the_good_life, I use your discussion of Creed and 4711 all the time whenever people start talking about the fake histories of 4711, D'Orsay and Creed. Granted hype and fluff are a part of perfume advertising, and there is no need to conjure up a false lineage of noble patrons and founders.

the_good_life, keep up the great work on the history.

I like a little romance in the advertising, like the silliness of some Guerlain ads (like the fanciful tale around Jicky, and the poetry about the inspiration of Chamade).

This is NOT, however, like stating you have been making perfumes since the 18th century, ignoring that most of your business was bespoke clothing for wealthy and noble patrons, holding out out a faux Prince of Wales coat of arms, or conjuring up a company in 1908 and having the nerve to print "1830" on your perfume boxes.

Guerlain has a real lineage and does not have to make up claims to noble patrons.

They can concentrate of the imagery of twilight (L'Heure Bleue), the beating of a heart in love (Chamade), or the red colour of the traditional hunting coat (Habit Rouge).
