Put on a few sprays of Amouage Gold Woman with my pajamas.

I’ve tested a few others but Gold is the only Amouage that I have (as a factory sample only). I looked for it because of its resemblance to Madame Rochas, one of my favorite vintage perfumes that was also created by Guy Robert, about 25 years earlier. And in this sense Gold doesn’t disappoint this vintage geek: it is very much in the spirit of vintage Madame Rochas, No. 5, Joy, and so forth.

But I can’t help feeling Gold isn’t quite as good as any of those great vintage floral aldehydes. Perhaps my more recent sample isn’t as well formulated as the 1983 release, but again, if I am going to go hunting for vintage, I’ll go for the originals.

The House of Amouage remains a confusing brand to me - it seems to be a mixed bag of attars, designer niche scents, and “luxe.” A recent interview with its new Chief Experience Officer (CXO) suggests to me that marketing may be triumphing over substance.

I'm in on this sync-- I have Love Tuberose plus a sample set. I've tried a couple of new samples in the last week from random selections, so this time I'll go with my known fragrance and choose Love Tuberose.

Vintage Gold in the ďcristalĒ bottles is a serious beastóit was a cost-is-no-object concoction, and it smells like it. The reformulations were somewhat stripped down out of necessity. When Dr. T. wears her Gold, it smells as unapologetically lush and complex as anything Iíve ever had my nose on.

Fate Woman from a sample. It really is a lot like Opium.

It's too bad that I'm still partially anosmic to Lyric Woman. I do feel it's a heady scent, but I don't smell much - it's an interesting sensation. When I put my nose to my wrist, I can tell it that it's very musky-dusty and a bit rosy and slightly spicy scent. It reminds me of Agent Provocateur somewhat, just much quieter - and I know other people describe it as a beast! I'll try sniffing it again after a few months, maybe it's just my nose acting up from all that sitting indoors.
I have this sensation with Lyric as well. I know that I overspray it because it's pretty difficult for me to discern, but it can quickly fill a small, warm room. I pulled it out earlier this week when I was thinking of today's sync and wore it to the beach, right on my chest, as I went for a jog. It was probably the best experience of it that I've had, and I've gone through 50ml of it. I was able to smell it pretty well, but I think I'm still missing out on a lot of it.

Today, I went with Fate Woman.

Looks like a lot of people don't have Amouage. I stayed away from the house for a long, long, long time because it's so expensive. Happily, there is FragranceNet.

I have to say I enjoyed the women's version a little bit more than the men's. The men's version I thought was unisex. It was a bit strange for my nose - the florals with the animalic base made it very uncomfortable. A very unique and dated scent compared to their other offerings.

I wouldn't go so far as to call Gold Man "uncomfortable," but I agree that Gold Woman is superior.

Of course, the countryside may smell quite different depending on which country you're in! The countryside l grew up in smelled of forest floor, heathland, haystacks & horse manure, whereas the Greek countryside l grew to love smells of herbs like sage & thyme, almond blossom, night-scented jasmine, lemons & salty sea breezes.

l have a couple of ideas for this week, but l'll probably decide on the day...

I might do Jo Malone Silk Blossom because the “Mimosa” tree we have in the American South (actually a Persian Silk Tree) grows everywhere wild here— the sides of roads, little pop-up forests, the edges of neighborhoods and parks.
