Givaudan - Musk #44 (purchased from Ori Fishler)

At least, it has “musk” handwritten on the top and bottom of the box, and a sticker on the bottom of the bottle that says “#44.” Anyway, a synthetic musk, but I couldn’t tell you which one. Worth wearing once for the experience. Otherwise, only good for mixing/layering.

You've ascended from obscure vintages no one else will ever find to actual vintage raw materials.

Coming soon: Raw 19th century Mousse de Saxe and Prunol from De Naire. ;-)

This was just a lark because I didn't know what the bottles were, they were inexpensive, and I had other stuff I was getting from Ori anyway so cost of shipping was a non-issue. I have two or three others I'll try in the coming weeks. I am interested in kits I can use to train my nose to recognize notes, but I have no plans to amass a library of aromachems. (Mousse de Saxe, though, I would buy!)

Those kits can be costly too. I've done the best I can sampling the Escentric Molecules range, and specific other niche brands (e.g. Juliette Has a Gun) who showcase synthetic raw materials, plus some friends who've sent naturals in tincture or oil form for me (eg oakmoss), and unprocessed stuff like sandalwood chips and civet paste. I haven't gone Luca Turin mode and ordered kits of every musk or woody-amber to stalk the Earth though.

I'm mostly after the naturals and a few of the most common synthetics, given that I'm immersed in vintages and eyeing artisanals over the horizon. I just don't want to be praising oakmoss until someone whacks me on the head and says, "that's tuberose, idiot."

A bit of an aside, but I generally don't want to praise oakmoss unless it's relevant to the composition (e.g. a featured accord like in a chypre), which is why in so many cases with older fragrances where it is only a bit player or fixative at most (e.g. a complex oriental), I'm not dancing with snakes and speaking in tongues in my review over oakmoss being present nor making hyperbolic claims that the oakmoss is the primary reason X vintage scent is good (as we tiredly see time and time again on these boards).

That said, it's good to know when oakmoss alone the cause of your rich skin feel (e.g. vintage Chanel pM), versus something like the aforementioned Mousse de Saxe, which has a lot more than oakmoss going on in its internal workings. Mousse de Saxe tends to be the beating heart of many Daltroff-era Carons, like the gorgeous Narcisse Noir, Nuit de Nel, or Tabac Blonde I've been blessed with being able to sample in deep vintage form.

We now return you to your regular "they don't make them like this anymore" vintage SOTD programming.

As I've more or less said before, if you're praising the butter in a cooked meal, there's either too much of it or the rest of the dish isn't that good. I like oakmoss because it isn't margarine, not (with rare exception) because it's the main event.

Why would Givaudan put out a single musk product like that in a fancy bottle and box with a tiered pedestal presentation?

I mean, they were making industrial components for the trade, not for the public, right? It seems like their stuff would come in laboratory-style flasks and such.

My guess is that all the fancy bottles I got were giveaways for "suits" at a trade event, and none were ever sold like that. NOTE: Fragrantica has "Givaudan Parfum" in its directory with a nearly identical bottle and box, and an "Eau de Toilette" as well. I don't know that these were ever marketed, either.

But Barbara Streisand is like butter!! I'm getting a little verklempt. Got some shpilkus in my ganektagazoink. Talk amongst yourselves. Let me give you a topic: Why is it that when asked a penny for your thoughts, you put your two cents in, and who gets the change? Discuss...

In essence (so to speak), yep, although nobody would mistake ol’ #44 for laundry musk.

Looks like it was once called Givaudan Musk Tibetine. It's a banned nitromusk and is supposed to have a fatty to powdery musky profile.
