Reviews of Gucci Guilty Love Edition MMXXI pour Homme

There is one review of Gucci Guilty Love Edition MMXXI pour Homme.
Gucci Guilty Love Edition MMXXI pour Homme (2021) is a perfect example of why so many enthusiasts and hobbyists take shots at the Gucci Guilty pour Homme (2011) line, and I honestly say I can't blame them here. I've been a pretty staunch defender of the Gucci Guilty modus operandi, because even though purpose-made mass-market fragrances meant to smell pleasant and be versatile, dumb-reach compliment-pullers can get really boring really fast, it is what the majority of guys wearing fragrance want these days; and because the total number of people overall wearing fragrance is decreasing due to growing income inequality and social etiquette making it offensive to wear noticeable scent, brands have to cast a wider less-offensive net to catch who's left. Bottom line here is if you're not of the nü-aristocracy that can afford to collect Serge Lutens bell jars willy-nilly, or grab every limited edition Tom Ford Private Collection novelty as it drops, you're probably only wearing one bottle of "cologne" if you even own any at all anymore. Gucci knows that, or more specifically their brand holder Coty Prestige, so they have The Alchemist's Garden for the bourgeois set, and paint-by-numbers crap like the Gucci Guilty line or everyone else. That said, the original few releases were solid if unexciting, wore well, and did something novel at the time of launch in the early to mid 2010's. From there Gucci started taking more risks again and being more adventurous with flankers; but in this bear of a market that just keeps getting worse because Western civilization keeps going further down the shitter, those more-unique flankers flopped, and now we're back to boring again.

The problem with Gucci Guilty Love Edition MMXXI pour Homme isn't really the fact that it's another completely boring, completely safe and samey member of the Gucci Guilty pour Homme range, it's the fact that as the second yearly limited edition flanker in the "Love" series following Gucci Guilty Love Edition (2020), Love Edition MMXXI is so unbelievably on-the-nose boring and samey as if to try reinventing the original pillar. Alberto Morillas isn't a perfumer that outside of his own niche brand Mizensur, is really known to do anything particularly creative anymore, so I expect him to basically crank up the AI and spit out something by-the-numbers for the bean counter clients that hire him. Again, this wouldn't have been so hard to swallow if it was just another Gucci Guilty flanker; but Morillas more or less copies the homework of original Gucci Guilty pour Homme perfumer Jacques Huclier then adds a twist of lavandin to call it "done". The opening is the same sweet citrus and ethyl maltol roundness into a synthetic orange blossom that defines the first fragrance, but then the heart has this musky white floral twist reminiscent of Calvin Klein cK One (1994) - a scent Morillas unsurprisingly worked on - before dosing us with a bit of that cold sharp medicinal lavandin note that designers call "modern lavender" because it's cheap as chips compared to the real stuff. From there, it's the same green patchouli tonka ambroxan mish-mash of the first GG pour Homme, and that's all she wrote. Wear time is average, as is sillage and projection, with best use being year round as a brainless signature for the non-cologne guys who don't care so long as others like it. As a limited collector's flanker though, this really sucks, is completely redundant, and pointless to a T.

Gucci Guilty Love Edition MMXXI pour Homme is really just one step above a limited edition repackaging, like Studs, Diamond, and Platinum Edition bottles of the original, since all it does is just drop a small blink-and-you'll-miss-it twist. The original Love Edition, for all of it's inequities, at least tried to be a modern interpretation of an 80's style aromatic fougère. People took shots at that one for the usual reasons you might suspect; the purists hate any interpretations of older styles done with modern twists because perfumery to them died in 1998 or so anyway, and all the compliment and relevance-obsessed FragBros contrary-wise decry anything with a drop of timelessness as unbearably dated and unsexy. Give me a break. At least there was something interesting going on with ginger and other green notes within the old Love Edition to call it a bastard child of Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels crossed with some Bleu de Chanel (2010), which is close as we'll likely all get to there ever being another Gucci Nobile (1988) again, but otherwise-interesting compromises are never appreciated by absolutists with tribal thinking dictating their tastes. Sales were probably bleak for Love Edition, so Morillas was asked to play things closer to the chest, much much closer, and that's how we ended up with this garbage. Flankers with close ties to the original scent they flank can be good, just like sport editions and the like, but when a limited flanker smells so close to the original you could almost be fooled into thinking it is a rebottling, Gucci is wasting everyone's time and money, including their own. This one is for Gucci Guilty pour Homme collectors only, if those even exist. Thumbs down
