Default MAAI BOGUE PROFUMO very good! (but NOT $245.00 good IMHO).

    Hi all,

I finally decided tonight to test one of my (two) samples of MAAI BOUGE PROFUMO.

BOOM! Right away, I VERY much LOVED this Fragrance! I find it rather complex with many

layers although, it appears to be (at least on me) more of a "close to the Skin" scent.

Sure, I could see myself "WANTING" to own Maai Bouge however, at a cost of $245.00 for a

50ml bottle.....(for me, Ol SixCats!) No! Now, no doubt about it "Maai Bouge" will place high on

MY list of TOP favorite "sampled" Fragrances but, for a "little" less money, if "I" (personally) were

going to buy that ONE special (EXPENSIVE NICHE) Fragrance

(as the Crowning Jewel of my collection) as of tonight 5/19/18, that honor would have to

    go to MASQUE MILANO "MONTECRISTO".

    YMMV (and that's perfectly OK).

My other (current) TOP contenders are :

    KNIZE TEN
    RAINA J. OUD ASSAM
    BOADICEA THE VICTORIOUS COMPLEX
    MAZZOLARI LUI
    ETAT LIBRE D'ORANGE RIEN INTENSE
    ETAT LIBRE D'ORANGE CHAROGNE
ETAT LIBRE D'ORANGE MARQUIS DE SADE
    SERGE LUTENS CHENE

That being said, I still have at least twenty to thirty other samples of interest to try out.

So, my TOPS list is still rather "fluid". For example, PAPILLON SALOME as well as

MANCERA RED TOBACCO are also VERY nice! I really am enjoying "MAAI BOUGE"

and, I'd LOVE to own a bottle but, as of tonight, IF I were to spend BIG money on a single

(Crowning Jewel) bottle of Fragrance, yea, me thinks it got to be "MONTECRISTO".

    Just my two cents.

    Regards,
    SixCats!

MAAI is excellent, one of the best perfumes of the last 5 years. I have it, and like wearing it in summers sometimes, particularly late summers - extremely satisfying perfume.

I'm somewhat surprised you find it wears so "close to the skin," SixCats. I found it fairly potent and noticeable at all times.

Regardless, it's pretty gorgeous stuff. (I also loved Montecristo, but ultimately found it a bit "masculine" for me.)

In my experience MAAI does wear somewhat close to skin. It doesn't project a lot unlike Rien or Kouros.

I agree with Hednic. $245 is certainly higher than average, but maybe not too high. Now that I’ve stopped buying every perfume that strikes my fancy, I have more cash flow for ones I really enjoy most.

Gotta get my nose on Maai. Is it similar to Salome, in your opinion?

Go with a decant. It’s not a versatile workhorse so you won’t really need 50 ml of it.

    Touché

I own a decant of MAAI. Barely made a dent in the volume as there are quite a few I’d rather pick instead. But I’m curious to know exactly what makes a >$200+ fragrance full bottle-worthy?

    Hi all,

I very much appreciate all the excellent comments/thoughts and suggestions.

MAAI is indeed a wonderful fragrance! hedic is right, I have to decide ultimately down the road whether it is feasible or not for you to purchase.

After posting my original thoughts about MAAI on my thread, I applied a bit more Fragrance (from sample) and this time, it smelled a bit stronger.

Kotori, I will have to try a "side by side" of SALOME and MAAI to be sure. If memory serves, there are some common notes/style.

Bottom line, I admit to sometimes being a bit TOO quick on the draw. That is to say (despite cost) MAAI is worth the cost to those of you who

find it to be your "Crowning Jewel". Heck, no doubt I'd find a way to justified the price if it were the price of MONTECRISTO.

Yes indeed, I can see "DECANTS" in my future!

MAAI is definitely interesting. I haven't tried Masque Milano Montecristo.

I had some MAAI, and certainly enjoyed it. I passed on the decant to someone else. I was so into vintage at that time (and still am), and I was sampling vintage fragrances I liked even more that I could get for around $50.

    Hi Bavard,

Oooh, yes indeed, if you like "Challenging" Fragrances, I highly suggest trying "Montecristo".

Now, if you like a REAL challenge, give Marlou 50ml d'ambiguite a try!

How cool Bavard that you are exploring vintage Perfumes. I too have been exploring vintage

Perfumes of late! However, unless I can find them (more or less) on the cheap, I'm afraid to buy

them as (even under the best of conditions) vintage Juice tends to change/loose it's top notes,

etc. Of course, I suspect (subliminal, wait, is that your picture Bavard? My Heart be still) there

are exceptions. I recently found a circa 70-'s-80's ? NIB/SEALED Bottle of Rochas "Femme".

Heck, at less than twenty dollars for the bottle, purchasing "Femme" was a "no Brainer".

"Femme" great Juice by the way. That being said (as much as I'm tempted) I'm rather hesitant

to "pull the trigger" on vintage Fragrance if it's TOO expensive (especially) if it has been opened.

I must admit however, "the thrill of the hunt" and exploring vintage/older Fragrances is a heck of

a lot of fun. Thus far, I have found a few NIB bottles, but most bottles used :

    ROCHAS FEMME (NIB)
    LANCOME TRESOR
    LANCOME MAGIE
    LAVINE EAU DE ARPEGE
    DIPTYQUE OFRESIA (as new)
    BALENCIAGA QUADRILLE
    YSL "Y" (NIB)
    NORELL
    GUERLAIN SAMSARA PARFUME ! (NIB)
    GUERLAIN SHALIMAR (X's three)
    VAN CLEFF & ARPELS FIRST
    CAPUCCI YENDI

    Happy hunting Bavard.

I'll jump in and say "Not really."

Not to say that MAAI wouldn't appeal to the same sensibiliities as Salome, but I don't perceive them as smelling very much alike at all.

I have to disagree. This is an excellent fragrance that uses top notch materials including jasmine, tuberose, sandalwood, musk tinctures...etc. All of which are INCREDIBLY expensive. That being said, the tuberose and skanky florals prove to be a bit too much for me.

Perhaps the most complex, intreging,, fragrance that own. It is what I wear when I feel like I want to exude a bit extra "boss" energy... I love this fragrance, and find it worth the price based on the quality of the ingredients, craftsmanship, and projection/silliage.

    Hi Rich,

I'm glad to hear you love Maai Bogue. Ya know Rich, I guess when it comes down to it,

I have to admit (albeit expensive) there are many excellent fragrances that are indeed worth

the price based on the quality of the ingredients, craftsmanship, and projection/silliage.

I just wish they weren't so darn expensive. I could easily list at least a half dozen $$$$ Fragrances

that I'd love to own however, I have to keep it under control least I'd be in the "poor House".

Oooh, I so want (and someday) will purchase "Montecristo" (despite it being VERY expensive).

    Uggggh.

If you like MAAI I implore you to get your nostrils on Fazzolari Au Dela de Narcisse which I find cut from the same olfactory cloth. (Also slightly more affordable as it's sold in the 30 ml bottle only.)

It was hard having AceyMan away. I didn't realize you hadn't tried MAAI. I gave the last of my decant away. MAAI is more daring than Au Dela Narcisse. They're both nice, hip florals. Au Dela Narcisse, to me, is more quiet, relaxed, confident, and polished. MAAI is edgy, animalic, and urinous.

Part of the allure of MAAI is that it smells so much like an old-school, animalic, vintage fragrance. That's not all it is, or has to offer, but that was the main aspect of it that I liked, so wearing something like my scent of the day, vintage Boss No. 1, was my preference to investing in it.

I like it a lot - t's a 'serious' piece of work in a more classical style, IMO.

I don't remember paying that much, though? I grabbed a bottle when it was released . . .
