I would say Kouros by a margin (though I have last tried it in 2012, not familiar with the recent stuff). The vintages are better, naturally. I think the current Antaeus (circa 2015-16) is quite good, as is the Kouros from 2011-12. I guess you would find a general consensus in support of Antaeus.

Extremely hard to choose, so I would strongly suggest you go for both.

Both remain quite good in terms of performance regrading their current formulation and given their fairly consistent, sufficient and acceptable performance, only likely to favor, choose and recommend Antaeus based strictly on personal preference rather than any other argument in favor of it

Kouros is more powerful, but my vote goes to Antaeus. It is smoother by margin, while Kouros became fecal and I can’t stand it any more.

I'd have to agree here with Antaeus. Especially in current formulation. Kouros benefited from an ingredient (both of them, really) or two which was once allowed but no more. Sexiest will be impossible to define generally, as something sexy to me (happy face with a good health insurance plan) may be disgusting to others. Kouros will be rough and raunchy, unapologetic, and take what it wants. Anytime, anywhere. Antaeus will give you a bottle of wine, and then seduce you in the back of the manor while your significant other bores the room with political banter in the library. How do you like your sexy?

Both are classics in my book, but I also think this is a textbook case of "apples vs. oranges." Kouros = fougere with animalic elements/Antaeus = "cigar box" (per Luca Turin) woody. Given that both are reasonably widely distributed, I sugget that the OP sample if at all possible.

    Welcome!

Kouros is a love/hate thing even in its current formulation, so you do have to smell it first. I agree with way off scenter, they're quite different. Kouros is more unique and strange relative to Antaeus, which in the current incarnation is a safe blind buy if one likes woods and resins.

Since this is your first post you should clarify about what you're seeking. I wouldn't be surprised if you despised both, for example, if you mostly wear the common designer scents of today. Kouros is more of a "challenge," but then there are cultural factors, so to you it might smell like soap (or at least "urinal cakes"), as some have said over the years. Sample before buying - they aren't super cheapos!

Between the two, in any version, Kouros. Antaeus was very good around 1986.

Currently own and love Antaeus. Formerly owned Kouros, Body Kouros and Kouros Silver and have not missed the YSLs since parting ways. I know, Kouros lovers, let the accusations of blasphemy begin.

I feel like Antaeus has evolved with reformulations rather than just get weaker or cheaper like Kouros has. The point of Kouros was masculinity, and the "honeyed piss/gym bag" smell was part of it's character in that age of hyper-manly scents (see One Man Show).

Antaeus had the animalic too, but it was much broader than that in vintage, although no less fearsome. Modern Antaeus has matured with the toning down of the animalic (by using synthetics undoubtedly), with the focus shifting to the middle notes. I'm not saying it's any better or worse for younger people than Kouros, but it is slightly more approachable in current form.

In either case, they're still both a very acquired taste in 2018, hence the vintage guys going nuts over them, while newer fans kinda get shocked into submission, or run screaming. It's like that first taste or beer: if you come back to explore more, you'll probably like it, but if you don't, you're not a beer guy.

I implore everyone to avoid the white shoulder Kouros, it really sucks. YSL quality has really gone down hill.

Chanel on the other hand still make their own fragrances and do pretty amazing jobs with their reformulations.

OP, since you ask about current my answer would be Antaeus.

But if we were talking vintage, Kouros wins by a mile for me.

This is actually a very accurate and valuable comparison. Antaeus has certainly been toned down from the description. It’s more of a soapy-leathery-aromatic whereas before it was a leather jacket with cigar smoke that never seemed to fade away.

I don’t agree with the piss association although I can see why people think that. It’s definitely some sort of mind trick as per Music Ravageur (= bergamot and lavender in the opening to give the animalics effect) that is happening here.

But I do agree with your assessment that Antaeus has aged well whereas Kouros has been totally watered down. Antaeus is still quite an accurate portrait of the original but Kouros is notably weaker from the first spray.

No new comer though should be put off current Kouros. It is a decent fougere in any formulation and works well in most settings. Just that once you’ve tasted the nectar of the vintage Gods, you can’t go back to the current stuff. Err... I mean forwards?!?!?!

Antaeus in the other hand is perfectly acceptable in its current form. The vintage was a bit too strong for me even.
