About slpfrsly
My interest in fragrance began at a young age, and through the various rites of fragrant passage - Lynx bodyspray, using older siblings' aftershaves for parties as a teenager, the messy world of overspraying clubbing 'bombs' in early adulthood - my 'goal' was, and perhaps still is, the search for a small collection of personal or 'signature' scents. Scents that would be recognisably 'me'.

My search began properly in the autumn of 2018 after a good decade of dipping in and out of designer releases and some more niche suggestions from the online fragrance world. It has been enjoyable, frustrating, and welcoming in equal measures - talking about fragrances online is usually enjoyable, but sadly not always; buying duds, or getting your hopes dashed due to too much hype; or even people taking this whole exercise of buying, trying, and wearing fragrance all a bit too personally.

I prioritise perfumes based on natural ingredients or natural-esque notes; I like woods and water that have a timeless quality and appeal to them, while also enjoying a range of other categories and styles of fragrance, including orientals and fougeres. I look for scents that are timeless without being dated: appealing without being desperately 'sexy' - at least for the most part. There's always room for one mass pleasing synthetic 'club' scent in my collection. At least for now.

The ultimate 'philosophy' is to buy and wear and love scents until they become 'part of the furniture' and part of 'me' - for myself and others. I am not a collector, never intended to collect perfumes, and am happy with a small selection of scents totalling in single figures (back ups excluded).

Along with taking a measured, fairly systematic approach to sampling by category, house, perfumer, and era, my general 'philosophy' or plan of attack was always to find something I love, and to then wear it until I find something I prefer - a game of fragrance top trumps, in a way. This replacement system often impacts on the collection as a whole, as I've generally tried to keep some consistency - and minor overlaps - between each perfume in my collection; whether that be by house, era, notes and olfactive categories etc. Whenever I find something I prefer, it often means a significant portion had to go as the connections that bind said collection together are weakened through the 'one' replacement. This approach has been tricky, but it's also made me focus and be honest about myself about what I really want and, also, what suits me: what I 'need' as much as what I want.

It was never my goal to find 'the best' smelling or the most 'artistic' perfume - always to find something that resonates with me; my life, my past, my overall 'self' as it is now and for the future. I personally believe it is a forlorn pursuit to search for 'the best' and one that I'm not sure I could control without spiralling off in to the world of owning/collecting hundreds of perfumes in the process (I have no doubt perfume can be an utterly addictive 'hobby') - there are more complex and more rewarding areas to plunge into in the pursuit of perfection: like making perfume, perhaps? Alas, that's not for me.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and whatever brought you to this bio, I hope I've entertained or informed or at least helped you pass some time enjoyably.
