It is one of the greatest perfumes ever created.... Far from a "stink monster". It is a very strong powerhouse composition that does not need tons of sprays to get the job done, however. As for which version is better...? There is plenty of information on this site available through the search function, but any bottle released without the tree moss listed in the ingredients list (the unfortunate current stuff does have the tree moss) should be just fine. You want the one only listing oak moss without the tree moss on the box. The juice color should be mossy green (not light green like the current reformulated juice).
    Current Top Ten:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Jasmin Antique (Rogue Perfumery)

    3) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    3) Giorgio V.I.P. Special Reserve (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie

    5) Dia pour Homme vintage edt (Amouage)

    6) Nombre Noir (Shiseido)
    7) Lucifer (Renaissance Fragrances)
    8) Polo vintage (Ralph Lauren)
    9) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy)
    10)Javanese Patchouli (Zegna)

Currently wearing: Nombre Noir by Shiseido

Still pleased even with the longevity and projection of the current, most likely reformulated lighter green-yellowish juice

Yep, that is definitely the reformulated stuff. Longevity and projection are just fine with the current stuff. The problem is the dry down is now far inferior to the original (and even pre-reformulated re-release) bottles.

    Both are good.
For those of us who understand the Magic of Oakmoss. Vintage is far superior.
A draw or sample of both is recommended.

Agree with everyone. drseid knows this scent like I know the back of my hand I sought out a vintage bottle after reading his accounts and love for this fragrance. If you seek out the older versions, you won't be disappointed. Better yet, it's very reasonably priced and one of the best bangs for the buck out there.
I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.

I have the 1984 original splash bottle and the most recent reformulated bottle. To my surprise the recent release still smells monster but isn't as smooth, rich and note as balanced as the original. the juice screams 80's once it's out of the bottle, it's incredibly delicious you can't stop sniffing yourself.

Has anyone had the chance to compare the oakmoss only and the recent oakmoss-treemoss (Made in Spain) reformulations?

I'm asking because the Made in Spain (which I own) is supposedly inferior. But comparing it to my Giorgio V.I.P., it stacks up very well and doesn't smell nasty or cheap. In fact, I prefer the Made in Spain Giorgio for Men over V.I.P. So... I'm a little perplexed. I paid about ten euros for it new.
    Spray less, love more.

The current versions I have from EA (Elizabeth Arden) fragrances and made on Spain smell as spectacular as always.
Very strong smooth and fulfilling. In the ingredients both tree and oak moss are
listed. The dry down is very satisfying.

I agree. I think it's great all the way through. No discernible quality difference compared to my vintage Giorgio V.I.P. and Red for Men. Actually, reformulated Red for Men is a good one too, with minimal difference to the vintage (although some say they are sensitive to a nasty aromachemical in current Red; luckily, I'm not).
    Spray less, love more.

I love mine -- it's probably the most warm and sensual cologne I own.
It's a 50ml splash bottle which I believe is a vintage (never tried any other version so I can't be sure).
Bought it from rgsellingassistant on eBay for a measly $24!
This is my Opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I'd probably buy the vintage too but currently only a few are available on eBay in Europe. 70 euros shipped for a 30 ml spray is too much though (not comfortable with buying a splash) - especially considering I enjoy the current.

Current version also does not have Lyral (Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde) https://www.basenotes.net/threads/457195-Lyral

Comparing the Cologne Spray 1st edition and the 2019 version, I can only tell them apart when "focusing on it" or sniffing up close. The vintage is better, yes. In normal wearing though (sprayed on the chest), I enjoy both equally. There is an accord in the current that is not very pleasant and feels unnatural - but for me it remains buried deep in the composition. No doubt, anyone more sensitive to it might feel repulsed.
    Spray less, love more.

I purchased my bottle years ago and didn't keep the box, how can I know which version it is ? Made in USA by EA Fragrances, batch# 8CA5. I am not confident with my visual evaluation of the juice color , green-yellowish or yellow- greenish ... I forgot to say : it smells very good

Years ago? Probably 2008 then. The first number appears to denote the year (in the Made in Spain versions it's even clearer, batch codes starting with "Y" as in year).

    Yes, 2008 makes sense.

FWIW the label on my 50ml splash bottle says Giorgio Beverly Hills made in France batch code S2EA.
The glass on the bottle is stamped Made in France also. No reference to EA anywhere.
No idea what year it was made but it smells wonderful !
