Default Tried my first Montale today dark aoud my god....

Never have i smelled something so bad in all my life.
An abomination. Never since i started buying fragrances 18 years ago have i had such a negative reaction towards a scent.
How to describe it?? A chemical weapon that isis could use?? Never have i smelled something so chemically synthetic and strong.
Who could wear this without clearing a room??
Hell you could clear the whole street wearing this!!
I washed my arm 3 times and it still wouldn't go away.
My god has the ifra smelled this????

I bought a decant a while back and sprayed it once. That was two years ago. Maybe I should try it again but I remember sharing a similar experience.

Haha if you've never tried a Montale oud before, I can understand that reaction. It's basically their medicinal/rubbery oud and sandalwood all the way. I like it a lot, but most people don't enjoy when I wear it.

Happen to love Dark Aoud also but I can understand how for some it can be repulsive and to others an acquired taste.

    Same here!

    I know, great isn't it?
Smells like a cyborg apocalypse. This is the scent that Skynet would wear once the singularity is achieved. It also has a rather lovely sandalwood accord in the base, or at least it did in its previous formulation.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

    That just made my day

You're right about the sandalwood too IMO. It's basically Montale's synthetic oud on top (for a while) then a nice mix of that and the sandalwood base. My current bottle is from 2011 and I have one arriving shortly in the mail that might be newer...so hopefully it hasn't changed too much.

Like the ones before me, I really enjoy Dark Aoud. Seeing what a chemist can do, I now appreciate Chemistry much more than when I was in high school

Haha. Great analogy. Totally love this scent and always said that it had a motor oil like quality to it, but I think I may use your description from now on.

Definitely due in part of the synthetic oud. This one is so unnatural, it seems like it would fit right into the Le Labo lineup.

personally, i'm willing to put up with the opening and wait it out because the drydown is rather nice
like someone who as a teenager and a young adult was an obnoxious drunken lout
but upon maturity somehow turned into a fine individual

I've smelled and own a couple of synthetic ouds, and while you can smell them in Dark Aoud, I feel the primary culprit for this quality is definitely Norlimbanol.

I pick up on the Norlimbanol as well, but I get a ton of Black Agar Givco or something very much like it.

One of the worst of the elusive Pierre Montale's many nauseating mixtures (IMHO).
    Number of sprays N = {(6-L)x(7-P)}/2 (where L = longevity and P = projection, on a scale of 1-5).

Never smelled anything from this house and was not planning to but you guys got me interested. Maybe have to get a sample of this some day.

Pretty sure I will hate it but seems like I have to experience this.

Except for a couple of the non-aouds I don't get along with this house at all. Definitely a taste that I don't really want to acquire.

I love Dark Aoud! Yes it's a strange one, and an acquired taste but it's fantastic.
