Default NEW: Michael Kors - Extreme Speed!

Extreme Speed by Michael Kors is a Woody Spicy fragrance for men.

    This is a new fragrance.

Extreme Speed was launched in 2018.

Top notes are cardamom, cypress and sage

Middle notes are cinnamon and violet

Base notes are cedar, patchouli and tolu balsam.

Michael Kors isn't exactly a name that screams "quality" to fragrance enthusiasts. It's one of the houses in the Estée Lauder stable that seems to have received the least investment, and new releases from the house turn up at discounters without much delay.

However, there are interesting goings on at Estée Lauder these days, and good fragrances seem to be creeping in in unexpected places (consider the surprising revival of Aramis in recent years, and then there's the bewilderingly bold MAC Shadescents line). So when I heard Extreme Speed was unexpectedly good, I wanted to give it a sniff.

The stupidly named Extreme Speed is neither "extreme" nor bracing, but it is a rather nice, restrained release that feels like an attempt to construct a suit-and-tie fragrance for the modern man, by way of Tom Ford.

This opens with a blast of spice which then settles into a creamy blend of woods and increasingly prominent violet that has a kind of "warm sweater on a dreary day" effect, with an almost slate-like, gray-ish feel. It's not very sweet, so it leans mature by default. It feels like it was made to be paired with a charcoal suit.

It's nothing to gush about, but is solid fare nonetheless, a kind of modern day, synth-sleek take on a Grey Flannel-style brief.

I’ve smelled this a few months back unique dark fragrance, not sure I’d wanna wear this though but still good nonetheless.

I think it smells good but I wouldn't wear it. Very heavy on the violet.
But I always try to make a point to try the newest MK fragrance, due to my love for Michael and Michael Kors.
Extreme Rush is the latest 2019 release, I believe. I'm hoping to see it at a discounter soon so I can give that a try as well.

The spicy cardamom and violet combination here is something I haven't encountered before. To keep things sophisticated and formal, it doesn't make a big song-and-dance out of the contrast (which it might do if it was truly EXTREEEEEME), but it's still a distinctive effect.

Violet is a controversial note. I quite like it (it tends to wear cool and smooth with a formal edge), but it's definitely not for everyone.

The "Extreme" branding is dumb and generic. Call Extreme Speed something like Michael Kors Suit & Tie and it already sounds a lot more interesting.

One of the Tommy Hilfiger flankers has a strong violet note, as well as Abercrombie. I think they're both called blue something. There's another one I can't think of....maybe a D&G release? I tried to like each of them but couldn't come around on it. But Michael Kors is the best one that I've tried out of all of them.

I think this leans reasonably mature.

    That's not exactly stiff competition!

The only other really strong violet scent I own right now is Lalique Hommage, which is much more inventive than Extreme Speed.

What makes Extreme Speed nice is how it handles violet. It's not syrupy or grape soda-y as it can often come across, and the cedar/balsam woods plus that very spicy cardamom note give it a bit of that contemporary edge.

In quality, I'd rate it alongside something like the Prada Luna Rossa series, which offers approachable, but pretty decent takes on lavender with contemporary aesthetics. Nothing to drool over, but sturdy releases nonetheless.

I remember it being spicy but just very mediocre and something a novice would wear. No standout qualities but it has been a few months since I tested it.

Yeah, I don't think any teenager or college kid would be into this at all. Odd comment considering the gushing over a another kids scent elsewhere....

Like I said, it's nothing to gush about. It ain't a showstopper. Just an unexpectedly solid release from a largely dismissed house.

Another way of describing this is to say that Estée Lauder took the violet note from Tom Ford Ombré Leather 16 (which was absent from OL18) and built a fragrance around it. So this is Ombré Kors, if you will.

I just have an aversion to this House, which extends through their clothes and accessories and especially the fragrances.

I don't care much for them, except for my amazement in their excellent Michael and Michael Kors. Cat piss? Outside of that supposed bad batch release of Michael Kors, what are you talking about?

Their clothing line is okay. I've seen some cool jackets from MK but everything else looks too cheap or outdated.

I'll say that, given the cross-pollination between "houses," I'm beginning to think of Estée Lauder as the proper house here and the various brands they own as product lines.

A bottle from nearly 10 years ago smelled just like cat pee. Bottle was new at the time. Cat pee, straight up.

Yeah, there was the bad batch that ruined the brand's relaunch. It was pulled from shelves and reissued.

The original Michael for Men does have a slight animalic thing going on, but it's blended in with dried fruits and suede, etc. Anyway, that's neither here nor there since that fragrance has its own thread and this is a separate release with none of that fragrance's DNA.

It must have been Michael for Men (2001). It's quite a 'funky' fragrance with a weird plum note. But I like it a lot.

Right. I referenced that, so I meant aside from that. Especially if Kaern is picking it up in other Kors fragrances, which would be odd.
I wouldn't consider anything by MK as a flanker. They're all their own thing so any similar scent DNA shouldn't be going on.....or is it? Does anyone else feel that way about a similar scent DNA across the board with MK releases? I don't see it.

As said, Extreme Speed is pretty good quality, IMO, but I wouldn't like wearing it with the very strong violet note dominating.

hey -- I never mentioned a pee note -- unless you misread 'pass' for 'piss'

Fair enough. Unless you enjoy violet a lot, or even cinnamon, which is somewhat prominent, you won't miss anything.

For me, though, even if I never wanted to wear it, I'm glad I sampled it. It's an unexpectedly good, solid release.

The quality of the blend/construction is good, which is what impressed me most. Usually I find designer releases either undercooked or too obvious with their compromises.

This is a dusty, dark violet and spice scent, masculine and aloof. It won't set anybody's world on fire, but it's also not something I can claim to have smelled before, exactly. It's kinda/sorta like an unusually subtle Tom Ford Private Blend release (if you made it a little more bombastic, Tom Ford could've released it as Ombré Violet).
