Default Is it ok to wear a fragrance just for yourself?

I guess I know it's fine to wear a fragrance that you like, just because you like it.

What I am saying is that I am thinking of buying a fragrance because I love it, despite my friends and family being quite underwhelmed by it. I see a lot of posts about what fragrances do you get compliments on. I see a lot of posts about which batch of certain fragrances have the best sillage and scent.

I am thinking of doing the opposite and getting a fragrance that I love, but those close to me dont.

The fragrance is tom ford - tobacco oud. It reminds me of the smell of my fathers study when he was messing around with a pipe or two. He didnt always even smoke them - just filled them and opened various tobacco tins.
I dont think tobacco oud makes me smell like I smoke a pipe at all, I just get waves of tobacco scent throughout the day and I find this a thing of great beauty.

Anyway - just wondering if anyone else buys fragrances that they alone seem to like.

I have a few that people around me are not excited about. Having a few is fine, in my case. Overall, I like it even more when I love a fragrance and the people around me love it too. Once I got to around 20 fragrances that I liked about equally well, it didn't matter if four or five got cut.

TF Tobacco Oud is a great scent! Go for it. If you worry that you may put people off, just go easy on the number of sprays.

This is true 100% for me as well.
FYI: I spray all fragrances on clothing, never on skin.

I too wear fragrances and make purchases simply for my pure enjoyment, and if my wife or others enjoy them to then that's just an added bonus. Sounds like this scent might have a meaningful connection for you. Also keep in mind that over time those around you might really come to love the scent as much as you do!

All my fragrances through the years have always been for myself. I don't care what others think.

I wear perfume for my own enjoyment and mostly as an enhancement for my mood. I rarely get compliments.

My sister is the complete opposite. I gave her a gift of very nice perfume that I took great care in selecting for her. She didn't like it until she got some compliments. Then she loved it! Being attractive to others is her primary enjoyment.

She is an extreme extrovert and I'm quieter and more self contained. Personality is a factor in how one uses fragrance to express oneself.

It depends, if I'm wearing challenging fragrances, I don't like friends or coworkers being turned off by them, so I don't.

I enjoy Kouros so I wear it but I know that my SO doesn’t so I don’t wear it around her.

Yes, surely. You are with the über fragrance nerds here, a lot of us just wear what they want.

I have some fragrances that people like and some that they don‘t. There are also ones that part of my friends love and part loathe (e. g. GGA). I wear what I want, basically.

The only thing I always consider is a certain appropriateness. When I‘m at work, I wouldn‘t choke out everyone around me with a huge application of something very challenging. For me, it goes without saying and is an act of politeness and respect for others.

Have fun with your fragrances! Many lovers of Tobacco Oud here!

    Thanks everyone for your responses.

I am going to go be a bit braver when it comes to trying fragrances, and I am not ruling out a scent just because it is less popular.

    Thanks for the support!

How a scent makes me feel is the first consideration. Things like mood, temperature, and time of day come after that. Compliments come after all of those. Just do what brings you inner happiness or contentment.

I have never bought or worn a fragrance because someone else likes it.
I always buys a fragrance because I like it, and I get rid of it when I no longer do.

Enjoy yourself, Mark! Tobacco Oud is a great fragrance and one of my favorites. Buy what you love despite what others think. If you ever need a crowd-pleaser, you already have some other options.

Why not? If enjoying a fragrance, wearing entirely for oneself is likely among the best choices.

The fact that TF Tobacco Oud is attached to a memory like your fathers pipe tobacco is all the more reason to acquire it for yourself. My love for TFTO is attached to the memory of the pipe tobacco that my grandmother used to smoke. Really has that tobacco leaf smell in it that reminds me of her. A fragrance that takes you to a good place is a positive thing.

Well yes, I have a fragrance called Gucci Guilty Absolute that smells bad to most other people, and I wear it sometimes. Of course, whether other people are likely to enjoy your fragrance or not is important to take into account, when you're around others. As a general rule, it's important to be pleasant to others, and not to be unpleasant. Your personal enjoyment comes first when it comes to fragrances, however. Personally, I'm more likely to wear something like Dior Homme Cologne in a classroom because it's inoffensive, and reserve more daring choices for when all I won't be in very close proximity to others for a prolonged period of time. Go ahead and buy Tobacco Oud, just take others into account a little bit when you decide when to wear it.

Because some will criticize this post, I'll respond in advance. I take into account the experience other people who smell my fragrance, not because I seek their approval like a puppy dog, but simply out of empathy. There's nothing wrong with that.

I wear some fragrances (such as citrus scents) for the aromatherapy benefits sometimes, so yes, when I do that I would say I'm mostly just wearing it for myself! Truthfully, I pick most of my fragrances because I just like them too. I'm not always thinking about what other people think of them. I think sometimes some people may have a false impression that "people wear fragrance to show off"especially people who are just not that "into" perfume. Honestly though, I just enjoy wearing fragrance!

I don;t buy with that goal, but half of the frags I buy are probably not crowdpleasers, and I wear and enjoy them mostly by myself. It's the best way to enjoy them imo, as I can sniff it as much as I want without looking like a weirdo.

As for TF Tobacco Oud, it's probably one of the only 3 TF frags I find to be bottle worthy, but if I may give you a suggestion: try Rania J. - T Habanero. Better quality, better creativity, bolder, and cheaper, on the same tobacco/oud theme.

If several people I am close to complained vociferously about a particular scent, I might think twice about wearing it, but for the most part, I wear whatever appeals to me.

Go for it! I wear Knize Ten even though I am the only one at my house who likes it. Tobacco Oud is a great scent--I greatly prefer it to Oud Wood.

I would only make an exception if someone actually hated a scent. Years ago I told my wife that I would buy her a replacement bottle of anything she wanted if she stopped wearing YSL's Champagne around me. I just cannot stand that scent. She got a lovely bottle of Coco in its place and gave away the Champagne to a friend. Many years ago my father got Givenchy Gentlemen as a gift--he was an Aramis wearer so it seemed like a good fit. My mother, however, did not think so and asked him to keep it in his locker at the golf club which backfired on her because whenever he came back from a round of golf, he smelled like freshly applied GG (which I quite like).
