It was only available in 75ml bottles in the form of testers. I ended up going for a 75ml tester of Vintage Tabarome instead.

This is really nice, and totally not what one would expect from a designer in 1997. A green, woody, slightly resinous rose and mixed floral chypre with what seem to be top quality ingredients, as expected from de Silva. It reminds me in some ways of Azzaro Acteur, but less resinous, more herbal/green/soapy, and generally better by a mile, IMO. Maybe Acteur meets Aramis 900, with the quality level of the Aramis.
    Great stuff!

    Nice choice!

Cannot believe how much of a straight up green chypre the base of this GFF is. If I had to blindly guess its era, I’d say 70s, or current indie. I am fairly stunned that this is a 90s designer.

I wouldn't know about Cytherian—I got the sample from you!

Opens a little bit green/vegetal for my tastes, but Dr.T. likes it, probably because it reminds her of Chanel No. 19. Once the edge comes off in the drydown, I like it a lot more. I can't really think what it's like: I just know I'm enjoying it. It has a humid wood quality to it, quite unlike the dry cedar of latter-day WACs (woody aromachemicals). I know it's been described as a leather chypre, but I'm not getting leather so much as fresh forest floor. Earthy, but no appreciable decay.

I don't get any leather but I did get some amber that added a little resin to the base. Lots of Galbanum in the opening which is likely what you're picking up on, it does bring out the green in this one.

Cytherian is a BNer whose father helped create this fragrance back in the 1960s. He was selling decants of it when he was active here.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't it Cytherian's father or uncle that designed those cool looking bottles? Also I think there were two versions and they both smell completely different?

That may have been true. He was involved in those early years and ended up saving a few bottles.

Here's the thread that Cytherian created for Woto: https://www.basenotes.net/threads/37...he-late-1960-s

There was a flanker I think but that one wasn't from Deviline.

Yeah, I couldn't remember if it was Cytherian's father or a friend of the family, but I knew he was connected. I think Cytherian may still have been active here when I came on board, but we never got to know each other. Perhaps I just read a lot of his old posts and references to him.

Your description of the base "resin-ates," and I'm sure you're correct about the galbanum.

Grace Hummel describes Woto thusly on Cleopatra's Boudoir:

"A very pungent green note of galbanum mixed with bright bergamot and some sparkling aldehydes is the first to greet and tickle my nose. Then this is followed by a ferny goodness that some of you know from other vintage fougère fragrances, that exquisite fern accord, altogether earthy, deep, dark foresty and backed by some spices, labdanum, myrrh, opoponax and a hint of geranium, orris and some herbal notes combining lavender and clary sage.

Then comes the oakmoss, oh yes, the oakmoss, this cologne is rife with a generous helping of pure, authentic vintage oakmoss. The cologne has a 'fuzzy' balsamic overall effect when I sniff it over and over again. Some very good vintage perfumes and colognes have this 'fuzziness' or velvety-ness, I cannot think of another way to describe this, but it is very enveloping and is perfectly blended and is probably from Iso E Super or musk ambrette. There is some naughty civet and leather hidden deep inside the resinous drydown with some patchouli leaves, amber, cedar, powdery tonka bean and sandalwood. There is a note in there that reminds me of vintage Opium perfume. Absolutely stunning from start to finish. I would think that a very good niche perfumer could remake this and have a best seller on their hands."

That sounds about right to me!

And to nosey74, yes, there was a Woto Sandalwood flanker, though how different it smelled from regular Woto, I'm not in a position to say.

Completed my second wearing of Guerlain Gardenia:
    https://guerlainperfumes.blogspot.co...nia-c1870.html

Top notes: Orange Blossom, Neroli, Bergamot
Heart notes: Gardenia, Jasmine, Rose, Ylang Ylang, Lilac
Base notes: Vanilla, Musk, Sandalwood, Civet

Guerlain's take on Gardenia takes on darker approach compared to others, specifically the one from Chanel. The opening had some tart bergamot that added a brief moment of brightness before plunging into the deep. The gardenia note soon appears and receives support from other florals. I'm sensing some of the skanky jasmine and deep rose notes in the heart which contributes to the darkness in Gardenia. The florals are met with even darker notes in the base. Present are the notes of civet and musk which contribute to the animalistic qualities, vanilla which adds a minimal amount of sweetness, and wood notes which adds a supporting backbone to the base. The gardenia florals never fully disappear but is blended by the other notes present in the drydown. Performance for Gardenia is good. It's fairly strong early on before staying closer to the skin in the later stages of the scent. For those who enjoy gardenia this is one worth trying.

I had previously sampled Ho Hang Club and finally got around to getting a bottle - I dig it. But I have to admit, it's not what I would call a "versatile scent" in terms of when to wear it. I had the day off, and decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a full wear today, but honestly, for me, this is a night time fragrance; it was a bit much for a casual day time wear....I also have sampled Ho Hang - I dig that one also; I find it to be much more "versatile" than Ho Hang Club, and more....hmmm...."well mannered". Ho Hang is (at least the sample I had/have) a rather discreet, gentlemanly scent and I like it - just wish it were stronger - that's my only quibble with that one.

Top posting on Ho Hang Club. When I'm in the mood to break the rules and disregard societal norms I go with Ho Hang Club in the daytime.

At the moment, I have a bottle of Cosmair Polo ready to hand that I have returned to as my scent of the day. All Polo bottles look the same, so I might not take a picture.
