I've never had any bad reactions to my sotd, luckily. I only ever wear 1 to 2 sprays, never anything more.

I observe this quite a bit at the office when individuals wear monstrous amounts of Sauvage and Bleu.

My first wearing of vintage Zino, I was put off. Second time around, it clicked, possibly because I wore less. I don't know from the current juice, but maybe just try wearing less of it. It's not as if it were a particularly shy fragrance.

    I've had this reaction to:

Van Cleef & Arpels pour Homme (1978)
    Creed Royal Water (1997)
    Joint by Roccobarocco (1992)
    Moustache by Rochas (1949)
Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent (1981)
    Parfums de Marly Lippizan (2010)
    Aramis by Estée Lauder (1965)

What did these all have in common?

Usually a sharp citrus or an animalic, heavy carnation and/or rose, galbanum or leather.

"Modern" noses only like sweet shower gel aquatic or white floral things. Anything aromatic or remotely dry is bad, as is anything obviously animalic.

Note: all anti-compliments were made when not in uniform (weekends). Nobody says a word to me on duty positive or negative about my fragrance.

Like Zino, these are all big projection perfumes. I wonder if the OP was over-spraying and basically crop dusting the train.

I think it’s a sign of the times. Rewind back to the 1980s for a moment and remember how many people smoked cigarettes. It was accepted and at the very least tolerated so no one would dream of complaining about cigarette smoke because it was everywhere. Likewise with fragrances - they were much bigger, stronger and more in your face and the world was a much more olfactively charged place to live.

Now though the smell of smoke from a single cigarette even in open spaces can send some people into a tailspin, flailing their arms around in front of their face and reacting as though it was mustard gas.

Don’t worry about it. Experiences like this are useful in life.

Apart from social norms, these could be related in at least two ways: 1) fragrances used to cover up or mitigate the smell of cigarettes, now unnecessary; 2) when you don't smoke (actively or passively), your sense of smell tends to be more acute.

The point was that people seemed to be able to deal with life back then and perhaps were more resilient compared to now. The guy could have got up and moved without making an issue of something so minor. I don’t imagine the same guy with his unencumbered and keen sense of smell stepping outside into the street and waving his fists at the bus pumping diesel fumes out the back as it drove past.

The guy probably would have said that if someone had used any cologne or a strong soap when washing. Some people are just like that.

I understood that point. I was offering a counterpoint. There is often more than one plausible explanation for an observed phenomenon.

To exclaim “You’re cologne is killing me” for 4 sprays of Zino does seem a little over the top. It’s not a stinker by any stretch of the imagination so the idea of the scent being the cause of his complaint seems unlikely. 4 squirts also doesn’t seem likely for overspray choking. Maybe he was travelling with a date and wearing Invictus Aqua so felt challenged by Foamy’s Zino’s machismo
