Default Hyped up fragrances by Youtubers you fell for?

Being a relative beginner to fragrances going by what I heard the fragrances below were meant to be the literal holy grail of olfactory perfection, but I wouldn't even pay £20 for full bottles after having purchased decants.

    1) Roja Enigma and Danger Parfum Cologne

    2) Nishane Ani

    3) YSL Y EDP

    4) JPG Ultra Male

I've realised I can't trust many youtubers, so many of them are shilling and getting free stuff.

Personally speaking, few to non so far.
Although must admit that especially when the gourmand trend/craze was quite on both significant social media (including but not limited to Youtube) and also offline in real everyday life, a few YT reviews and/or content creators did help better understand the reasons for liking certain sweeter male offering including bot not limited to: a few Amen flankers, same with One Million flankers, Eau des Baux. Rochas Man, a few options both within the sweeter tobacco output by John Varvatos but also by Bentley among others.

To be honest, can't say that I fell for the following, because I didn't by bottles but very small decants. And it helped develop my nose on what I like/disliked.

Trastevere - Pantheon Roma: Not hyped up fragrance in general, but was highly regarded by a famous fragrances Youtuber as a must try gourmand. It was one of the stickiest and nauseating thing I've ever smelled

Reflection Man - Amouage: That is in soooo many lists (spring list, floral list, date frag etc.. etc...), but god was i disappointed by that overly sweet/powdery/floral scent By far not the worst sample/decant I had, but relatively to its popularity it was extremely disappointing

The only fragrance I blind bought based on Youtube hype was Nautica Voyage. It turned out to be a great recommendation. Everything else I bought so far I pretty much have sampled first based on this forum's influence/discussion, or I came across them at the brick & mortar stores in person.

Spicebomb Night Vision Eau de Parfum. Everyone was hyping this on Youtube, but it is utterly dreck just like the EdT before it.

Only recent blind buy I’ve had after watching many online positive reviews is Bentley for Men Absolute. Worked out and I’m happy with it so far

When I was first getting back into the hobby I fell for Aqua Amara. Smells like orange scented air freshener. Its sitting in the back of my drawer and eventually when the value is sky high I'll swap it for something I actually like. That was the only one I "fell" for although there have been many that didn't live up to the way they hyped it.

The majority of the YouTubers talk about fragrances available at nearly every department store or Sephora so I'd often go there and sample what I heard them talk about and thankfully never had to waste another dime on their recommendations.

    Dylan Blue
    Ultra Male
    Spicebomb Extreme
    YSL Y
    YSL Y Live
    Invictus
    Invictus Aqua
    Eros

All fragrances I tried at stores that I do not like. Also CAHSEE and La Nuit de l'Homme are quite overrated and overhyped, but I do enjoy them

I suppose if I were to fall for a current hype train, I would succumb to Gravitas, but that's the only one.

None really I might watch a few reviews, but I always check here first usually and trust the noses here. If a FB blind buy doesn’t work out I just resell it, someone else’s treasure can be a dud for you so no regrets needed.

I just picked up Dylan Blue gonna see what the hype is haha, if I don’t enjoy it I will fall back on Bleu De Chanel but it appears to be a people pleaser (Dylan Blue) so I will see once I wear it.

I think there's a strong chance I'd like Gravitas given that I have a very similar taste as MrSmelly but I can't see myself getting a bottle given the price and the fact that I probably own 10+ fragrances in the same ballpark. I'm keeping my eyes open though for a small decant

IMO Dylan Blue fails to capture the quality of BDC. Feels inspired by BDC, but much screechier and more synthetic. Just my two (s)cents

I don't think I've fallen for youtube hype, for me youtube fragrance reviewers are more entertainment factor than anything.

Regarding Gaultier's Ultra Male, I was a die hard Gautier fan and so I've tried all and bought most of his fragrances. I like Ultra Male.
I also like Amouage Reflection man for it's similarities to Le Male, but haven't bought any others.

The hype I fell for, that wasn't youtube, was for Molecule 01. One review said " every man, woman and child in a 5-mile radius will wanna know your secret."

I couldn't smell a thing. I gave it to the young lad at the coffee shop I go to, he liked it; that was until his friend asked why he smelled like cat pee.

The other was Aventus. I didn't buy it, thank goodness, but I went to a store to try it and I could not fathom what all the fuss was about. I wouldn't wear it if it was free, or if it was the only fragrance available. I think I'd rub myself against a beaver's backside before I wore Aventus.

Well, I'm glad I got a sample of TF Noir Anthracite. It's nice but to me not panic-discontinued-blind-buy-a-full-bottle-worthy..

I don't really feel I got burned on anything tbh. I mean, Michael Jordan Legend is nice for what it is and I'm glad I got to experience
that style, but it's started to bore me. No regrets considering the price.

None really. I take some of their suggestions under consideration for testing, but not buying before trying.

Ani was on my radar according to reviews and the all-win I had until now with Nishane, but I've never smelt. What are your impressions on that one?
Note: not surprised about 3. and 4.

For me, yes I bought a few, but not blindly based on a single recommendation. I listen to a few youtubers, then when I spot a great review, I will try to read around reviews and forum posts on Fragrantica and Basenotes to confirm the feeling, as well as hear the opinions of other trusted noses.

If any "impulse" purchase following a review, I would say Bouddica Wode by Escentric Molecules, after a review by Galen on his channel (Aetherealist), link HERE. There is a low amount of feedback online on that one, and I decided to pull the trigger anyways. Wise decision!

Let's say that I might use a handful of trusted reviewers as well as forums to put fragrances on my radar, but youtube reviews alone are not enough to have me pull the trigger in general. That said, I've identified which youtube reviewers have reliable noses (not talking about honesty, just about olfactive description), and that helps a lot. I might also watch other ones, for confirmation (if they are not fan, then it might be a good sign for me). Example: Sebastian (of Semlling Great) is still unable to describe accurately what he smells, and the only times his reviews are useful, it's when he has guests on his vids, who often contradict him and provide an accurate description - not sure why he doesn't change job.

I love it, even if I agree with you that it's a fragrance I could live without. And despite that, it's possibly in my top 3 of TF, and that gives an idea on my thoughts on this house.

    Bentley For Men Intense
    Moschino Toy Boy
    Perry Ellis 360 Red
    Jacques Fath Pour L'Homme

Secret Amber Jovan (really not a fan)

And last but not least, a fragrance hyped up by Basenotes, and least favorite fragrance in my collection:
