Reviews of Copper

On paper Copper opens with an intense striking take on Galbanum, modulated with something obscurely metallic. This opening alone puts it high up in the range of Comme's Puig produced releases, and also amongst the 'anniversary' releases that came out in 2019. This great vegetal abstract start is counterpointed by a tobacco/vanilla/amber structure, fitting well. It marks a departure from the themes played out over many of these more commercially distributed Comme releases. It made me think of Goutal's Sables, with the Immortelle replaced by Galbanum. Sadly on the skin, the fragrance shows a much more dynamic development, where this particular opening moves within 30 minutes into a scenario where tobacco/vanilla/amber takes over, and only a weak stream of the Galbanum remains perceptible. The reference to Jaipur pour Homme mentioned below is quite apt there. In the very late dry down some 10 hours in, the balance between these two strata becomes more equal again, with the Galbanum note, taking momentum once again - alas very faintly and close to the skin. I rank Copper high for its remarkable opening, but the later phases of its development are pretty dull.

CdG never disappoints with their scents that explore "done-before" genres but always with a new twist. Copper seems to be an earthy-gourmand. I can't think of anything similar.

Interesting opening that is both earthy and chocolate/vanilla at the same time. The earthiness is strong and stays around longer than most openings. Later, the drydown is a pleasant vanilla.

Performance is strong with noticeable projection and all-day longevity.

First I got a blast of angelica roots or something like that, then underneath is a woody aspect like Shiseido Basala. Very strong, upfront fragrance, no subtlety at all.

In true CDG fashion, Copper starts off pretty wild, smelling like a mix of clove and cinnamon, but surrounded with ozone and hot electricity. It's also got a sappy, milky thickness to it, which adds to the weirdness. For this opening, it's like someone sprayed Spicebomb in an overheating spaceship.

This doesn't last long, as a mix of tobacco and tonka/coumarin with a shot of pink pepper takes over. This stage is surprisingly pedestrian (thanks to the popularity of Burberry Brit and its clones, the cinnamon/clove/tobacco/pink pepper combination is pretty played out at this point). Given time, the pink pepper and spices mercifully fade, making room for chalky incense to take their place mixing with the tobacco/tonka accord.

In all, I'm feeling a bit "meh" about Copper. While the outer space theatrics are fun, they're short-lived and take place over some rather tired combinations of other notes. If you're really into Spicebomb or Burberry Brit, maybe this could be a fun diversion, but this really isn't for me.
