Mixing fragrance oils and essential oils

Hi...I'd like to add a a few drops of musk perfume oil or fragrance oil to some essential oils. Do you know if the amount of the musk should be about the same amount, on the average, as each of the other essential oils? I suppose the strength of fragrance oils varies from company to company, but I'm just looking for a rough estimate on proportions. I also understand fragrance oils don't always mix well with essential oils, so periodic shaking of the finished product may be required.

The musk you would be adding is dependent on the scent you wish to achieve. You should see fragrant and essential oils as interchangeable, rather than two separate things.

Most FOs and EOs mix well. Rather than shaking the final product, warm the bottle between your hands and just gently roll it on a table or tipping it up-side-down. With all perfumes, definitely leave it in a cool, shaded area for a week for all the initial scents to blend before tweaking it again.

Hi ...Your question is a good one. The problem lies in exactly WHAT Musk you are thinking about using. Musks lie everywhere from naturally sourced animal Tonquin Musk, to the various chemical Musks known as "Nitro Musks" ( of which generally Musk ketone is one of the only ones still commonly used as there are alleged health risks associated with Musk Ambrette etc.)to the various synthetic Musk Compounds, to Musk fragrance oil ( which, depending on the producer can be just about anything!) to things like Ambrette Seed absolute (The last one is a naturally sourced material that has nothing to do with Musk Ambrette).

All of this is a long winded way of saying that the choice of Musk ingredient(s) will dictate it's % by two factors: Desired olfactory potency, and maximum safe skin contact levels.

Myself I have only used e.o.'s but for people wanting to mix fragrance oils & e.o.'s one could try mixing small trial amounts and see how that goes. For fragrance oils see that you do use skin safe oils. There are a lot of fragrance oils out there which allthough they are nice in scent are only meant for use in home fragrance, oil burners , potpourri etc.

Mixing fragrance and essential oils shouldn't be a problem as long as the oils or absolutes have not been diluted in something like Jojoba oil or another carrier oil. That's often the case with oils intended for Aromatherapy massage. Some fragrance oils are only for use in burners or room scent and not at all suitable.
Best to buy from reputable suppliers where the product and suitable usage is clearly explained and understood.

It entirely depends on why you should want to do this.

For a perfume formula or serious perfumery learning - then just don't bother for many reasons. Type the question in the search box and read the many threads already here and see all the existing answers. I'm fairly sure there is another current thread on this very subject. If I find it, I will add a link.

For curiosity and your own playful fun for no further reproduction - why not? Try and see.

I would never even think about mixing expensive real essential oils with fake fragrance oils that have unknown toxins for their ingredients. Why not use all real oils instead

Because one can't get real musk oil legally, nor is it kind anyway One is obliged these days to use artificial musk oils of which the blends give a better reproduction of musk than single aroma-chemicals do.

It would be nice if there was an apple or maybe strawberry essential oil too, but, there's none, so, for me, rather then go with a potentially toxic replica, I'll simply stick with the natural oils that we do have, and as much as I love those other scents, like musk, I have a new Sandalwood Absolute that's pretty close to a Musk scent. I got it at Eden Botanicals. Very dark and earthy.

Now I politely suggest you do a lot of reading before slapping around pure opinions on others using potential toxic replicas and the like. Most people on here have put in a lot of homework to get where they are. They have read all the arguments pro and against naturals and have formed their own opinions on where they wish to be within this framework. They already have knowledge of what is and isn't toxic and have a right to choose what they use. Some are industry professionals who have had years of experience and offer their help and advice on this forum for nothing. Your opinion has every reason to be valid for yourself but others have the same rights to choose for themselves.

There are plenty of kind and nice people on this forum and there is plenty of room for everyone of all tendencies.

And, because their still unknown, and they are 90% petroleum based. Now, please don't shoot the messenger here. I'm simply stating what little is known about these oils. As we all know by now, the real oils do not contain additives, or toxic compounds. Fragrance, man made oils do. Now, I'm not saying that to piss you or anyone else off, but it's true, and if people choose to use them, fine, it's their right. I choose not to, and simply wish the makers of these oils would reveal to the world, everything they have in them, and let the people be the judge if they want them on their skin and in their blood streams. It's my opinion, and my choice, nothing more. I'll be more then happy to show you what one of the main oil dealers, Perfumers Apprentice, says about using synthetics for perfume. I'll post it if you like.

David, would you trust the people at Perfumers Apprentice if they made that statement? Well, they did. If you look under fragrances, it's right there on page one. Now, you can use whatever you wish to use, and put whatever foeign, toxic, substance you want in your bloodstream and lungs, that's your choice, but these comments are not mine, but by one of the most reputable distributers of oils in the country. I'll post the entire statemnt for you. Then thats it, I've moved onto other discussions. Done with this one. It's all a personal choice, like everything else.

There are two reasons, however, that professional perfumers do not use Fragrance Oils.
1. Because they are pre-diluted by the manufacturer.

2. Because they are of unknown composition, with the manufacturer not bound to continue making the same product the same way. For example, "Amber" is a recipe for a certain type of fragrance, usually made with a blend of Peru Balsam, Benzoin, Jasmine, and one or more Musk aromachemicals; but an "Amber" produced by one company will not be the same as the Amber produced by a different company, and any company can change their formula at any time.
How can you market a perfume with Amber as an ingredient if you don't know that you will be able to get the same Amber consistently?

I'm answering the mans question. Is that ok with you? He asked me to show him where I found that information, so I did. I am done with this discussion and I have moved on. Professional Perfumer's use bases supplied by other houses, and very often they do not know the formula of the base. Providing the supplier has a valid MSDS, providing the base obeys whatever regulations are required, and providing the quality of the base is consistent, it is not necessary to know the formula. This is not a big deal. I don't know the chemical composition of every Essential oil I used either. I may know 99.0% of it, but not the complete composition; so what? This is the last time I shall bother replying to you "Robspace"; you seem obsessed with "purity" and unable to listen to anyone else's point of view, and as a result of that obsession any further discussion becomes pointless.
