Default Terre D'Hermes is quite unique - My first experience with Terre

    Guys,

Today I tried Terre D'Hermes for the first time. Took me ages to get enough courage and do it.

I agree that it should be considered a modern classic, since I think it is quite UNIQUE. It is basically a dry smell of orange with minerals. I don't regret having bought a full bottle.

It is not so unique if you learn to identify Iso E Super, as Terre D'Hermes is stuffed full of this stuff. I am sure Terre D'Hermes is great for people who like it, but many people are sensitive to Iso E Super, and this ruins the whole fragrance for them.

From a personal viewpoint alone and with no guarantees regarding a certain subjectivity: did like this quite a bit, though not so much as its flankers, not so much as other unisex/masculine Hermes fragrances but also as a possible benchmark for further citrus-vetiver-woody scents released short before and similar to this without being 100% plagiarisms or copies of TDH.

Even so, while not so thrilled about this one as much as the other aforementioned scent categories just described, can or at least trying to still objectively acknowledge its contribution (s) to being a trendsetter, but also a certain benchmark, a reference value for many masculine designer and even mass market or conversely niche releases, as well as an entire style and fragrance history turning point based on and made possible by this.

In retrospect, the TdH line looks a lot like the "masculine" mirror to Eau des Merveilles and its flankers insofar as they're both "salty citrus" lines.

I don't like TdH as much as I like Eau des Merveilles, but as far as major designer releases from the past fifteen years go, it isn't bad.

Not bad imo, eventually after repeated wears lost its appeal to me some fragrances have this issue this is one of them for me.

Yes, Eau des Merveilles is quite different from everything else, and I bought a bottle, but I gave it to my aunt (a less frantic collector), since she loves it more than I do.

I won't be giving her my Terre.

TdH was a revelation for me in my fragrance journey. If you love Iso E Super and vetiver, as I do, this is a clear winner. Also one of the only citrus scents I wear year-round. For me, this is as close as I've come to having a "signature" fragrance. If you like the EdT, try the EdP. It's an even richer, more dense version - an improvement on a masterpiece, if that's possible.

When you mention it, that is exactly what is smells like to my nose too. It is definitely a polarising scent.

I don’t think I am a mosquito, but it sure repels me effectively enough.

It took me ages to come around to this one.

I own & love TdH Parfum, but something about TdH bugged me. But now, I've done a 180. Something about TdH clicked with me recently. I might even buy a bottle. (EDIT: And now I have!)

Both TdH & TdH Parfum are outstanding - but keep in mind that TdH Parfum is not just a stronger concentration of TdH. It's a different scent. Similar, but different. So make sure you try both.

Having Iso E Super doesn't make it not unique. You may be sensitive to it, and I feel bad that you do, but not all Iso E Super laden fragrances are the same. I believe this composition and more importantly, the resulting fragrance is quite unique. Though it's been around a while and may start losing it's allure. Of course to some of, like the OP, who's experiencing it for the first time, it can indeed be unique.

For me, TDH was my gateway drug to discovering other fragrances. I was a signature scent type of a guy, only wearing 1 (maybe 2) fragrances at a time and then looking for the next bottle, etc. TDH was the next bottle and got me to start googling fragrances online and discovering Basenotes, YT reviewers, etc. And now I practically wear a different fragrance daily like most here.

So, TDH holds a special place in my collection for sure and love the unique "dirty orange" vibe that it gives. These days though, I probably prefer Eau Tres Fraiche a bit more and looks forward to wearing it in the summer time.

It is great stuff. As you love TdH, I recommend you get your nose on Tzora by Anat Fritz if you ever get the chance. It refines the superb TdH formula even further.

I am sure you are right. It is just that I have the same negative reaction with all fragrances that have a lot of Iso E Super. I cannot really say if it smells unique or not.

I’ll have to try that. Also, if you like TdH, try Cartier Déclaration, which is the blueprint (and excellent in itself).

    It’s pretty darn good.

I agree that it’s been a gateway into fragrance, especially for those from the younger Gen X/older Gen Y demographic who would have otherwise only nursed from two bottles at most previously. For a designer it was groundbreaking and pivotal, for Jean-Claude Ellena and Hermès it was a proper introduction in a new century whereupon I suspect most would soon try another from the house. This before realizing their slowly-evolving noses preferred to guide them through scent accords rather than faithfulness to designers and/or marketing.

Myself, I’ve had this and all its flankers except for the Parfum. But because I still have an older, non-reformulated, bottle of TdH I’m good for now. Obviously from what I hear I cannot go back now.

Out of all them I’ve actually had more TdH Eau Trés Fraiche bottles in my time. It was my go to everything scent for at least 4 years and, yes, I even - gasp! - wore it at all times of year. I’m on my last 10mLs of what must be my 3rd bottle. But over the last year I’ve worn it so sparingly (or is that I’m just choosing it less?), so I think that I’ve hit the end of the TdH era for the time being. I really do enjoy the collection but my nose is leading me someplace new. And this is from someone who loves his bitter orange, neroli, etc.

    Agreed.

Backwards in time and this is a really enjoyable JCE number. If I were older then I would have more naturally tried/worn this first.

I'll basically parrot this comment, since it sums up my feelings on TdH as well. I honestly can't imagine getting tired of it, or not having some form of it in my collection (if forced to choose just one, the parfum).

To me Terre d'Hermès and Cartier Déclaration are like sides to a coin (because they're both green scents made by Jean-Claude Ellena). Terre goes more for patchouli while Déclaration goes more for spice, but both have a really raw vetiver vibe I enjoy.

My favorites are Parfum, Eau Intense Vetiver and Eau Tres Fraîche. EDT gives me a strong headache.
I don’t understand. It is so vast that surpasses all understanding.Understanding is always limited. But not understanding can have no boundaries.I feel like I'm much more complete when I don't understand. Not understanding, like I say,is a gift. Not understanding, but not as a simple-minded.The good thing is to be intelligent and not understand. It's a strange blessing, like having craziness without being crazy. It is a meek disinterest,it is a stupid sweetness.

Funny you should mention that. I've been enjoying Bigarade Concentrée lately. Bigarade Concentrée fits right in with TdH & Declaration in terms of the citrus, but it uses cedar & hay rather than vetiver & patch, obviously making for a very different scent... but the connection between the three seems very clear to me. Even if one didn't know Bigarade Concentrée was by JCE, it'd be easy to guess, and I mean that as a compliment to the quality of his work.

I remember trying that one and I liked it but it's in the same quality tier with 3x the price tag so I ended up not being so kind to it. I definitely see the connection though.
