    Default Vetiver chit-chat

Just a thread to talk openly about all and nothing... as far as it smells of vetiver!

    A few ice breakers:
    1. What is the most recent vetiver fragrance you bought that "wowed" you?
    2. Which is your next vetiver fragrance on your to buy list?
    3. Which under the radar vetiver fragrance(s) would you like to receive more info about?

    For me:
    1. Mona di Orio - Vetyver
    2. Motif Olfactif - Atelier Vetu de Vert
    3. Miller Harris - Veti Vert, Imaginary Authors - Every Storm a Serenade and Thomas Kosmala - Tonic Vert

As said before, these are just ice breaking questions, but feel free to go in the direction you want, and openly share your vetiver love stories and general questions.

PS: lack of inspiration? Just look HERE

    1. Most recent vetiver - I guess Eau Sauvage Parfum 2011/2012 version, but I already owned it, it's just a partial bottle I found. But as far as NEW to me as well as great.. one of the Ensar Oud essential oils I suppose, all 3 are great!
    2. Next vetiver - unknown, I just bought Miller Harris Vetiver Insolent & Givenchy Vetyver yesterday or so, waiting on both to arrive.
    3. Under the radar - hmm, one I'd like others to check out is Oriza L. Legrand Vetiver Royal Bourbon. One that I'm interested in.. I'll go with Vetiveria by Fiele Fragrances for now.

    1. TF Grey Vetivér EDP. Might not be the most complex vetivér out there, but I love it.
    2. Not sure.. I'll focus my next sample order around vetivér and oud.
    3. None for now.

    1. JOVOY PRIVATE LABEL most recent that wowed me. Though I suppose technically a "leather" scent, it has a strong, earthy, dark vetiver which really clicks for me, and it's not a type of scent I normally like.

    2. Not sure about next vetiver. Though a favorite note, not seeing or testing any lately that compel me to purchase. PRIVATE LABEL was so seriously dark, earthy and different, it won me over. Typically every vetiver I try gets contrasted and compared to GUERLAIN VETIVER and few make me feel like it's so much better I want or need it. The ROJA DOVE VETIVER seemed very, very nice, but to my nose not significantly so much better than GUERLAIN for me to justify purchase at those prices.

    3. Vetyver - Les Nombres d'Or looks intriguing for under the radar vetiver. Or Legrand Royal Bourbon Vetiver.

My favorite is CREED VETIVER 1948 which is now long vaulted.
Between Covid and retirement I don't get out much. But when I do, I smell real good.

I don't really equate vetiver and wow as synonymous, but Hermessence Vetiver Tonka is probably the best vetiver scent that I've tried. Not your typical vetiver citrus scent like Grey Vetiver or Paul Smith Story. It is a nice sweet hazelnut vetiver. Perhaps a bit pricey, but probably the only vetiver I would see as full bottle worthy.

    1.) Guerlain Vetiver (vintage)

2.) I hear rumors of a pumpkin and vetiver combo that many here hope to hit the market sooner rather than later, yet those who seek this house learn the art of patience.

3.) I will echo Circo in the above post

I'm not that into vetiver, but I did try Vetiver Extraordinaire again more recently, and I really liked it. Vetiver 46 is also better to my nose than I originally thought, though I'm still not sure how much I like it.

I don't really look for vetivers that I'm interested in buying.

I'd like to try Vetiver Moloko a bit more and hear more about it.

I don't find vetiver under-represented in niche. Not necessarily oddball, but here's some vetivers..

    Nishane Sultan Vetiver
    Amouage Dia Man
Oriza L. Legrand Vetiver Royal Bourbon
MPeG Racine / Route du Vetiver
and the Ensar stuf; the essential oils are amazing
    TDC Sel de Vetiver
    Creed Original Vetiver
Guerlain Homme L'Eau Boisee (if you consider Guerlain niche)
Roja Vetiver Parfum Pour Homme (+ Parfum Cologne)

    Others:
    Private Label
    Vetiver 46
    Mona di Orio Vetyver
    Vetiver Oriental
    Vetiver Extraordinaire
    French Lover
Also look at stuff from DS & Durga and Bois 1920.

Probably a good chunk of indie/under the radar vetivers.

1.) Sycomore EDT. We are approaching the season here in N. America where it really shines.

2.) I had been searching for something bright and fresh, with gravitas. Leafy and green I suppose, not brown and rooty. Something relatively simple and affordable. Not niche/obscure. A "dumb reach."

3.) I want to know more about fragrances from Point 2.

I tend not to like the classic, earthy vetivers.....for very long, that is.

My favorite vetiver is still Creed's Vetiver 1948. It's pure class, but since it's no longer available, their current Original Vetiver is a nice alternative. (Yes, it DOES have vetiver in it.)

My second favorite vetiver is Floris Vetiver. Another very suave vetiver, but unfortunately, this one is no longer available either. However, their current Jermyn Street is an excellent, classy vetiver fragrance.

Finally picked up Roja's Vetiver EDP, which to me is in the same vein as TF Grey Vetiver. Definitely much more luxurious, and may be my favorite vetiver to date.

Private Label is great as well, just a different take on it.

That is one heck of a scent. Not a typical vetiver. Ver distinctive and smooth wearing, well groomed to the max kind of scent.

    2. Byredo Bal d'Afrique(although I tested it previously, I recently got a sample - this stuff is truly amazing!! second to the Roja in elegance and refinement, from what I tested so far - not that many unfortunately)
    3. I"m curious about most vetivers, though right now I'm curious about SL Vetiver Oriental and Sycomore

I'm not the biggest vetiver fan, but I do own and enjoy Original Vetiver ( I know, it's not the biggest example). Vetiver 46 is one that I sampled and liked.

    1. A tie between vintage (or at least older batches) Guerlain Vetiver, the surprisingly inexpensive while clean and good performance Vetiver Hombre by Adolfo Dominguez and the deceptively well masked vetiver notes in Ginepro Nero by l'Erbolario, beyond all the juniper, pepper and further spicy-dark dominants of this one

    2. Maybe Creed OV among the pricier ones, likely the newer Proraso and Zara vetiver takes among very affordable choices

    3. Almost any niche and/or designer exclusive vetiver, however also quite enthusiastic and open about any vetiver irrespective of brand, gender, category, age thus also vintage/reformulation divide etc.

The most interesting vetiver I’ve smelled recently (and my most recent vetiver purchase) is CdG Radish Vetiver - an extremely, dark, dank, earthy take on vetiver. Pretty similar to the vetiver in Encre Noire, but without any of the smooth, clean white musk and ISO e super. More like a heavy dose of geosmin in their place, along with a smidge of calone. It smells like the essence of roots. Reminds me a bit of brewed kava root which I drank a lot of when I lived in Hawai’i.

One that I’ve been curious about for a long time and may seek out soon is Route du Vetiver. Also been curious about Frank Olivier Sunrise Vetiver. It’s a super-cheapie but Sebastian from Smelling Good Fragrance Reviews on YouTube gave it a good review and I trust his judgment.

One thing I’m curious about is looking into vetiver fragrances with nutty notes. There’s something about vetiver, especially when I’ve smelled it on its own, that reminds me of peanut shells, a kind of nutty-grassy aspect. I think it’d be interesting to pair vetiver with something like hazelnut or peanut. Not sure for that matter that I’ve ever even seen a peanut note in a fragrance.

No vetiver life is worth living without Guerlain's, but I have to say that TFGV is quite close. So you might want to shoot elsewhere if you'd rather keep your collection decently sized without redundancies.
