    Great article G!!!

Wonder how they'll survive commercialism that's bound to hit them in the future...

    Doesn't look good, does it?
Next time I visit India, I'm definitely going to explore its perfumes and oils properly. As you say, who knows how long this kind of industry will last?

Interesting reading. Brings back memories of my India travels in the late 70s. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting article. Never knew about UP- always thought Hyderabad had a long, traditional attar industry. Thanks for sharing!

    Very cool, thanks for sharing!
I'm using mitti attar in a perfume for my daughter, who spent a semester in India. I let her smell the base notes, and she said "It smells like India! How did you do that, how did you know what India smells like?" Well, I don't, but I figured I couldn't go wrong if I put a little bit of India into it. Guess that worked.

UP has always been the focal point for attars in India. Hyderabad sells more compared to other locations imho.

I'll visit only Kannauj, as mentioned in the article , if you are looking for authentic & quality stuff.

Probably it has been asked before but, do you know trustable indian attar sellers? (apart from White Lotus, John Steele and Scents of Earth)

It is indeed unique - people who lived in India or visited & had a chance monsoon shower hit them could have experienced it. People in other arid tropical / sub-tropical countries would have this experience too. We call it "Mann vaasanai" in Tamil language / loosely translated as the scent of the sand / mud (Mann is sand / mud & vaasanai is smell). I've never smelt mitti attar, so unless I smell it, I wouldn't be able to pass judgement on how close it is to the actual feel.
