Default Sad News for NYC - Century 21 is closing

    https://www.thestreet.com/investing/...will-wind-down

I'm not sure if Century 21 is very highly regarded by BNers or not..... My recollection is they had mostly designer stuff in recent years. But it was a fairly unique store and fun to take a look around whenever visiting NYC. Even if you didn't buy anything you could borrow some consumer vibe from one of the travelers that was filling up a suitcase. As someone that prefers walking about to shopping on a screen this is a loss and have to wonder if anything similar will open up in the future or if people will talk about "the good old days at Century 21"....

In other news, didn't add a link, but Neiman Marcus had some wild legal shenanigans occur but has been purchased and will continue as a going concern, so that's one that will still be around at least for a while.

Did they also sell fragrances? I don't recall. Most people I knew went there for clothes.

That's a small sign of relief.

I don't remember in the longer term, but the last few times I was there say the last 3 years they did have fragrances. I believe the mens were on the top floor against the wall kind of next to the checkout registers there, and they also had them along the wall shelves behind where you checked out on the main floor.

Granted I'm just a sample point of one, but I spent half my life living in NYC, and I never set foot in Century 21.

Definitely not a spot the average BNer would care about for fragrances (though they did host Diptyque sample sales from time to time), but wow will I miss it.
You'd have to go with an open mind, and it helped to go frequently—you could sort of tell when there were lulls which meant good things might be ahead. Their reduced price wasn't worth it, to me—you'd have to wait until things were on sale. THAT'S when it was good.

Thanks, C21 for beautiful Margiela blazers, for Marni jackets and pants, for Missoni sweaters, for that weird Jil Sander pullover that I would never wear but had fun trying on, and for that Adam Kimmel jacket I tried on but didn't have the money to buy it at the time but still think about it and wish I had.

My partner found many a hidden fashion gem at Century21 over the years. She was pretty bummed when I shared the news with her a few days ago.

Am thinking two possibilities.... 1 - you are not into clothes much like you are fragrances.... or...... 2 - viewed it more as a tourist place to go not for locals, it seemed like it had that reputation a bit....

Many of the times I visited NYC my host would insist on going. Now maybe they wanted to go as much as take me, but either way it was a fun stop and kind of became a tradition.

For someone that never went it's kind of like a TJ Maxx/TK Maxx but where most of the stock is higher priced or more rare brands you wouldn't see at maxx. If you like looking through things to find a deal it had its rewards. I'm with mrmorel, I still remember a hand-made Zegna cashmere sweater that was like regular $4000 marked to 400 or something but for some reason I didn't buy it...... I think the last thing I did buy were a couple of Portolano cashmere scarves for a stupid price like $20....

Very true. I was born and raised in Manhattan and still have a residence there and visitors from out of town would always seem to want to go there although I can count the times on one hand that I myself stepped inside.

Not the former. I was into clothes for quite some time, but I generally scratched my bargain shopping itch either in the designer resale shops in the East Village (e.g., Tokio 7) and Upper East Side (e.g., Gentleman's Resale) or at Neiman Marcus Last Call out in Woodbury Commons. And of course, the Barneys Warehouse sale. I think I actually did venture into Century 21 once or twice, but found the hit/miss ratio underwhelming. Still, it's sad for those who shopped and worked there.

I've been in there all but once and it was an absolute madhouse. I had better luck at Daffy's and Filene's Basement (RIP to both)

All of these high-end couture discounters are going out of business because of increasing economic divide the pandemic, and of course modern designers preferring to take their clothes back and incinerate them (looking at you Burberry) rather than let be discounted, to keep up apperances of exclusivity and face-value. Such a waste.

I didn't frequent Century 21 but had been in a few times over the years. I actually got a bottle of Pure Tonka there for $30. Aside from that the fragrance selection and prices weren't great.

I happened to stop in last night to see if they had any going out of business deals. The fragrances were an additional 10% off the lowest price but again, the selection wasn't great and the lowest marked down price was still more than what you can find online. They did have Aventus, though I couldn't see the price (in a locked glass cabinet) and I wasn't interested in it so didn't bother to ask.
