Default I'm coming around on Chanel Egoiste

    Hey all,

I currently own Chanel Pour Monsieur and Platinum Egoiste fragrances. My nose was behaving itself last night and I was able to take in a large number of fragrances without going scent blind. It was my best night of fragrance evaluation EVER.

So, like before, the initial spray of Egoiste was 'sharp' and just wasn't my thing. I didn't even think it was 'nice'. I started using my new counter technique of the "20-minute dry down". I asked the employees to please NOT remove/dispose of my scent-spritzed tester cards and leave them on the counter even if I walk away for a while. This gives me the ability to come back and smell the drydowns in an organized succession when they are less potent on my nose.

I had the Chanel lineup to evaluate:
    Allure
    Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme
    Bleu de Chanel
    Egoiste

When I came back after 20 minutes, I smelled each again and when I smelled Egoiste.......WHAT SORCERY IS THIS????......it was very, very different. Gone was that sharp-odd-bland-citrus-bite and instead I got this smooth tobacco and classy-fresh smell. I think it put Bleu de Chanel to shame. How can most people at these counters not think Egoiste is one of the stars of Chanel's lineup? How is Bleu de Chanel so much more popular? I think the answer is in the initial opening where most people will NOT smell what Egoiste REALLY is like. I'm now likely going to be looking to test Egoiste more extensively and it is on the way towards being a 'buy' for me. Again, I need further testing before pulling the trigger, but this one seems like it will be a part of my collection.

Chanel was already the 2nd best house only to Creed in my book and now if Egoiste passes further evaluation, it will only solidify Chanel in my mind as the best designer fragrance house and 2nd best overall (based on the number of nose-pleasing fragrances by percentage of their lineup).

Always liked and still enjoying to this day the masculine rose-sandalwood harmonies (not easily but the more successfully and craftily) rendered in this one

I'm not too big on Chanel, but they have some great stuff. The Les Exclusifs, the women's range, and Antaeus and Egoiste. I just don't care for any masculine Chanel fragrance apart from Antaeus, Egoiste, and Pour Monsieur.

Since you like your bay rums, have you tried Havana (Aramis) and Cuba (Czech & Speake)? You need to try those two - you might find them interesting.

Was my SotD just the other day. Love it all the way through. I don't really get anything I would consider "sharp" however. But glad you really are enjoying the drydown - an amazing scent for sure. When I wore it the other day I realized that I just don't wear it nearly enough.

Egoiste does seem to cast its own intoxicating spell. Love it.

I thought the opening of the current version of Egoitse was the best part, only rivaled by the mid and the base.

OP the other Chanels you mentioned in your post aren't even close to the legend that is Egoiste.

I went through the exact feeling as you did, only I took over a year to realize how good Egoiste is. Tried it out first time and went "ugh, why do people even like this?" and never bothered with it again. I got a sample of it a few months back from a purchase I made (vintage sample), and I absolutely loved it. It's almost to a point where I consider it to be a signature scent right now.

Odors have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will. The persuasive power of an odor cannot be fended off, it enters into us like breath into our lungs, it fills us up, imbues us totally. There is no remedy for it...

I sometimes wonder what BN would be like if everyone used my technique to get to the drydown quickly!

Unfortunately I loathe the sour note in it. Becomes it unwearable to me.

So you are not a reader of my blog? LOL. You spray to the chest after taking a deep breath, then blow on that area (or I guess you could use a hair dryer), but you leave the room before you breathe in again. The idea is to avoid as much of the top notes as possible, so you could also try other things, like doing my technique and also breathing through the mouth for a couple minutes.

tspencer, I'm impressed with your abilities to discern something from sprays on paper. I can't smell much and get confused / overwhelmed almost immediately.

I went from not caring for it at the store to "what the heck is this on my arms that I need to get immediately!?!?" I bought a bottle the next day.

This is the third thread in the last few months on this. About a month ago in Nordstroms I tried this agsin and sorely disappointed. I just find these "classics" have a very dated smell and this started 5 min in and wouldn't let up. I love PE, nothing like E, but unfortunately could not get past some of the notes. Not surprised though as I get this from many old school scents
