Not sure how Basenotes is an example. And I will politely disagree with you, as one of the reason why some people preferred Fragrantica over Basenotes is precisely its colorful interface, as opposed to Basenotes, that still looks like an early 2000's website.

The wardrobe also looks horrible now.
I agree that the SOTD thing is painful. That said, the wardrobe looks better imo, and I like the fact that I can organize the frags as I want, not only by name or house.

A bit like the look of Parfumo. But funnily enough, I've never heard complaints about the look of Parfumo.

Agreed, and I might regret a couple of features that are not anymore on Fragrantica. But in regard to BN, there's also another saying: fix something that is broken.

The primary issue is not prettiness, it's function. From a usability standpoint, the layout of the BN website is much better than Fragrantica's in almost every way. That's not to say the BN site is perfect by any means. It's just less imperfect.

Sure, BN could stand a facelift, although I would place a low priority on that compared to, say, entering the entire backlog of missing fragrances into the database. (This, finally, has begun!) Fragrantica's use of color before the current update, though, was of the Rainbow Brite variety: it was hard to imagine it as having been designed for, or by, adults. If the designers of the new site can resolve the layout issues, it will then lap BN in terms of looking current. Function may take a bit more doing, but I hold out hope. I genuinely want Fragrantica to succeed, and I do applaud the effort. Just not yet the results.

Well, if that was true, Apple would have never succeeded. I agree with you, but many choose prettiness over function, trust me. And anyways, there were many features that were (and still are) absent on Basenotes.

I agree in full with your second statement.

Really???!!!! Wow I missed the bulletin on that one. Good news of the month for me! Do tell more....

Back to Fragrantica - I went there yesterday and felt quite seasick - wasn't sure if I wanted to ever go back. But I guess I will, because I enter my perfume timeline on there. But apart from that, they pretty much maxed out what was already an overbusy site design.

Apple succeeded by excelling at both form and function, and especially the interrelation of the two.

Yeah I feel the best way to go was keep the reviews in order of date. Instead of having to sift through either overly hyped reviews or negative reviews that were ballooned but had no substance. I guess one of the few upsides would be that the new design doesn't encourage people reposting their reviews because they crave balloons. I personally never understood that, why would someone care so much about balloon validation? Worst case scenario people don't subjectively agree with their review.

Well one thing is that if you get/got enough downvotes, your review disappears. So if someone has what they feel is a legitimate negative review on the fragrance, but there's a bandwagon of people who disagree - they can essentially silence the initial reviewer. Which kinda sucks.

Negative or critical reviews/aspects are helpful as hell!

Yeah I agree that review wiping is a thing. But I have noticed one or two cases where people had maybe one or two balloons, but then decided to repost verbatim. One case in particular is kind of funny because the review below theirs refers to the original review before the person decided to repost it. Either they just wanted more "exposure" or they were paranoid that their review was wiped because it didn't have a handful of balloons. Ahh vanity.

I don't like the new layout. Everything is so condensed yet somehow far apart, and the scrolling! The scrolling is probably the worst part!

BTW if you are viewing the 'new version' on mac or pc you can zoom your browser to about 75% and get a more classic fragrantica experience, expecially when reading reviews.

An excellent reason for Basenotes to never have a Like/Dislike button for posts and threads, which has sometimes been proposed in the past.

    Those names are downright embarrassing:

There are 4 fragrances for men (Sensual Hero, Supreme Desire, Torrid Tempo and Wild Attraction) and 4 for women (Divine Passion, Seduction Vibes, Sexy Muse and Suave Skin).
