I have a 5ml decant i bought, and after a month or so the nozzle smells like fish. Wonder if its some sort of reaction happening with the plastic

I actually have this issue with a bunch of atomizers that I purchased from Amazon. The atomizers give off a certain odor, however in my experience the issue almost always ceases once I have sprayed them a few times.

I find that quite a few fragrances, when smelled directly from the atomizer (i.e. in the store) have an odd fishy smell and often you can’t figure out the fragrance from it. Spraying it on skin however completely removes that.

Poor QA or quality atomizers in my opinion.

If the person who decanted your sample used latex gloves (which hopefully they did use), the interaction between the gloves and the atomizer could replicate the smell that you have mentioned. Try wiping the atomizer down with rubbing alcohol and see if it goes away.

Doesnt effect the smell, as some you say. Just a bit weird when you want to smell without wearing

I think it's the plastic atomizer. Experienced this quite a few times with a few samples I've owned.

it's because of a low quality, cheapest possible sprayer off Amazon. I just got a pack myself; poured in the stuff, sprayed, and it was a greasy, fishy version of what I smelled from the dabber. checking the other vials, yeah there's something gross smelling, fish+ butt, dog anal gland secretion horribleness. it must be some combination of cheap, old lubricant for the plunger, and sitting in a warehouse.

to me, it completely changes the smell and performance of what's inside.

The only bad smell I have gotten from an atomizer is the stale air trapped inside. I always worry how or if that will react with the fragrance being poured into it.

. I guess it‘s usually the cheap and designer ones at airport duty frees or so. I don‘t get to smell mich perfumes from the sprayet directl and usually don’t want to.

This thread has been so validating and eye opening as I’ve certainly noticed this before and it totally turned me off of an affected scent I once sampled (now I learned undeservedly!). The strange thing is I have gotten samples from the same store and presumably the same mini atomizers were used and didn’t experience the off odor for those (I only smelled it with a decanted sample of “II” from Cire Trudon); is it a specific chemical reaction that only some materials might cause with this?

Also, more importantly, does anyone have a good source for mini atomizers that *DONT* have this issue?? Or even what to look out for when buying some? The mini atomizer market isn’t huge... I’m interested in small (3ml) size atomizers to use for samples of fragrances I’m creating and am terrified of the idea that they might develop that same wretched fishy odor—and paint a sordidly unfair impression of the scents for the people I send them to!

I'm currently using these 3ml atomizers from Amazon. For the price, I'm satisfied with the quality, and they haven't had any smell at all. I would purchase them again.

I've received about 5 or 6 fishy smelling 5ml decants from multiple sellers over the years. I also had a skunky smelling one, recently.

Learned that they are from the cheap ones that have a plastic see through cap that most sellers use.

I suppose if someone was purchasing sprayers to do their own filling, they could run some alcohol through them first, and then set them aside to let it dry out, before going ahead and using them ?

Sounds fishy to me. Fortunately I haven't had this happen yet either. And, I'm sorry for those who have because that's one of the last things you want your fragrance to smell like, right?

Maybe theses cheapo plastic atomizers are being shipped with cases of tuna fish on a slow boat.

I bought a couple that smelt so strongly of gasoline that washing them multiple times couldn't remove the smell. I had to discard them. They weren't even that cheap.

Can't say that I've noticed that. Regularly cleaning your atomiser may help.

Don't know if this matters, but what fragrance is it? lol
It's possible maybe you just don't like the fragrance that much? There are some that contain notes that, to me personally, just stink. I won't list what they all are, because I don't really want to hurt anyone's feelings, I'm just saying that's all.

Or..there's something wrong with your sample. I've ordered decants that have had problems.

It isn't a reaction with the plastic it is just how the cheap plastic that is used in them smells. I bought some cheapo atomizers off Amazon and they all have the smell without being filled.

Agree with others it’s the atomizer, or at least the material of the nozzle. I tried a clean dry cloth, alcohol prep pad, and rinsing with plain water. No effect.
