Nearest you'll get to "animalistic" that is still in production: Hermes Bel Ami. Perhaps something like French Lover or Caron 3rd Man.

'Animalistic' is relative. What are some perfumes that you consider to be so? So is 'male' - do you mean marketed to men?

Would you consider Antaeus or Bel Ami to be animalistic? If so, they would definitely be worth exploring. If they're not animalistic enough, I would say Salome by Papillon would be a good place to start.

Most true chypres in the designer realm are extinct at least as far as civet and castoreum.

There are still a few fragrances that have an animalic dose of cumin.

    Eau D’Hermes
Bel Ami as mentioned by Rum
    Eucris
    Aramis

If you want the good ol’ stuff, it will be vintage territory or indie.

    Eau D’Hermes
Phrased much better by the Sheik than myself. And Eau D’Hermes is another really good suggestion.

Amouage Gold Man is also another. Still in production but the vintage bottles have a better "animalistic" civet note.

    Agreed.

Quorum could be a another worth looking at, based on the cumin. And I'll second Yatagan as mentioned by GoldWine.

I love Aramis but I don't consider myself a 'lover' of 'animalistic'. Are there any of these that do the Aramis vibe better than Aramis does? Or should I just grab a vintage Aramis?

Chypre Siam might be a good fit. Personally, I'm obsessed with Nicolai's New York Intense but the animalic facets are blended so well and are not in the forefront.

Arabian Horse by Parfumerie Generale. Kinda leather chyprish, with its labdanum. Very much an animal. No oakmoss of course, but grassy.

Vintage Aramis is outright awesome, IMHO. Suave and very virile. Utterly well-groomed in a black suit with a hairy chest and sweaty balls.
That said, the current version is still very good! Not the same level of dirtyness from leather and castoreum, but very good.
For vintage, any bottle (splash or spray) that says "cologne" or "eau de cologne".

Quorum and Yatagan are both very similar to me due to the artemisia (wormwood). Lumiere Noir is also similar due to the common note.
I can't say I see the latter as 'animalistic', but Quorum, yes.

    All solid choices.

Many fragrances used to be ‘animalic’ but as they got IFRAed or companies reformulated them for modern tastes they lost the things that made them animalic. Recent Antaeus for instance I don’t think of that way but vintage really had that warm hum. Now it’s still a dog but without its ‘enthusiasm’.

Animalic chypres (and chypres in general) has taken a real beating. Especially the classics. Best bet for getting a "true" animalic chypre would probably be from the non-IFRA niche/indie houses? I'm not very well versed in that category, though.

Bel Ami Vetiver has a deeper hum than Bel Ami (like a castoreum note).
    +1 Salome

    Bogart One Man Show, perhaps.
A September rotation of vetiver and leather : Etro Gomma and Vetiver; Hermes Equipage and Bel Ami; Caron Yatagan; Knize Ten; Jacomo Jacomo de Jacomo; Lalique Encre Noire; Gucci Guilty Absolute; Puig Quorum.

Amazing perfume. To me it's not animalistic, and not a chypre either. Fragrantica lists it as woody oriental, I find it to be a musky oriental. That musky aspect is perhaps what comes across as animalistic to some.

Definitely one for the OP to check out.

I gave it a positive and 3.5/5 in my review, but I shall update/upgrade it at some point.

Very good names already mentioned, also adding G Man by Gainsboro, Preferred Stock by Coty and most Marbert fragrances that happen to still be in production (even if as re-editions) like Man, Homme and Gentleman

Vintage Aramis. The modern version is great, but the older stuff has more of that musky, leathery growl that comes with animalics.

Ungaro pour L'Homme II. Civet note is probably most noticeable, but it has most, if not all, other hallmarks of a chypre.
