Question Re: Shave of the Day

Hi, I have a question for you shavers...

What shave prep do you typically reach for/use? (Foam, cream, gel?) Why do you use this?

Or if you don’t use any shave gels/foams/creams etc, why?

Apologies if this isn’t suitable for this forum, just thought you would be able to help me out

I might not be the best one to answer this question, as I'm a much simpler shaver. Generally, I use foam and a Gillette cartridge razor. My reasoning is that this was how I was taught, it's affordable and, ultimately, convenient. It just works for me. I have also used a cream before, which is a more luxurious experience.

I usually use a pre-shave from Grooming Dept, followed by using a badger brush to lather a shave soap (most of the time by Saponificio Varesino).

As to why? In the case of the pre-shave, most that I tried did nothing for me, but this particular one from the Grooming Dept. noticeably makes my shaves smoother with less irritation. In the case of the shave soap choice, SV Italian shave soaps are top quality and long lasting, with excellent fragrances.

    Hi all,

Funny, I didn't even realize BN had a "Shaving" page. I normally post at the "Vintage Gillette Safety Razor Collectors" page on Facebook. However, since I am (as of today Saturday 2/27/21) in "FACEBOOK JAIL", I have been spending extra time exploring other pages here at BN. Today, I enjoyed a very nice Shave (about three days beard growth) using a "milder" shaving Razor in my collection, that being a PRE War Gillette "Fat Handle (triangular slotted) Tech. I used a Russian Gillette NACET blade (my favorite blades).

I experienced a veeery fine/smooth/comfortable Shave using the simple Tech. As of this March 2021, it will be two years since I began collecting vintage (mostly Gillette) Razors. Most of my Razors have been found in the "wild" at the likes of Antique Shops/Yard Sales/Flea Markets/etc. I have amassed nearly TWO HUNDRED vintage Razors in less than 24 Months. Yea, I went a little bit overboard having RAD.

I have so many Razors that I had actually stopped collecting for many months. I presently use about twenty to twenty five favorite Razors that I keep in my "user" rotation. Last week, I just so happened to visit an Antique/Flea Market type shop. Seriously, I wasn't even really looking for Razors and instead looking for vintage Colognes/Perfumes. I was on my way out of the Shop and, lo and behold, what should I spied with my little Eye sitting alone on the shelf in a Glass Cabinet ? My my my, what have we here ? A lone vintage Gillette Razor but, not the more common "Super Speed". TA-DAH! I found a Gillette (195) FATBOY circa 1960 F-4 adjustable Razor in damn near pristine condition! YES!

The price I paid for this Razor was less than half of what it would of cost me for a bottle of "Wild Turkey 101" Bourbon. I find it rather ironic my finding this FATBOY as it just so happens that the very first (back in March 2019) Razor I found (right out the gate, my very first time hunting for a vintage Razor) I find a (model unknown to me at the time) first year production (1958) vintage Gillette (195) FATBOY D-4 Adjustable Razor. I paid eight dollars for that FATBOY! Today, that same FATBOY" is my favorite "user" adjustable Razor. Happy Shaving everyone!

    SixCats!
