I had this one pre-Basenotes. I received it as a gift. I loved getting random perfumes as gifts. To me, this stuff is pretty intense, but not for so very long. I kind of liked the shock value of how strong the early stages were. This is the bottle I had, the tall one. You've just backed up a 50-ml, is that right? I seem to remember a shorter one.

    For the Friday Sync:

Fidji (1966) by Josephine Catapano for Guy Laroche

The story goes that Edmond Roudnitska submitted the formula for Le Parfum de Thérèse to Laroche to be released as Fidji, but it was rejected. It's hard to imagine how Thérèse could have fulfilled the brief for an exotic island scent, but Catapano did nail it: green and breezy, with white florals that are light rather than narcotic or fleshy, and an of-its-time chypre base structure. Still, perhaps not light enough for the August heat and humidity, but we'll see.

I have 3 100ml tall ones (a lifetime supply with my wardrobe) with this being my first. The shorter ones are newer and the juice color changed to gray. I can't vouch for the smell, but I know it was done to match the look of the newer (more popular) flankers.

The big notoriety this stuff has among the YT "FragBro" demographic is that it smells like a "cheaper Creed Himalaya", but most of them don't know that this predates Himalaya by nearly a decade (1993 vs 2002), and uses oakmoss and musk in place of Creed's ambrox-powered whambambergris base shared by most of their output (although I do get a sandalwood note in Himalaya not in XS that comes across a tad more "expensive".

I agree, this stuff is particularly strong and sharp, with a metallic green geranium rattle it shares with Chanel Platinum Égoïste (1993), but whereas the Chanel has the aldehydes plus more lavender to go in that pressed suit barbershop fougère direction, XS pour Homme is more traditional green fougère to the end. I actually get pretty good detectable longevity from XS pour Homme, so if it faded quickly on you before, maybe it was anosmia or the wrong weather? I use it primarily in more temperate seasons.

This bottle is the current version, and is yet another one of those, "why-don't-I-wear-this-more-often" fragrances, as I definitely dig it. I also have a current bottle of the EdP, but I have to be honest - I much prefer the EdT - by a wide margin. For one thing, the EdT has greater longevity (for me), and it has more "zing".

As far as relaxing, powdery sandalwoods go, this is worthy of praise.

    Is it groundbreaking? Nope...

Is it the long lost Mysore holy grail? Not even close...

It is a formidable “old world” fragrance that can be worn either to ground or impress... It smells like nothing else I own, which is a good thing, because this is unto itself is an understated yet sophisticated scent of yester-year.
Indeed a very nice and soothing fragrance.

Sense of self-worth and empathy for others are not mutually exclusive though. To believe otherwise is a huge part of why the country (and world) are in the state they are today!

But yes, the fragrance is nice.
