Default you have $300..do you buy 1 niche or 5-10 designer fragrances?

So im torn right now. I just set aside a few hundred bucks and I was thinking about just going nuts and grabbing a bunch of designer fragrances just for exploration and fun but then it hit me that with the same amount of money I could buy myself a high end niche. What would you guys do, would you splurge for the multiple bottles and have some fun or just get 1 powerhouse frag?

I personally would buy the niche.

    One Niche.

Or $300 worth of niche decants if variety is desired.

Depends a lot on how big your collection is. If you have a modest amount or are early on exploring then buying more is the way to go, you will learn what you like the most (or least) with regular wearings and can try most genres/categories. Once you have a large collection and know what you like better, most people will slow down and buy fewer whether they are niche/expensive or not.

if i have a small collection or just starting out, i'd rather have 5 designers instead of 1 niche. $300 can get you a few very nice designers....

It would depend on the perfumes involved. I’d rather buy one I love than five that are ok.
I don’t understand. It is so vast that surpasses all understanding.Understanding is always limited. But not understanding can have no boundaries.I feel like I'm much more complete when I don't understand. Not understanding, like I say,is a gift. Not understanding, but not as a simple-minded.The good thing is to be intelligent and not understand. It's a strange blessing, like having craziness without being crazy. It is a meek disinterest,it is a stupid sweetness.

With $300, you can fit 2 bottles of many niche brands (including 50ml).Depending on what you want, you can find some 50ml niche starting at $100. (And a brand like De Nicolai does 30ml too for reasonable prices). So I'd go with that.

I have collected nearly all the designer fragrances which I want, so I'm turning my attention more to niche.

There is no right or wrong answer. I like all of the suggestions that have been made here so far. I agree that once your collection becomes quite large, you will probably want to move more toward niche and Indie. This is not to say that there are not many designer fragrances that are absolutely wonderful and worth owning. I have favourites that span across Avon and B&BW all the way through Malle, Lutens, Chanel, Guerlain, MFK, etc. Perhaps you can split the difference and buy a few bottles of designer fragrances and spend the rest of your money on one niche you really love or a number of niche samples? If you are trying to stretch your perfume dollar, try grey market sellers first. Also, there is a forum somewhere here on BN where you can swap, buy, and sell.

My own collection is quite large now, and as someone else mentioned, I also tend to buy 3-4 bottles a year anymore because there simply are not enough days in the year to wear everything. I am planning to sell some of my fragrances, too. I have run out of room, and if I want to add new ones to my collection each year, I will have no choice but to sell and gift some of my fragrances.

You have a lot to celebrate! Be happy that your are at the beginning of your journey. You have bags of time, and there is so much for you to find and to love!

Also, one other thought occurs. If you want to sample, you can offer to swap samples with some other members (as well as to order samples from sellers like Surrender to Chance, etc.). I have always found perfume lovers to be very generous souls in general. I am sure some folks here would send you a few samples just to help you out. Later on, you do the same for someone else, yes? Whatever you decide to do, enjoy yourself and have fun.

With $300, you could obtain five excellent fragrances or one excellent fragrance, it just depends on what you particularly have a hankering for. Either way, you're going to have to be discerning.

If you're going to spend $300 on a fragrance, I encourage you to make sure you've sampled it and that it's a true love.

Me personally, niche. Im not sure that would be what id recomend though. It depends on what you enjoy. I follow my fragrance whims. If you are gonna blow 300 on a niche tho id spring for a sample.

If it was 300 Euros, I could easily buy 5 really great high end designer fragrances (with discount codes) here in Europe.
So I would do that unless you have an eye on a special niche fragrance which is all you ever wanted.

This whole conversation is a fun back and forth until we find out what the OP has actually been testing. To zero in on one niche fragrance is either usually the result a some time-tested journey or a whack-a-mole chance of truly getting it right. On the latter case it’s usually the sum of who speaks the loudest at that moment in time about a certain fragrance. Without the information about whicha ones have been tested it’s just a free for all.

With that in mind, a small host of new designers on the shelf keeps you in the game, whereas one niche says you feel confident ya got game.

If I had to choose, though, I’d lean towards the niche decant side.

I would buy 15-20 x 5ml decants of niche perfumes
that would be the best solution I guess, unless you're looking for a signature scent

I like variety and recommend you go for some designers you enjoy. Even way back in high school I had Old Spice, Old Spice Lime and Old Spice Fresh. If you make a mistake with the designers and get one you don’t like as much as you thought you would, you’ll still have the others. If you have a significant other, let that person have a say as well so you know if they like them. (My wife gently hinted she didn’t like some of what I owned when we first met about three decades ago by buying me some she did like. Three decades later, she’ll just say, “That’s awful. Don’t wear it again,” and I know I’m out $YYY or have to wear it only when she’s out and about.)

If you already have a high end niche fragrance you’ve been obsessing over, it’s best to splurge on that. Otherwise have fun exploring...!

Right now that $300 can’t even get me a bottle of Santal Galore...

    I'm with cacio here.

    Not all niche is $300.

There's a lot of great stuff in the $120-$180 range.

There's a lot of great designer stuff too. There is no rule you must buy only one or the other.

Also reminder, you're a Basenoter. You're probably not going to blaze through anything fast. You can buy 50ml.
(Yes, the 100ml is cheaper per ml, but if you're on a budget of $300 total, get 50ml to be able to buy wider selection).

Pick up a couple of niche. Or get a niche and a couple of designer. Or just one pricey niche if that suits you.

It's your money, your frags. You get to make the rules.
Between Covid and retirement I don't get out much. But when I do, I smell real good.

if your "top 10" in your sig are fragrances you already have then volume of different scents is not a problem for you - get 1 or 2 new niche ones you like.

if your "top 10" in your sig are fragrances you want to get then spend the $300 getting as many of them as you can.

I cant see your wardrobe list so this is just guesswork.

sorry mates I was not clear in the op. I DO own all of the frags in my top 10 and I do in fact have a nice collection for the last few years at least maybe more. I would like to grow the collection just not sure if i want quality or quantity.

As for niche, the ones I desire at this point are ones that i own that are dwindling or gone: oud wood, plum japonais, bois du portugal, Erolfa. Some that i do not own and have sniffed: Baccarat Rouge, interlude man, epic man, light my fire..probably 2 dozen others I could list as well.

I do wear a few designer scents and wouldnt mind having bottles on hand of others. I have sniffed many of the bottles I would buy from samples I already own. Probably a few blind buys here and there on both ends of the spectrum. I do appreciate all of the feedback this place has always been wonderful to gain insight on the hobby.
