the differences are clear. Italian is greener, a bit heavier and bolder. AdB has bergamot with slight tart influences, possibly grapefruit at opening and following bergamot is neroli for a rounder orange fullness of the lemony sunshine ingredient. Neroli also adds a slight woodiness to the base that is possibly influenced also by the rosemary as well as slight clear cedar note. I like them both about equally but will probably wear Acqua more in summer weather. Acqua di Bergamotto is at least 1/3 the price of the Italian Bergamot and therefore is an outstanding value if you are looking for a summery bergamot. As far as the scent goes I like them both about equally.

The bergamot in the top note (which is reportedly grown and harvested on the Zegna estate in Calabria) is a lovely natural-smelling sharp citrus. This fresh, invigorating blast is beautiful but all too fleeting. In the next (and final) phase, a wonderfully pleasing soapy vetiver takes over - soft and creamy, with a barbershop vibe that remains the same for the duration. Sillage is moderate; projection stays fairly close, finally becoming more of a skin scent; and longevity (on me) is about 4 to 5 hours. It is a skillfully blended fragrance, made with very high quality, natural ingredients – a calming scent that would make a refined and sophisticated choice to wear for dressier outings in the heat of summer.
