Here is my full review of Criminal Elements - Reuben (Chypre-Oriental) which I just posted to Basenotes review section if anyone is interested...

  2. Re: Has anyone tried the Australian indie/niche house Criminal Elements?

I suppose to be fair, given that synthetic oakmoss accords are often fairly unsatisfactory, aside from the occasional house that seems to have a secret recipe so to speak, it does make sense to...
  3. Re: Has anyone tried the Australian indie/niche house Criminal Elements?

Still that oud, amber, and oak moss base is really nice, full, rich, and dark - as you say MM.
  4. Re: Has anyone tried the Australian indie/niche house Criminal Elements?

Yes, most definitely. I think being somewhat of a Chypre fan, I am still holding out hope for more explicit Chypre element to emerge in the base with the oak moss haha. Maybe they should just give up...
  5. Re: Has anyone tried the Australian indie/niche house Criminal Elements?

After paying more attention to the opening after a reapplication I definitely get a clear Chypre references with the citrus and lavender there. Interested to see of the oak moss comes through more in...
  6. Has anyone tried the Australian indie/niche house Criminal Elements?

Has anyone tried any of the offerings from the Australian indie/niche house Criminal Elements?

I am wearing a sample of their 'men's chypre' Ruben today which plays on traditional chypre structure...

Oh sure, one assumes they use some kind of synthetic castoreum if it’s still present.

Ahhh yeh Slayerized there are a few good accounts in the thread you posted, I will admit.

So do people think there is now little to now castoreum in the current version? Is that general consensus?

    Re: Best mens floral fragrance?

Big Aramis 900 fan here. Wore it last night — Bernard Chant's beautifully rose/patchouli in a 'nominally masculine,' as PStoller puts it, Floral/Woody Chypre — costs approx 20 USD. Great stuff for...

Thanks everyone. Goldwine and Bavard your comments were particularly helpful.
  15. Re: Rose Fragrance - most true to scent, best staying power, etc.

I need to try declaration d’Un Soir, heard good things. I’ve been wearing Aramis 900 as a slightly dressed up spring, going in summer, evening fragrance of late.

Re: Build the ULTIMATE menís wardrobe!

    12 bottles of Fahrenheit.
  19. Re: Rose Fragrance - most true to scent, best staying power, etc.

A good very inexpensive option is Aramis 900 - a floral Chypre - which has a very beautiful prominent rose note. The perfumer Bernard Chant was well known for his rose accord among other things.

  24. Re: Musings on 'classics,' and niche vs designer...

Sure, I mean I think say something that smells 'synthetic' is fine if that is pat of the overall aesthetic dimension of the composition. Something like CdG/Mark Buxton's 2 Man with its central 'white...
  25. Re: Musings on 'classics,' and niche vs designer...

This strikes me as an important point in that correlating natural/synthetic ingreidents onto quality/inferior ingredients is obviously reductive. While at the same time acknowledging of course that...
  26. Re: Musings on 'classics,' and niche vs designer...

Oh yes I follow you. I have sampled perfumes from Bortnikoff, Bogue, and Tauer etc... all great stuff.

So is 'artisanal' a commonly used distinction in this sense?
  27. Re: Musings on 'classics,' and niche vs designer...

Yes I mean, I do too, I would say I only wear a couple of designer scents from post 2000 personally — in Dior Homme and Encre Noire/Extreme — otherwise it's all niche and classics.
  28. Re: Musings on 'classics,' and niche vs designer...

I think there is an interesting point here Goldwine, for example I have noticed that a lot of the celebrated classics are very carefully composed, and often use a given compositional form or style...
