One thing I just noticed: Professor Value's vintage made in U.S.A. EdT pictured above says 83% on the box, while the vintage made in U.K. EdT boxes I've seen read 82%.
So it appears Red for Men...
The fact that it says "UTIF" seems to point to an initial edition (as "UTIF" was shortened to "UTF" very early on in the Nineties, apparently at some point during 1990).
Congrats! Furyo is potent stuff - my 30 ml will last me a while.
I've seen Red for Men boxes with UTIF written on it. Red for Men was launched only in 1991. Of course, the boxes could have been designed already in 1990 but anyway, this makes me think UTIF...
I'm inclined to think this must be so, because I've seen a box labeled "Eau de Toilette" but with a bottle inside that reads "Cologne Spray", not EdT!
Anyone seen a box that actually mentions...
Giorgio Beverly Hills V.I.P.
150936
Could be.
Reading some of the descriptions here sounds like we're smelling a different fragrance. I've got plenty of classics as cheapie reformulations and Red does well among that lot and...
My 2019 bottle smells great and, while inevitably different due to reformulation and age difference, it's close to the late 80's vintage. Actually, I like wearing the newer one more because the...
From what I'm seeing, the spray version that says "NATURAL SPRAY" under "EAU DE TOILETTE" on front of the box is vintage? While the relaunch reads "EAU DE TOILETTE SPRAY" (all written on the same...
Salvador Dali pour Homme.
First full wear after receiving this blind buy. Lovely! So happy I took the risk.
Thanks! :coolold:
The Furyo and V.I.P. are just 30ml sprays, but will last me a while given my spraying habits - and all the other stuff to "spray through" in this lifetime!
I think it's potent enough with decent longevity (although I have to admit longevity is very rarely an issue for me). My main issue is the atomizer, which is easily the worst I have ever encountered....
Probably still had some oakmoss in it? The current one is devoid of it altogether and the base of course lacks heft accordingly. Although to my nose, it doesn't smell hollow exactly, thanks to the...
So I received my blind bought Salvador Dali pH (1st vintage) yesterday. Thanks everyone for your input!
I'm wearing this now and I really like it! Even though not smelling too similar, I can't...
Lucky me, I don't get anything fecal, nauseating or unpleasant from my bottle. If I did, I probably wouldn't be considering the vintage.
First time I decanted from a splash bottle, I tried using a mini funnel, decanting from my vintage Polo into a 2 ml atomizer. Oops! I guess closer to 10 ml was used and wife complained of the "awful...
I'm really enjoying the current Red! And even more so than V.I.P. (vintage obviously) or current Giorgio for Men.
Vintage Red costs five times as much. I'm sort of tempted but, hmm, here's the...
I have found that what many describe as "chemical", "synthetic" and "harsh" is an effect I often happen to enjoy. Like a slap on the face in the opening that initially makes you go "whoah, what the...
I decided to give Giorgio Beverly Hills Red for Men its first full wearing, because on my quick sampling yesterday I got a surprising and very good tobacco/cigarette accord. Lo and behold, I'm not...
Giorgio Beverly Hills Red of Men
Bogart Furyo
Giorgio Beverly Hills V.I.P. Special Reserve
Salvador Dali pour Homme
First impressions of blind bought stuff I received yesterday and today:
Giorgio Beverly Hills V.I.P. Special Reserve - surprisingly close to (current) Giorgio for Men, more so than I expected. By...
You mean learning to analyze fragrances? In my opinion, no - "deeper understanding" is in no way a prerequisite for personal enjoyment, be it fragrances, music, literature, movies or whatever. From...
A nice idea!
But... I just throw mine away.
Absolu (although very sweet).
Given that fragrance is a mixture of various chemicals, a "chemical smell" is the inevitable end result to the nose. Just like synthetics will inevitably make a scent smell "synthetic" by definition...
Bleue, by a mile.
I could care less, as long as it smells good.
"U.T.I.F." points to pre-90s.
Knize Ten +2
For masculine rose, Cartier Declaration d'un Soir and Etro ManRose. (Amouage Lyric Man I find too feminine and bright.)
Yes, definitely. I love the pungent and aromatic blast of the opening. I can understand why some think it's harsh and "synthetic". Well, that kind of vibe happens to be right up my alley!
Current GIT = current Aspen
Vintage Paco Rabanne pour Homme = Great Jones
It's good stuff - from what I remember spraying on paper strips.
The real gem to me is L'Eau Bleue d'Issey though.
I guess with plumbing tape, even though the cap could still be tightened some more, it's actually sealed already?
I'm obviously overthinking this, but with the tape in place it seems trickier to...
Capucci pour Homme vintage on left hand, current formulation on the right. Yet another case of "minimal difference".
Right now I'm testing side by side Capucci pH vintage (smooth cap) and current (?) Extraordinary Fragrances formulation (oakmoss listed on the box).
To my nose, these are remarkably close, though...
How about "churchy" smelling fragrances? Isn't it a biased and loaded term, with its presupposed link to Christianity, even though "church" is a central concept in, say, Scientology too?
I have a few vintage splash bottles, from which I decant with a pipette into 2 ml atomizers. I use teflon tape to seal both the atomizer and splash bottle to minimize evaporation. I only wrap a...
In my experience price point has little to do with enjoyability or lack thereof. Some of my most memorable experiences have been with cheapies. I did have a brief "niche snob" phase though.
Sex Appeal. :coolold:
Because cheap price surprisingly often does not equal "cheap smell" (how ever that elusive term is defined).
Who knows, maybe "Middle Eastern" and "Far Eastern" will be considered offensive in the future, because they imply a European vantage point, where Europe is the presupposed "center".
I think they are well blended in and balanced, at least in the current version (and I would suspect vintage too). FWIW, I tend to dislike modern sweet tobaccos, such as Pure Havane or Insurrection II...
Maybe? And why why stop there when:
"Animalic" = disrespectful of the animals that have had to suffer for the sake of perfumery?
"Men's" vs. "women's fragrances" = sexist and artificial?

YSL Jazz
Happy for Men
Armani Code Sport
All of them just as enjoyable now as they were three, two and one decades ago.
Polo Green
+31 bottles
+1 mini
Once again, I'm planning to stop "for now".
The new one is an excellent piercingly aromatic blast to the nose. No doubt the vintage is even better.
Zino.
This is the first time I'm trying this. Surprisingly, I get an animalic vibe, which I didn't expect and it makes me think of Givenchy Gentleman. There's also a floral aspect reminiscent of...
Amouage Memoir Man has gone from irritatingly cloying to deliciously chocolate-y between two wearings (with equal amount of sprays and points of application). Epic Man has "changed" too. Different...
Wings for Men
Red for Men
Lagerfeld Classic
Rochas Moustache Original 1949
Eau de Rochas Homme
Interesting! I usually spray Memoir only once or twice max and need to direct it below chest level to avoid getting overwhelmed.
Yes, this! Completely forgot about SMN. Nostalgia, Patchouli & Peau d'Espagne, at the very least.
Do you remember from what year your last bottle before the 2019 one was?
Just a random thought: My approach with these reformulated classics is that I don't even expect to get the mossy density...
I've smelled current pour Monsieur on a paper strip once and remember liking it. Furthermore, I love Capucci pH and Boucheron pH EdT, so I figured the Givenchy would be a reasonably safe blind buy....
Fate Man
Manages to keep the usual oriental opulence in check. And smells fantastic, of course. I also own and love Memoir Man (can get semi-cloying although usually does not) and Epic Man (maybe...
There was recently a Fragrantica article on Lapidus pour Homme by Miguel Matos. I just spotted this in the comment section: "I had an original formula flacon of Lapidus with the 85% vol. on the...
You mean Lapidus switched from 82% to 85% and then back to 82% with the reformulations? I have seen a 82% version with "UTIF" written on the box, which would mean it predates 1990. Based on that, the...
I've never sniffed a Frederic Malle in my life. I feel Portrait of a Lady at least would be worth sampling. Svensk Parfum, Lubin and Rogue Perfumery also spring to mind. Zero experience with any of...
I don't follow current releases closely, so I can't say if there's been a trend towards linearity. Safe and uninspiring in the designer realm, yes. Linear? Can't say from casual paper strip testing....
Yeah, I remember reading something about "Originale" possibly being an European exclusive. And I have no idea if there's been yet another reformulation since 2019. I guess it's entirely possible with...
The '74 version, currently labeled "Eau de Toilette Originale" (at least in Europe), is reportedly closer to the vintage than earlier non-"Originale" reformulations.
But even the 2018 released...
All blind buys, all vintages:
Monsieur de Givenchy
Salvador Dali pour Homme
Giorgio for Men V.I.P. Special Reserve
Bogart Furyo
Davidoff Zino (mini)
In random order:
Amouage Fate Man
Ted Lapidus Lapidus pour Homme
Nishane Unutamam
Etro Palais Jamais
Jaguar for Men
Funny how much the top 5 can change from day to day
Cool!
I'm waiting for mine to be delivered - a blind buy motivated by the current "regular" Giorgio for Men (which I like a lot).
Eau de Rochas pour Homme
I'm thinking of grabbing the current formulation to compare and to layer with the vintage, because the top notes seem quite subdued. Later on, not a lot of projection...
Looks like the 2nd edition to me!
Too many factors to say for sure in any generalized fashion. If your nose detects it, it projects at least that far (based on your personal detection threshold). If you don't smell it, it doesn't...
Private Label was nice indeed. Although there was an accord/quality in it that vaguely reminded me of a certain home-made alcoholic beverage (and it didn't feel like it was because of a sample gone...
Just my personal take on it, of course - and I'm a musician too, btw! :coolold:
Not to derail this thread too much, but you could also say the emotional state - maybe even blood sugar level and...
Agua Brava - with a twist! :lolk:
Mit freundlicher Empfehlung - Atmos Arzneimittel
Mucolytisches Expectorans - Broncho-Sekretolyticum
Funny stuff! Pure joy like seeing Jovan Sex...
Just wanted to add this informative thread: https://www.basenotes.net/threads/302112-Has-anyone-tried-vintage-Lapidus-Pour-Homme-(1987)
To distinguish the "deep vintage" Lapidus pour Homme, here's...
The current Lapidus pH is 82%.
Sung Homme. I enjoy this reformulated and blind bought cheapie classic - and I also like the fact that price point doesn't dictate the level of personal enjoyment for me.
I guess it also depends on the criteria/pickiness of each person.
When wearing fragrances as I normally do (under the shirt, on the chest), the differences are not as pronounced compared to...
I assume this was with the current Kouros? I find it to perform very well too, and while not having done side by side tests with a vintage (only going by memory), I think Kouros still has got some...
Lapidus pour Homme, original 85% formulation. 30 ml will last me a while, because one spray is pretty much all that's needed.
The vintage is wonderful indeed, but - as almost invariably turns out...
A very good one, in both vintage and current formulation.
I'm a big fan of Palais Jamais. Not much talked about. I love it as much as ManRose, another great and even less talked about Etro...
Pierre Cardin pour Monsieur (vintage) - civilized and gentlemanly, the kind of non-candy sweet I like, drydown smooth as ****. Another successful blind buy.
+26 bottles
+1 mini
Thanks!
Thank you - that Furyo of yours is looking awesome too! Speaking of which, a 30 ml Furyo is currently on its way to me. Another blind buy! How are you liking it?
Never really happened to the extent of having to rush to the bathroom to scrub off a scent, but when sampling Yatagan, I didn't want to leave it reeking on the back of my hand so I opted to wash it...
Sung Homme. Cheap blind buy.
I was expecting a boring and generic scent (and of course, "butchered by reformulation" lol) but to my surprise this opens with an exhilarating aromatic blast. Strong...
Pierre Cardin pour Monsieur EdT (Made in France, late 80's probably). Smells great. As for similarities with Sex Appeal, yes there are some, but both have their own character and as such it's not...
Blind buy. Made in France and reads "UTIF" on bottle and box, which indicates pre-90's.
I got this yesterday, have worn it twice now and what can I say, a fantastic and comforting scent! Not a...
Yeah, despite having no experience with the vintage, it's easy too see/smell what you mean by current Antaeus being "tweaked to be modern". The castoreum indeed is just an approximation of it.
A good one! In vintage as well as current form.
Only owning the current Originale, I'd like to sniff the vintage GG to see if there's more civet. I wouldn't mind if there was more of it, to give it a little more bite. As for depth and warmth, I...
After wearing Polo Green vintage a couple of times now, I find significant overlap with Fou d'Absinthe. But while Fou d'Absinthe is like a bland "modernized take" on it, Polo is far from boring or...
Agreed. Smelling of anything "artificial" may be considered "overspraying" in certain surroundings, if the cultural ideal is to "smell clean" (i.e., to not smell at all).
Mine was boxed, as well as unused (judging by the air bubbles in the sprayer tube). The top notes in mine are definitely not as citrusy as reviews say. It's quite dense, vaguely "berry jam" like and...
In the current Antaeus, I only get a fleeting and occasional castoreum note. I'd love it if there was more of that growl, as the (too pleasant) florals seem to overwhelm it before the scent...
Well, it would be not THAT far-fetched if a certain country is overwhelmed and all the vintage sellers in the hospital!
Anyway, I'm reasonably happy with the current iteration. It's...
2nd formulation Paco Rabanne pour Homme.
This is surprisingly close to Bond No. 9 Great Jones (to be fair, I should phrase it the other way around of course). I have read about the resemblance...
Quite tempted to seek this version out. The earliest "pour Homme" I just bought is good but not as fresh-citrusy as I expected (it's quite aromatic and resinous piney, which is not a negative of...
Traditionally mossy, less soapy and "loud" than current. The sprayer design feels like an afterthought though: after a few sprays a trickle of the juice was running down the side of the bottle.
...
Interesting! I only started buying vintages last year, so I had no idea that the pandemic would have an impact on the supply.
