I’ve seen nothing but raves about the vintage... wish I could try it. But I do love the current version.

Maybe a timeless classic choice like Azzaro pour Homme, if he is in his 80s his sense of smell may need a nudge more than yours so don't go too light, but Eau Sauvage (original) is always incredible if you do want to go to a fresher lighter feeling fragrance...

It is also wonderful, the original was one of my first scents, crazy choice for a 14 year old girl but I fell in love with it for some reason, it was so delicious and warm, it just made me think of the rich orange shades of an intense sunny hot day, my besties dad was horrified when ever I would go round probably drowned in it, I can now understand why!

Other options might include Cartier L'Envol EDP or Floris 1962.

IMO Fahrenheit is an excellent option. It’s a timeless classic. Eau Sauvage, Armani Eau Pour Homme, Terre D’Hermes Eau Intense Vetiver, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme...
    speckmann list is also excellent.

I don’t understand. It is so vast that surpasses all understanding.Understanding is always limited. But not understanding can have no boundaries.I feel like I'm much more complete when I don't understand. Not understanding, like I say,is a gift. Not understanding, but not as a simple-minded.The good thing is to be intelligent and not understand. It's a strange blessing, like having craziness without being crazy. It is a meek disinterest,it is a stupid sweetness.

Every so often , Floris has a discovery set on sale .
It contains 89 , Elite , JF and Santal.
They're not overly strong, and are certainly dapper.
There's 14mls in each of the 4 bottles.
They come in a nice box which you can keep them all in.
I believe they have gift wrapping available too.
    I got my set for $55 ,
Not sure if they'll have the sale before your grandfathers birthday though.

The set at that price sells out quickly though.
